Sefaria Community Translation

You are Adonoy, our God,

Sefaria Community Translation

before Whom our fathers burned

Sefaria Community Translation

the incense of spices

Sefaria Community Translation

when the Holy Temple was standing,

Sefaria Community Translation

as You commanded them

Sefaria Community Translation

by the hand of Moses Your prophet,

Sefaria Community Translation

as it is written in Your Torah:

Sefaria Community Translation

And Adonoy said to Moses,

Sefaria Community Translation

“Take for yourself spices—

Sefaria Community Translation

stacte, onycha, and galbanum—

Sefaria Community Translation

spices, and pure frankincense,

Sefaria Community Translation

[they] shall be in equal weights.

Sefaria Community Translation

You will make it into incense,

Sefaria Community Translation

a compound mixed by a compounder,

Sefaria Community Translation

salted, undefiled, and holy.

Sefaria Community Translation

You will pulverize some of it very fine,

Sefaria Community Translation

and place it before the [Ark of] Testimony

Sefaria Community Translation

in the Tent of Meeting,

Sefaria Community Translation

where I will meet with you;

Sefaria Community Translation

it will be to you holy of holies.”

Sefaria Community Translation

And Aaron shall burn upon it [the Altar]

Sefaria Community Translation

incense of spices every morning;

Sefaria Community Translation

when he cleans the lamps

Sefaria Community Translation

he will burn it.

Sefaria Community Translation

And when Aaron lights the lamps

Sefaria Community Translation

in the afternoon,

Sefaria Community Translation

he will burn it;

Sefaria Community Translation

a constant incense-offering before Adonoy

Sefaria Community Translation

throughout your generations.

Sefaria Community Translation

The Rabbis taught:

Sefaria Community Translation

How was the incense compounded?

Sefaria Community Translation

Three hundred and sixty-eight

Sefaria Community Translation

manim were comprised therein,

Sefaria Community Translation

three hundred and sixty-five

Sefaria Community Translation

the number of days in the solar year,

Sefaria Community Translation

one maneh for each day—

Sefaria Community Translation

half in the morning

Sefaria Community Translation

and half in the afternoon.

Sefaria Community Translation

From the three remaining manim

Sefaria Community Translation

the Kohein Gadol brought

Sefaria Community Translation

two handfuls [into the Holy of Holies]

Sefaria Community Translation

on Yom Kippur;

Sefaria Community Translation

[for which purpose] they were put back

Sefaria Community Translation

into the mortar

Sefaria Community Translation

on the eve of Yom Kippur,

Sefaria Community Translation

and ground [again] very thoroughly,

Sefaria Community Translation

in order to make them very fine.

Sefaria Community Translation

Eleven kinds of spices were used for it.

Sefaria Community Translation
  1. balm, 2) onycha,

Sefaria Community Translation
  1. galbanum, 4) frankincense—

Sefaria Community Translation

by weight, seventy maneh of each;

Sefaria Community Translation
  1. myrrh, 6) cassia,

Sefaria Community Translation
  1. spikenard and 8) saffron—

Sefaria Community Translation

sixteen maneh of each;

Sefaria Community Translation
  1. twelve maneh of costus,

Sefaria Community Translation
  1. three of aromatic bark,

Sefaria Community Translation

and 11) nine of cinnamon.

Sefaria Community Translation

[Also used in the incense compound were:] Nine kabin of Carshina lye,

Sefaria Community Translation

Cyprus wine [measuring]

Sefaria Community Translation

three s'in and three kabin

Sefaria Community Translation

if he had no Cyprus wine,

Sefaria Community Translation

he could use strong white wine—

Sefaria Community Translation

a fourth of a kab of Sodom salt,

Sefaria Community Translation

and a minute quantity of maaleh ashan.

Sefaria Community Translation

Rabbi Nosson of Babylonia says,

Sefaria Community Translation

“Jordan amber was added

Sefaria Community Translation

of a minute quantity,

Sefaria Community Translation

and if one added honey,

Sefaria Community Translation

it (the incense) became unfit;

Sefaria Community Translation

and if one omitted any of its spices

Sefaria Community Translation

he was liable to the death penalty.”

Sefaria Community Translation

Rabbi Shimon ben Gamliel

Sefaria Community Translation

“The balm is nothing but sap

Sefaria Community Translation

which drips from the balsam tree.

Sefaria Community Translation

the lye of Carshina was used

Sefaria Community Translation

for rubbing the onycha

Sefaria Community Translation

in order to refine its appearance.

Sefaria Community Translation

The Cyprus wine was used

Sefaria Community Translation

to soak the onycha

Sefaria Community Translation

to give it a pungent odor.

Sefaria Community Translation

Though the water of Raglayim

Sefaria Community Translation

was well suited for that purpose,

Sefaria Community Translation

they did not bring

Sefaria Community Translation

the water of Raglayim into the Temple

Sefaria Community Translation

because it would be disrespectful.

Sefaria Community Translation

It was taught in a Boraysa:

Sefaria Community Translation

Rabbi Nosson says,

Sefaria Community Translation

“While [the Kohein] ground [the incense]

Sefaria Community Translation

‘Hodeik heiteiv, heiteiv hodeik,'

Sefaria Community Translation

because the sound is good for the spices.

Sefaria Community Translation

If half the quantity of incense was prepared

Sefaria Community Translation

but if only a third

Sefaria Community Translation

or a fourth [of it was prepared]

Sefaria Community Translation

we have not heard [whether it was acceptable.”]

Sefaria Community Translation

Rabbi Yehuda said,

Sefaria Community Translation

“This is the general rule:

אִם

Sefaria Community Translation

If [it was prepared with all its ingredients]

Sefaria Community Translation

in the correct proportion,

Sefaria Community Translation

even if only half was prepared;

Sefaria Community Translation

but if he left out any of its spices,

Sefaria Community Translation

he was liable for the death penalty.

Sefaria Community Translation

It was taught in a Boraysa:

Sefaria Community Translation

Bar Kappara says,

Sefaria Community Translation

“Once in sixty or seventy years

Sefaria Community Translation

the accumulated surplus was sufficient

Sefaria Community Translation

to provide half [the yearly quantity of incense.”]

Sefaria Community Translation

Bar Kappara also taught,

Sefaria Community Translation

“If he would have put into it

Sefaria Community Translation

a minute quantity of honey,

Sefaria Community Translation

no one could have withstood [resisted]the scent.

Sefaria Community Translation

Why was no honey mixed with it?

Sefaria Community Translation

Because the Torah says, (Leviticus 2:11)

Sefaria Community Translation

For any leaven or honey,

Sefaria Community Translation

do not burn from them,

Sefaria Community Translation

[as] a fire-offering to Adonoy.”

Sefaria Community Translation

Adonoy of Hosts is with us,

Sefaria Community Translation

a stronghold for us is the God of Jacob,

Sefaria Community Translation

Adonoy of Hosts,

Sefaria Community Translation

fortunate is the man who trusts in You.

Sefaria Community Translation

Adonoy, deliver [us]!

Sefaria Community Translation

The King will answer us on the day we call.

Sefaria Community Translation

You are my shelter;

Sefaria Community Translation

from distress You preserve me;

Sefaria Community Translation

with glad song of rescue, You envelop me,

Sefaria Community Translation

Let Adonoy be pleased

Sefaria Community Translation

with the offerings of Judah and Jerusalem,

Sefaria Community Translation

as in the days of old and in earlier years.

Sefaria Community Translation

Please, by the force of Your great right hand,

Sefaria Community Translation

release the bound one.

Sefaria Community Translation

those who seek Your Unity,

Sefaria Community Translation

preserve them like the pupil [of Your eye].

Sefaria Community Translation

Bless them, purify them;

Sefaria Community Translation

Your benevolent righteousness

Sefaria Community Translation

[may You] always bestow upon them.

Sefaria Community Translation

Mighty, Holy One,

Sefaria Community Translation

in Your abundant goodness,

Sefaria Community Translation

lead Your community.

Sefaria Community Translation

Unique One, Exalted, turn to Your people

Sefaria Community Translation

who are mindful of Your holiness.

Sefaria Community Translation

Sefaria Community Translation

Whose glorious kingdom

Sefaria Community Translation

is forever and ever.
