Sefaria Community Translation

Our God and God of our fathers,

Sefaria Community Translation

remember us favorably before You

Sefaria Community Translation

and be mindful of us for

Sefaria Community Translation

deliverance and compassion

Sefaria Community Translation

from the eternal high heavens.

Sefaria Community Translation

Remember in our behalf, Adonoy, our God:

Sefaria Community Translation

the love of our ancestors,

Sefaria Community Translation

Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, Your servants;

Sefaria Community Translation

the covenant, the kindness,

Sefaria Community Translation

and the oath which You swore

Sefaria Community Translation

to our father Abraham on Mount Moriah,

Sefaria Community Translation

and the binding

Sefaria Community Translation

of Isaac, his son

Sefaria Community Translation

on the altar,

Sefaria Community Translation

as it is written in Your Torah.³⁷

footnotes: ³⁷ Genesis 22:1-19:

Sefaria Community Translation

After these events,³⁸

footnotes: ³⁸ These events refer to the previous nine tests by which God tested Abraham. This was to be the tenth and the most difficult test of all.—Ha’amek Dovor

Sefaria Community Translation

God tested Abraham

Sefaria Community Translation

and said to him, “Abraham!”

Sefaria Community Translation

and he [Abraham] said, “Here I am.”

Sefaria Community Translation

He said, “Please, take your son,

Sefaria Community Translation

your only one,³⁹

footnotes: ³⁹ Isaac was Abraham’s only son by Sarah.

Sefaria Community Translation

whom you love—Isaac—

Sefaria Community Translation

and go to the land of Moriah,

Sefaria Community Translation

and bring him up as a burnt-offering

Sefaria Community Translation

on one of the mountains

Sefaria Community Translation

which I will designate to you.

Sefaria Community Translation

Abraham awoke early in the morning,

Sefaria Community Translation

saddled his donkey,

Sefaria Community Translation

and took his two attendants⁴⁰ with him,

footnotes: ⁴⁰ Ishmael and Eliezer. Rashi

Sefaria Community Translation

and also his son Isaac.

Sefaria Community Translation

He split the wood of the burnt-offering,

Sefaria Community Translation

and rose up, and went to the place

Sefaria Community Translation

that God had designated to him.

Sefaria Community Translation

On the third day,

Sefaria Community Translation

Abraham lifted his eyes

Sefaria Community Translation

and saw the place from afar.

Sefaria Community Translation

Abraham said to his attendants,

Sefaria Community Translation

“You stay here with the donkey,

Sefaria Community Translation

and I and the boy will go to that place.

Sefaria Community Translation

We will prostrate ourselves [in worship]

Sefaria Community Translation

and return⁴¹ to you.”

footnotes: ⁴¹ Abraham prophesied that both of them would return.—Rashi

Sefaria Community Translation

And Abraham took

Sefaria Community Translation

the wood of the burnt-offering

Sefaria Community Translation

and placed it on his son Isaac.

Sefaria Community Translation

In his hand he took

Sefaria Community Translation

the fire and the knife,⁴²

footnotes: ⁴² The Hebrew word is “maacheles” (root: אכל = to eat) which means that it renders meat fit for eating through slaughtering the animal. Another interpretation is: his knife is called maacheles because we still enjoy (eat) the reward of Abraham’s virtue when he agreed to use it to slaughter his son.— Rashi

Sefaria Community Translation

and they both went together.

Sefaria Community Translation

Isaac spoke to Abraham his father

Sefaria Community Translation

and said, “Father,”

Sefaria Community Translation

and he said, “Here I am my son.”

Sefaria Community Translation

He said, “Here are the fire and the wood,

Sefaria Community Translation

but where is the lamb for the burnt-offering?”

Sefaria Community Translation

Abraham said,

Sefaria Community Translation

“God Himself will show the lamb

Sefaria Community Translation

for a burnt offering, my son.”

Sefaria Community Translation

And the two of them went together.⁴³

footnotes: ⁴³ Although Isaac understood that he was going to be slaughtered, “They went together”—with like hearts.—Rashi

Sefaria Community Translation

They came to the place

Sefaria Community Translation

that God had designated to him,

Sefaria Community Translation

and Abraham built the⁴⁴ altar there,

footnotes: ⁴⁴ The Torah says that he built “the” altar not just “an” altar, to indicate that Abraham rebuilt the same altar which was originally built by Adam and used by Cain, Abel and by Noah.—Targum Yonoson ben Uziel

Sefaria Community Translation

and arranged the wood,

Sefaria Community Translation

and bound his son Isaac,

Sefaria Community Translation

and placed him on the altar,

Sefaria Community Translation

on top of the wood.

Sefaria Community Translation

Abraham reached out his hand

Sefaria Community Translation

and took the knife

Sefaria Community Translation

to slaughter his son.

Sefaria Community Translation

An angel of Adonoy called to him

Sefaria Community Translation

from heaven

Sefaria Community Translation

and said, “Abraham! Abraham!”

Sefaria Community Translation

and he said, “Here I am.”

Sefaria Community Translation

He [God] said,

Sefaria Community Translation

“Do not harm the boy,

Sefaria Community Translation

nor do anything to him;

Sefaria Community Translation

for now I know

Sefaria Community Translation

that you are one who fears God

Sefaria Community Translation

and have not withheld your son,

Sefaria Community Translation

your only one, from Me.”

Sefaria Community Translation

Abraham raised his eyes

Sefaria Community Translation

and beheld a ram⁴⁵

footnotes: ⁴⁵ Tradition tells us that this ram was prepared for this purpose from the time of creation. Rashi (from Maseches Avos 5:6)

Sefaria Community Translation

after it had been caught in the thicket

Sefaria Community Translation

by its horns;

Sefaria Community Translation

and Abraham went and took the ram,

Sefaria Community Translation

and brought it up as a burnt-offering

Sefaria Community Translation

instead of his son.

Sefaria Community Translation

Abraham called

Sefaria Community Translation

the name of that place,

Sefaria Community Translation

“Adonoy will see”;⁴⁶

footnotes: ⁴⁶ The Midrash interprets the following: “God will see the binding of Isaac and through its merit He will pardon Israel every year and rescue them from trouble. It will thus be said, “On this day,” by all generations that the ashes of Isaac are seen by God and serve as our atonement.—Rashi

Sefaria Community Translation

as it is said [to] this day

Sefaria Community Translation

“On Adonoy's mountain, He will be seen.”

Sefaria Community Translation

An angel of Adonoy called to Abraham

Sefaria Community Translation

a second time from heaven, and said,

Sefaria Community Translation

“‘I have sworn by Myself,' declares Adonoy,

Sefaria Community Translation

‘that because you performed

Sefaria Community Translation

this deed,

Sefaria Community Translation

and did not withhold

Sefaria Community Translation

your only son,

Sefaria Community Translation

I will greatly bless you

Sefaria Community Translation

and make your descendants as numerous⁴⁷

footnotes: ⁴⁷ If these blessings were intended to increase the population of Abraham’s descendants, it was superfluous, since God had previously blessed him for that purpose. God here blessed the descendants of Abraham with the nobility of spirit and courage to fulfill the command to sanctify God even when self-sacrifice is required. Only the nation of Israel, Abraham’s children, were commanded to fulfill this mitzvoh, because of the legacy we inherited from him.—Ha’amek Dovor.

Sefaria Community Translation

as the stars of the sky

Sefaria Community Translation

and like the sand on the seashore,

Sefaria Community Translation

and your descendants will inherit

Sefaria Community Translation

the gate of their enemies.

Sefaria Community Translation

Through your children, will be blessed

Sefaria Community Translation

all the nations of the world,

Sefaria Community Translation

because you heeded My voice.'”

Sefaria Community Translation

Abraham returned to his attendants,

Sefaria Community Translation

and they rose and went together

Sefaria Community Translation

to Beer Sheva,

Sefaria Community Translation

and Abraham dwelt in Beer Sheva.
