קֹדֶם הִסְתַּלְּקוּתוֹ, אָמַר: שֶׁכְּבָר הוּא עוֹמֵד עַכְשָׁו עַל מַדְרֵגָה כָּזוֹ שֶׁאִי אֶפְשָׁר לְהַשִּׂיג יוֹתֵר בְּשׁוּם אֹפֶן, כָּל זְמַן שֶׁמְּלֻבָּשִׁין בְּהַגּוּף.
Before he passed away, the Rebbe said, “I have already reached such a level that I can no longer advance while still clothed in this earthly body.
וְאָמַר: שֶׁמִּתְגַּעְגֵּעַ מְאֹד מְאֹד לְהַפְשִׁיט גּוּפוֹ, כִּי אִי אֶפְשָׁר לוֹ לַעֲמֹד עַל מַדְרֵגָה אַחַת בְּשׁוּם אֹפֶן.
“I yearn to put this body aside, for I cannot remain on one level.”
כִּי כָּל יְמֵי חַיָּיו מֵעוֹלָם לֹא עָמַד עַל מַדְרֵגָה אַחַת, אֲפִלּוּ כְּשֶׁהִגִּיעַ לְאֵיזֶה מַדְרֵגָה עֶלְיוֹנָה שֶׁיִּהְיֶה, אֲפִלּוּ לְתַכְלִית הַמַּעֲלָה, אַף עַל פִּי כֵן הָיָה מְחַפֵּשׂ יוֹתֵר, עַד שֶׁהִגִּיעַ לְמַדְרֵגָה גְּבוֹהָה יוֹתֵר וְיוֹתֵר. וְכֵן הָיָה תָּמִיד כָּל יְמֵי חַיָּיו (כַּמְבֹאָר בְּמָקוֹם אַחֵר). וּלְבַסּוֹף הִגִּיעַ לְמַדְרֵגָה גְּבוֹהָה כָּזוֹ שֶׁאִי אֶפְשָׁר בְּתוֹךְ הַגּוּף לְהַשִּׂיג יוֹתֵר בְּשׁוּם אֹפֶן. וְעַל כֵּן הָיָה מֻכְרָח לְהִסְתַּלֵּק.
Although the Rebbe attained the highest levels, he still strove to reach the next step. This was true throughout his life (see "His Pilgrimage to the Holy Land" #33). He finally reached so high a level that he could no longer advance while still in a mortal body. Therefore, he had to leave this world.
וְאָמַר בְּזוֹ הַלָּשׁוֹן: אִיךְ וָואלְט שׁוֹין גִּיגֶערִין דָּאס הֶעמְדִיל אוֹיס גִּיטָאן. וָוארִין אִיךְ קָאן אוֹיף אֵיין מַדְרֵגָה נִיט שְׁטֵיין (כְּבָר רָצִיתִי לִפְשׁוֹט כֻּתָנְתִּי מִפְּנֵי שֶׁאֵינִי יָכוֹל לַעֲמֹד עַל מַדְרֵיגָה אַחַת).
He said, “Ich valt shoin gegeben das hemdel ois ge-tan. Varein ich kan oif ein madregah nit shtein – I would like very much to remove this garment. For I cannot remain on one level.”
