שָׁמַעְתִּי בִּשְׁמוֹ שֶׁאָמַר לְעִנְיַן מַה שֶּׁהַצַּדִּיקִים הֵם נָעִים וְנָדִים בַּדֶּרֶךְ, אָמַר: שֶׁיֵּשׁ נְשָׁמוֹת נִדָּחוֹת שֶׁאֵינָם יְכוֹלִים לְהִתְעַלּוֹת כִּי אִם עַל יְדֵי מַה שֶּׁהַצַּדִּיק נָע וָנָד.
The Rebbe spoke about tzaddikim who always wander and move about. He said, “There are outcast souls that cannot be elevated except through the wandering of a tzaddik.³⁶⁴” #195; Tzaddik #48. Cf. ibid., #87, #94; Yemey Moharnat #49.

וְיֵשׁ צַדִּיק שֶׁאֵינוֹ רוֹצֶה לִהְיוֹת נָע וָנָד. אֲבָל אַף עַל פִּי כֵן הוּא נָע וָנָד בְּבֵיתוֹ. הַיְנוּ, מַה שֶּׁהוּא הוֹלֵךְ הֵנָּה וָהֵנָּה בְּבֵיתוֹ זֶהוּ גַּם כֵּן בְּחִינַת נָע וָנָד.
“Even if the tzaddik does not want to travel, he roams and wanders in his house. He paces back and forth, and this is also in the category of wandering and roaming” (Genesis 4:12).
