עַצְבוּת הוּא: כְּמוֹ מִי שֶׁהוּא בְּכַעַס וּבְרֹגֶז, כְּמוֹ שֶׁמִּתְרַעֵם וּמִתְלוֹנֵן עָלָיו יִתְבָּרַךְ ח"ו, עַל שֶׁאֵינוֹ עוֹשֶׂה לוֹ רְצוֹנוֹ.

Depression is like anger and rage. It is like a complaint against God for not fulfilling one’s wishes.

אֲבָל לֵב נִשְׁבָּר הוּא: כְּבֵן הַמִּתְחַטֵּא לִפְנֵי אָבִיו, כְּתִינוֹק שֶׁקּוֹבֵל וּבוֹכֶה לִפְנֵי אָבִיו עַל שֶׁנִּתְרַחֵק מִמֶּנּוּ וְכוּ' (וְעַיֵּן בְּמָקוֹם אַחֵר מִזֶּה).

But one with a broken heart is like a child pleading before his father (Ta'anit 19a). He is like a baby crying and distressed because his father is far away (see “His Wisdom” #20, 231).
