177. “Who in the world, etc.” Who in the world is greater for us than Abraham, who performed kindness with all people? On the day when he made a feast, what is written? “And the child grew and was weaned. And Abraham made a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned” [Genesis 21:8]. Abraham made a feast and called all the greatest in the generation to that feast. And we learned [that] in any feast of joy, that accuser goes and observes: If that person first performed kindness with the poor, and if there are poor in the house, the accuser departs from that house and does not enter there. But if not, the accuser enters there and he sees the mixture of joy without the poor and without first performing kindness with the poor, [and] he ascends upwards and slanders him.
