And God spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai in the Tent of Meeting on the first day of the second month of the second year after their departure from the land of Egypt, saying:

Take a census of the whole congregation of the children of Israel, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, every male individually.

From twenty years old and above, all who are able to go to war in Israel, you and Aaron shall number them by their armies.

And there shall be with you a man from each tribe, each one the head of his father's house.

And these are the names of the men who shall stand with you: from Reuben, Elizur the son of Shedeur.

And from Simeon, Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai....

And from Judah, Nahshon the son of Amminadab.

And from Issachar, Nethanel the son of Zuar.

And from Zebulun, Eliab the son of Helon.

And from the sons of Joseph: from Ephraim, Elishama the son of Ammihud; and from Manasseh, Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur.

And from Benjamin, Abidan the son of Gideoni

And from Dan, Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai

And from Asher, Pagiel the son of Ochran

And from Gad, Eliasaph the son of Deuel.

And from Naphtali, Ahira the son of Enan.

These are the ones called from the assembly, leaders of the tribes of their fathers; they are the heads of the thousands of Israel.

So Moses and Aaron took these men whose names had been specified.

And they assembled all the congregation on the first day of the second month, and they were registered by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and above, by their individual count.

As God commanded Moses, he numbered them in the wilderness of Sinai.

The children of Reuben, Israel's firstborn, their genealogies were registered by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, every male individually, from twenty years old and above, all who were able to go to war in their armies.

And those who were numbered from them were forty-six thousand and five hundred.

And those who were numbered from the children of Simeon, their genealogies were registered by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, every male individually, from twenty years old and above, all who were able to go out to war.

And those who were numbered of the tribe of Simeon were fifty-nine thousand and three hundred

And likewise the numbered ones from the sons of Judah, their posterity, by their families, by their fathers' houses, by the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go forth for military service.

And the numbered ones of the tribe of Gad were forty-five thousand six hundred and fifty.

And likewise the numbered ones from the sons of Judah, their posterity, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go forth for military service.

And the numbered ones of the tribe of Judah were seventy-four thousand six hundred.

And those who were numbered from the children of Issachar, their genealogies were registered by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and above, all who were able to go out to war.

And those who were numbered from the tribe of Issachar were fifty-four thousand and four hundred.

And those who were numbered from the children of Zebulun, their genealogies were registered by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and above, all who were able to go out to war.

And those who were numbered from the tribe of Zebulun were fifty-seven thousand and four hundred.

And those who were numbered from the children of Joseph: from Ephraim, their genealogies were registered by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and above, all who were able to go out to war.

And those who were numbered from the tribe of Ephraim were forty thousand and five hundred.

And those who were numbered from the children of Manasseh, their genealogies were registered by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and above, all who were able to go out to war.

And those who were numbered from the tribe of Manasseh were thirty-two thousand and two hundred.

And those who were numbered from the children of Benjamin, their genealogies were registered by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and above, all who were able to go out to war.

And those who were numbered from the tribe of Benjamin were thirty-five thousand and four hundred.

And those who were numbered from the children of Dan, their genealogies were registered by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and above, all who were able to go out to war.

And those who were numbered from the tribe of Dan were sixty-two thousand and seven hundred.

And those who were numbered from the sons of Asher, according to their generations, by their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, all that went forth to the army.

And those who were numbered of the tribe of Asher were forty-one thousand and five hundred.

And those who were numbered from the children of Naphtali, their genealogies were registered by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and above, all who were able to go out to war.

And those who were numbered of the tribe of Naphtali were fifty-three thousand and four hundred.

These are the ones counted by Moses and Aaron, and the leaders of Israel, twelve men, each one representing his father's house.

And among them were those listed by their families, from twenty years old and above, all who were able to go out to war.

So that was the total of their count: six hundred and three thousand, five hundred and fifty.

As for the Levites, their fathers' tribe, they were not counted among them.

Then God spoke to Moses, saying,

As for the tribe of Levi, you shall not count them nor take a census of their sum among the children of Israel.

And you shall appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the Testimony, and over all its furnishings, and over all that belongs to it; they shall carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings, and they shall attend to it and camp around the tabernacle.

During its journey, the Levites shall disassemble it, and during its encampment, the Levites shall set it up; but any outsider who comes near shall be put to death.

The children of Israel shall encamp, each by his own standard, with the banners of their fathers' houses; they shall camp around the tabernacle of meeting, at a distance from it.

The Levites shall encamp around the tabernacle of the Testimony, so that there may be no wrath on the congregation of the children of Israel; and the Levites shall keep charge of the tabernacle of the Testimony.

So the children of Israel did all that the Lord commanded Moses.
