וּסְלֵיק נָחָשׁ מַלְכָּא דִבְנֵי עַמוֹן וּשְׁרָא עַל יָבֵשׁ גִלְעָד וַאֲמַרוּ כָּל אֱנָשֵׁי יָבֵשׁ לְנָחָשׁ גְזַר לָנָא קְיָם וְנִפְלְחִינָךְ:
And Nahash, the king of the sons of Ammon, went up and besieged Jabesh gilead; and all the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, “Make a treaty with us, and we will serve you.”
וַאֲמַר לְהוֹן נָחָשׁ מַלְכָּא דִבְנֵי עַמוֹן בְּהָדָא אֶגְזַר לְכוֹן בְּמֵיקַר לְכוֹן כָּל עֵינָא דְיַמִינָא וַאֲשַׁוִינָה חִיסוּדָא עַל כָּל יִשְׂרָאֵל:
And Nahash, the king of the sons of Ammon, said to them, “If you do this, I will make a treaty with you in that I gouge out all your right eyes and I put disgrace upon all Israel.”
וַאֲמַרוּ לֵיהּ סָבֵי יָבֵשׁ אוֹרִיךְ לָנָא שַׁבְעָא יוֹמִין וְנִשְׁלַח אִזְגַדִין בְּכָל תְּחוּם יִשְׂרָאֵל וְאִם לֵית דְפָרִיק יָתָנָא וְנִפּוֹק לְוָתָךְ:
The elders of Jabesh said to him, “Wait for us for seven days that we may send messengers through all the territory of the land of Israel. Then, if there is no one to save us, we will come out to you.”
וַאֲתוֹ אִזְגַדַיָא לְגִבְעֲתָא דְשָׁאוּל וּמַלִילוּ פִּתְגָמַיָא קֳדָם עַמָא וַאֲרִימוּ כָל עַמָא יַת קָלֵיהוֹן וּבְכוֹ:
When the messengers came to The Hill of Saul, they spoke the words before thepeople; and all the people lifted up their voice and wept.
וְהָא שָׁאוּל אָתָא בָּתַר תּוֹרַיָא מִן חַקְלָא וַאֲמַר שְׁאוּל מַה לְעַמָא אֲרֵי בָכָן וְאִשְׁתַּעִיאוּ לֵיהּ יַת פִּתְגָמֵי אֱנָשֵׁי יָבֵשׁ:
Now Saul was coming from the field behind the oxen; and Saul said, “What ails the people, that they are weeping?” So they told him the words of the men of Jabesh.
וּשְׁרַת רוּחַ גְבוּרָא מִן קֳדָם יְיָ עַל שָׁאוּל כַּד שְׁמַע יַת פִּתְגָמַיָא הָאִלֵין וּתְקֵיף רוּגְזֵיהּ לַחֲדָא:
And a mighty spirit from before the LORD dwelt upon Saul, when he heard these words, and his anger was very strong.
וּנְסִיב פַּדַן תּוֹרַיָא וְהַדְמֵיהּ וּשְׁלַח בְּכָל תְּחוּם יִשְׂרָאֵל בְּיַד אִזְגַדַיָא לְמֵימַר דְלֵיתוֹהִי נָפֵיק בָּתַר שָׁאוּל וּבָתַר שְׁמוּאֵל כְּדֵין יִתְעֲבֵיד לְתוֹרֵיהּ וּנְפַל זִיעָא מִן קֳדָם יְיָ עַל עַמָא וּנְפָקוּ כְּגַבְרָא חָד:
And he took the yoke of oxen and cut them in pieces and sent them throughout allthe territory of Israel by the hand of messengers, saying, “Whoever does not come out after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done to his ox!” Then the dread from before the LORD fell upon the people, and they came out as one man.
וּמְנִינוּן בְבָזָק וַהֲווֹ בְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל תְּלַת מְאָה אַלְפִין וֶאֱנַשׁ יְהוּדָה תְּלָתִין אַלְפִין:
When he counted them at Bezek, the men of Israel were three hundred thousand and the men of Judah thirty thousand.
וַאֲמַרוּ לְאִזְגַדַיָא דַאֲתוֹ כְּדֵין תֵּימְרוּן לֶאֱנָשׁ יָבֵשׁ גִלְעָד מְחַר תְּהִי לְכוֹן פּוּרְקָנָא בְּמֵיחַם שִׁמְשָׁא וַאֲתוֹ אִזְגַדַיָא וְחַוִיאוּ לֶאֱנָשֵׁי יָבֵשׁ וַחֲדִיאוּ:
And they said to the messengers who had come, “Thus shall you say to the men of Jabesh gilead, ‘Tomorrow, about the heat of the day, you shall experience salvation.’” When the messengers came and told the men of Jabesh, they rejoiced.
וַאֲמַרוּ אֱנָשֵׁי יָבֵשׁ מְחַר נִפּוֹק לְוַתְכוּן וְתַעְבְּדוּן לָנָא כְּכוֹל דְתַקִין בְּעֵינֵיכוֹן:
And the men of Jabesh said, “Tomorrow we will come out to you, and you may do to us whatever seems right in your sight.”
וַהֲוָה בְּיוֹמָא דְבַתְרוֹהִי וּמַנִי שָׁאוּל יַת עַמָא תְּלָתָא מַשִׁירְיָן וַעֲלוֹ בְּגוֹ מַשְׁרִיתָא בְּמַטְרַת צַפְרָא וּמְחוֹ יַת בְּנֵי עַמוֹן עַד מֵיחַם יוֹמָא וַהֲווֹ דְאִשְׁתָּאֲרוֹ וְאִתְבַּדָרוּ וְלָא אִשְׁתָּאֲרוּ בְּהוֹן תְּרֵין דְעַרְקִין כַּחֲדָא:
And on the day after it, Saul put the people in three camps; and they came onto the midst of the camp in the morning watch, and struck down the sons of Ammon until the heat of the day. And those who were left were scattered, so that no two of them were left to flee together.
וַאֲמַר עַמָא לִשְׁמוּאֵל מָא דֵין דִי מְבַסֵר לְמֵימַר לָא כָשַׁר שָׁאוּל לְמִמְלַךְ עֲלָנָא אַיְתוֹ גַבְרַיָא וְנַקְטְלִינוּן:
Then the people said to Samuel, “Who is it that said scornfully, ‘Saul is not fit to reign over us.’ Bring the men, that we may kill them.”
וַאֲמַר שָׁאוּל לָא יִתְקְטֵיל גַבְרָא בְּיוֹמָא הָדֵין אֲרֵי יוֹמָא דֵין עֲבַד יְיָ פּוּרְקָנָא בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל:
But Saul said, “Not a man shall be killed this day, for this day the LORD haswrought salvation in Israel.”
וַאֲמַר שְׁמוּאֵל לְעַמָא אִיתוּ וְנֵזִיל לְגִלְגָלָא וּנְחַדַת תַּמָן מַלְכוּתָא:
Then Samuel said to the people, “Come, let us go to Gilgal and there renew the kingdom.”
וַאֲזַלוּ כָּל עַמָא לְגִלְגָלָא וְאַמְלִיכוּ תַמָן יַת שָׁאוּל קֳדָם יְיָ בְּגִלְגָלָא וּנְכִיסוּ תַמָן נִכְסַת קוּדְשִׁין קֳדָם יְיָ וַחֲדֵי תַמָן שָׁאוּל וְכָל אֱנָשֵׁי יִשְׂרָאֵל עַד לַחֲדָא:
So all the people went to Gilgal, and there they made Saul king before the Lord in Gilgal.
