וּכְנָשׁוּ פְּלִשְׁתָּאֵי יַת כָּל מַשִׁרְיַתְהוֹן לַאֲפֵק וְיִשְׂרָאֵל שָׁרָן בְּעֵינָא דִי בְיִזְרְעֶאל:
Now the Philistines gathered all their forces at Aphek. And Israel encamped by the fountain which is in Jezreel.
וְטוּרְנֵי פְּלִשְׁתָּאֵי עָבְרִין לְמָאֲוָן וּלְאַלְפִין וְדָוִד וְגַבְרוֹהִי עָבְרִין בְּבַתְרַיְתָא עִם אָכִישׁ:
As the chiefs of the Philistines were passing on by hundreds and by thousands, and David and his men were passing on in the rear with Achish,
וַאֲמַרוּ רַבְרְבֵי פְּלִשְׁתָּאֵי מָה יְהוּדָאֵי הָאִלֵין וַאֲמַר אָכִישׁ לְרַבְרְבֵי פְלִשְׁתָּאֵי הֲלָא דֵין דָוִד עַבְדָא דְשָׁאוּל מַלְכָּא דְיִשְׂרָאֵל דַהֲוָה עִמִי דְנַן יוֹמִין אוֹ דְנַן שְׁנִין וְלָא אַשְׁכָּחִית בֵּיהּ מִדַעַם בִּישׁ מִיוֹמָא דְאִתְפְרַשׁ לְוָתִי עַד יוֹמָא הָדֵין:
the commanders of the Philistines said, “Why are these Judaeans here?” And Achish said to the commanders of the Philistines, “Is not this David, the servant of Saul, king of Israel, who has been with me now for days, or rather for years? I have found nothing wrong in him since the day he departed to me to this day.”
וּרְגִיזוּ עֲלוֹהִי רַבְרְבֵי פְלִשְׁתָּאֵי וַאֲמַרוּ לֵיהּ רַבְרְבֵי פְלִשְׁתָּאֵי אָתֵיב יַת גַבְרָא וִיתוּב לְאַתְרֵיהּ דְמַנִיתֵיהּ תַּמָן וְלָא יֵחוֹת עִמָנָא בִּקְרָבָא וְלָא יְהֵי לְשָׂטָן בִּקְרָבָא וּבַמֶה יִתְרְעֵי דֵין לְוַת רִבּוֹנֵיהּ הֲלֹא בְּרֵישֵׁי גַבְרַיָא הָאִינוּן:
But the commanders of the Philistines were angry with him. And the commanders of the Philistines said to him, “Let the man return, that he may return to the place which you have appointed to him. He shall not go down with us to battle, lest in the battle he become an adversary to us. For how could this one please his lord? Would it not be with the heads of these men?
הֲלָא דֵין דָוִד דְמַשְׁמְעִין לֵיהּ בְּחִנְגַיָא לְמֵימָר קְטַל שָׁאוּל בְּאַלְפִין וְדָוִד בְּרִבְוָן:
Is not this David, of whom they proclaimed in dances, ‘Saul has killed by the thousands and David by the ten thousands.’”
וּקְרָא אָכִישׁ לְדָוִד וַאֲמַר לֵיהּ קַיֵם הוּא יְיָ אֲרֵי כָשַׁר אַתְּ וְטַב בְּעֵינַי מַפְקָךְ וּמַעֲלָךְ עִמִי בְּמַשְׁרִיתָא אֲרֵי לָא אַשְׁכָּחִית בָּךְ מִדַעַם בִּישׁ מְיוֹמָא דַאֲתֵיתָא לְוָתִי עַד יוֹמָא הָדֵין וּבְעֵינֵי טוּרְנַיָא לָא תַקֵין אָתְּ:
Then Achish called David and said to him, “As the LORD is the existing One, you have been capable, and it seemed right in my sight that you should go out and come in with me in the army, for I have found nothing wrong in you from the day of your coming to me to this day. But you seem not right in the sight of the chiefs.
וּכְעַן תּוּב וֶאֱזֵיל בִּשְׁלָם וְלָא תַעְבֵיד בִּישׁ בְעֵינֵי טוּרְנֵי פְלִשְׁתָּאֵי:
So return and go in peace, that you may not do anything wrong in the sight of the chiefs of the Philistines.”
וַאֲמַר דָוִד לְאָכִישׁ אֲרֵי מָה עֲבָדִית וּמַה אַשְׁכַּחְתָּא בְעַבְדָךְ מִיוֹמָא דַהֲוֵיתִי מְשַׁמֵשׁ קֳדָמָךְ עַד יוֹמָא הָדֵין אֲרֵי לָא אֱהָךְ וְאַגִיח קְרָבָא בְּשַׂנְאֵי רִבּוֹנִי מַלְכָּא:
And David said to Achish, “But what have I done? What have you found in your servant from the day I commenced serving before you to this day, that I may not go and wage war against the haters of my lord the king?”
וַאֲתֵיב אָכִישׁ וַאֲמַר לְדָוִד יְדַעְנָא אֲרֵי תַקִין אַתְּ בְּעֵינַי כְּמַלְאָכָא דַייָ בְּרַם רַבְרְבֵי פְלִשְׁתָּאֵי אֲמַרוּ לָא יִסַק עִמָנָא בִּקְרָבָא:
And Achish answered and said to David, “I know that you are as right in my sight as an angel of the LORD. Nevertheless the commanders of the Philistines have said, ‘He shall not go up with us to the battle.’
וּכְעַן אַקְדֵים בְּצַפְרָא וְעַבְדֵי רִבּוֹנָךְ דַאֲתוֹ עִמָךְ וּתְקַדְמוּן בְּצַפְרָא וְיִנְהַר לְכוֹן וְתֵיזְלוּן:
Now then rise early in the morning with the servants of your lord who came with you. And you shall rise early in the morning and go as soon as you have light.”
וְאַקְדֵים דָוִד הוּא וְגַבְרוֹהִי לְמֵיזַל בְּצַפְרָא לְמֵתַב לַאֲרַע פְּלִשְׁתָּאֵי וּפְלִשְׁתָּאֵי סְלִיקוּ לְיִזְרְעֶאל:
So David rose early, he and his men, to go in the morning, to return to the land of the Philistines. But the Philistines went up to Jezreel.
