“And he measured the courtyard. It was square, one hundred cubits long and one hundred cubits wide.”¹ 40:47. As mentioned many times,² in the Second Beis HaMikdash, this courtyard was 135 cubits wide, the same width as the Women’s Courtyard, which was also only 135 cubits wide. This verse is referring to the Courtyard before the *Ulam,*that was 76 cubits in length,³ and the eastern wall of the courtyard. as mentioned in sec. 26.

In the Second Beis HaMikdash, this courtyard surrounded the entire building of the Beis HaMikdash, as the Mishnah teaches in Middos, ch. 5:⁴ 5:1. “The Courtyard⁵ states “the Courtyard of the Israelites.” The translation follows the wording of the Mishnah. was 135 cubits wide and 187 cubits long.” The 187 cubits are divided as follows: a) the 76 cubits mentioned above, b) the 100 cubits of the building of the Beis HaMikdash, and c) 11 cubits behind the kapores (i.e., behind the building of the Beis HaMikdash).

The Courtyard was 35 cubits wider than the building of the Beis HaMikdash. These 35 cubits were divided equally, with 17 1/2 cubits on the northern side and 17 1/2 cubits on the southern side of the Beis HaMikdash. In the Future Beis HaMikdash, by contrast, this courtyard will only be 100 cubits wide, the width of the building of the Beis HaMikdash. The area on the sides of the building of the Beis HaMikdash will be included in the external courtyard, as we wrote with regard to the chambers in sec. 71.
