“The length of the Ulam” – from north to south – “was 20 cubits.”¹ 40:49. “The width of the gate was 3 cubits on one side and 3 cubits on the other side.”²48. The intent is that the entire entrance to the Ulam in the Future Beis HaMikdash will be 20 cubits wide. There will be 3 cubits at each end that will be closed, leaving 14 cubits of open space.

In the Second Beis HaMikdash, by contrast, the entire 20 cubits of the Ulam was open across its full length in front of the Sanctuary. Thus, when explaining our Sages’ prohibition against building an exedra that matches the dimensions of the Ulam,³ 43a. Tosafos states that the Ulam was open entirely on its eastern side. This conception is reinforced by our Sages’ statement:⁴ 25a. “[Our] world resembles an exedra; its northern side is not enclosed.”⁵ – is open. It is, nevertheless, referred to as, “the opening⁶ “opening,” implies a structure with a gate or door. of the Ulam,” in many places in the *Talmud.*⁷ 67a, 77a, et al. See also sec. 50 below which continues the discussion of the Ulam. This resembles the expression, “the opening to the Sanctuary,” found in the Torah,⁸ 40:6. and which describes the eastern side of the Sanctuary that was also open entirely. See the explanations in sec. 50 below.

The wall of the Ulam was 5 cubits thick. This is reflected by the phrase,⁹ 40:48 “He measured the doorpost of the Ulam,” which covered the wall. “It was 5 cubits on this side and 5 cubits on the other side.”
