ואיזו שמצלת ממיתה משונה נותנה ואינו יודע למי נותנה—And which is the one that saves from an abnormal death; he gives it but does not know to whom he is giving it

OVERVIEW The גמרא cites two פסוקים which state צדקה תציל ממות, and explains that there are two types of צדקה one which saves a person from דינה של גיהנם and one which saves him ממיתה משונה. The גמרא concludes that the צדקה of נותנה ואינו יודע למי נותנה וכו' saves a person ממיתה משונה.¹ Our תוספות explains why it should not rather save מדינה של גיהנם.

תוספות asks: ואם תאמר אדרבה זאת שהיא מצוה רבה היה לה להציל מדינה של גיהנם שהוא רע ביותר – And if you will say; on the contrary this צדקה of נותנה ואינו יודע למי נותנה וכו', which is a great מצוה, should be the one to save for the punishment of גיהנם, which is much worse than a מיתה משונה! תוספות answers: ואומר רבינו יצחק דרוב דברים אין עומדין לאדם בעולם הזה אלא לאחר מיתה – And the ר"י says that most good deeds do not stand by the person to protect him in this world, but rather they serve him only after death – ובעולם הזה אין עומדין לאדם אלא מצות גדולות – And only the greatest מצות stand by to serve the person in this world – כדתנן (קדושין² דף לט,ב) אלו דברים שאדם אוכל מפירותיו בעולם הזה והקרן קיימת לעולם הבא- And the משנה states; ‘these³ are the things which a person eats its fruit in this world, and the principal is reserved for the world to come’ – לכך קאמר דאפילו⁴ ממיתה משונה דהוי בעולם הזה מצלת: Therefore the גמרא states that the צדקה of נותנה ואינו יודע למי נותנה וכו' is so great that it even saves from a מיתה משונה which is בעוה"ז (and not that it only serves the person בעוה"ב).

SUMMARY Only the greatest מצות help the person even בעוה"ז (such as avoiding a מיתה משונה).

THINKING IT OVER Does the צדקה of נותנה ואינו ידוע למי נותנה כו', save the person מדינה של גיהנם (also⁵)?!⁶
