Psalm 137

The Metsudah siddur: a new linear siddur with English translation by Avrohom Davis, 1981

By the rivers of Babylon,

The Metsudah siddur: a new linear siddur with English translation by Avrohom Davis, 1981

there we sat and we also wept,

The Metsudah siddur: a new linear siddur with English translation by Avrohom Davis, 1981

when we remembered Zion.

The Metsudah siddur: a new linear siddur with English translation by Avrohom Davis, 1981

Upon the willows in its midst,

The Metsudah siddur: a new linear siddur with English translation by Avrohom Davis, 1981

we hung our harps.

The Metsudah siddur: a new linear siddur with English translation by Avrohom Davis, 1981

For there our captors demanded of us

The Metsudah siddur: a new linear siddur with English translation by Avrohom Davis, 1981

words of song,

The Metsudah siddur: a new linear siddur with English translation by Avrohom Davis, 1981

and our tormentors asked of us [with] mirth;

The Metsudah siddur: a new linear siddur with English translation by Avrohom Davis, 1981

Sing to us from the song[s] of Zion.

The Metsudah siddur: a new linear siddur with English translation by Avrohom Davis, 1981

How shall we sing the song of Adonoy

The Metsudah siddur: a new linear siddur with English translation by Avrohom Davis, 1981

on alien soil?

The Metsudah siddur: a new linear siddur with English translation by Avrohom Davis, 1981

If I ever forget you, Jerusalem,

The Metsudah siddur: a new linear siddur with English translation by Avrohom Davis, 1981

may my right hand forget [its movement].

The Metsudah siddur: a new linear siddur with English translation by Avrohom Davis, 1981

May my tongue cleave to my palate,

The Metsudah siddur: a new linear siddur with English translation by Avrohom Davis, 1981

if I remember you not;

The Metsudah siddur: a new linear siddur with English translation by Avrohom Davis, 1981

if I set not Jerusalem

The Metsudah siddur: a new linear siddur with English translation by Avrohom Davis, 1981

above my highest joy.

The Metsudah siddur: a new linear siddur with English translation by Avrohom Davis, 1981

Remember, Adonoy,

to the sons of Edom the day of Jerusalem,

you are the annihilated one;

fortunate is he who will repay you

and kindled lights

of the twelfth month,

And You, in Your abundant mercy,

annulled his counsel,

frustrated his intention,

and brought his evil plan upon his own head,

or sighing on the day of our rest.¹⁵

footnotes: ¹⁵ Even though prayers for personal needs are not recited on Shabbos, this particular prayer does contain such a request, because it is so closely interwoven with the commandment to rest on Shabbos. Since we are commanded to make Shabbos a day of sacred rest, we ask that our repose not be desecrated by distress or misfortune.—Avudraham
