בָּרְ֒כִי נַפְשִׁי אֶת־יְהֹוָה
My soul, bless Adonoy;
יְהֹוָה אֱלֺהַי גָּדַֽלְתָּ מְאֹד,
Adonoy, my God, You are greatly exalted;
הוֹד וְהָדָר
with beauty and splendor
לָבָֽשְׁתָּ:
are You clothed.
עֹֽטֶה אוֹר כַּשַּׂלְמָה,
Enwrapped in light, garment-like,
נוֹטֶה שָׁמַֽיִם כַּיְ֒רִיעָה:
He spreads out the heavens like a curtain.
הַמְ֒קָרֶה
He Who covers
בַמַּֽיִם עֲלִיּוֹתָיו
His upper chambers with water,¹

הַשָּׂם־עָבִים רְכוּבוֹ,
He Who makes clouds His chariot,

He Who walks upon wings of wind.
עֹשֶׂה מַלְאָכָיו רוּחוֹת,
He Who makes winds His messengers,
מְשָׁרְ֒תָיו אֵשׁ לֺהֵט:
flaming fires His servants.
יָסַד אֶֽרֶץ
He Who established the earth
עַל־מְכוֹנֶֽיהָ,
upon its foundations,
בַּל־תִּמּוֹט עוֹלָם וָעֶד:
[so] that it shall never be moved.
תְּהוֹם
The deep,
כַּלְּ֒בוּשׁ כִּסִּיתוֹ,
He covered as with a garment;²

עַל־הָרִים יַֽעַמְ֒דוּ מָֽיִם:

מִן־גַּעֲרָתְ֒ךָ יְנוּסוּן,
At Your shout they retreated,

יַעֲלוּ הָרִים יֵרְ֒דוּ בְקָעוֹת,

אֶל־מְקוֹם זֶה יָסַֽדְתָּ לָהֶם:
to the specific place You founded for them.

He Who sends springs into streams
בֵּין הָרִים יְהַלֵּכוּן:
to flow between the mountains;
יַשְׁקוּ כָּל־חַיְ֒תוֹ שָׂדָי,
to water all the beasts of the fields;
יִשְׁבְּרוּ פְרָאִים צְמָאָם:
the wild ones quench their thirst.
עֲלֵיהֶם עוֹף־הַשָּׁמַֽיִם יִשְׁכּוֹן,
Over them dwell the birds of the sky,
מִבֵּין עֳפָאִים יִתְּ֒נוּ־קוֹל:
from among the branches, they give voice.
מַשְׁקֶה הָרִים
[You] Who waters the mountains
מֵעֲלִיּוֹתָיו,
from His upper chambers,⁶

תִּשְׂבַּע הָאָֽרֶץ:
the earth is sated.
מַצְמִֽיחַ חָצִיר לַבְּ֒הֵמָה
[You] Who causes grass to sprout for cattle,
וְעֵֽשֶׂב לַעֲבֹדַת הָאָדָם,
and vegetation for the labor of man,
לְהוֹצִיא לֶֽחֶם מִן־הָאָֽרֶץ:
to bring forth bread from the earth;
וְיַֽיִן יְשַׂמַּח לְבַב־אֱנוֹשׁ
wine to cheer the heart of man,
לְהַצְהִיל פָּנִים מִשָּֽׁמֶן,
to make [his] face shine from oil,
וְלֶֽחֶם לְבַב־אֱנוֹשׁ יִסְעָד:
and bread to sustain the heart of man.
יִשְׂבְּ֒עוּ עֲצֵי יְהֹוָה
Adonoy's trees are sated,⁸

אַרְ֒זֵי לְבָנוֹן אֲשֶׁר נָטָע:
the cedars of Lebanon that He planted;
אֲשֶׁר־שָׁם צִפֳּרִים יְקַנֵּֽנוּ,
where birds make their nests,
חֲסִידָה בְּרוֹשִׁים בֵּיתָהּ:
the stork—the firs are her home.
הָרִים הַגְּ֒בֹהִים לַיְּ֒עֵלִים,
The high mountains [are] for the wild goats,
סְלָעִים מַחְסֶה לַשְּׁ֒פַנִּים:
the rocks a refuge for the rabbits.
עָשָׂה יָרֵֽחַ לְמוֹעֲדִים
He made the moon to fix seasons
שֶֽׁמֶשׁ יָדַע מְבוֹאוֹ:
the sun knows its place to set.
תָּֽשֶׁת חֽשֶׁךְ וִיהִי לָֽיְלָה,
You make darkness and night comes,
בּוֹ־תִרְמֹשׂ
in which move about
כָּל־חַֽיְ֒תוֹ־יָֽעַר:
all the beasts of the forest.
הַכְּ֒פִירִים שֹׁאֲגִים לַטָּֽרֶף,
—The young lions roar for prey,
וּלְ֒בַקֵּשׁ מֵאֵל אָכְלָם:
and seek their food from the Almighty.
תִּזְרַח הַשֶּֽׁמֶשׁ יֵאָסֵפוּן,
[When] the sun rises, they gather
וְאֶל־מְעוֹנֹתָם יִרְבָּצוּן:
and come into their dens to lie.
יֵצֵא אָדָם לְפָעֳלוֹ,
Man goes out to his work,
וְלַעֲבֹדָתוֹ עֲדֵי־עָֽרֶב:
to his labor until evening.
מָה־רַבּוּ מַעֲשֶֽׂיךָ יְהֹוָה
How many are Your works, Adonoy!
כֻּלָּם בְּחָכְמָה עָשִֽׂיתָ,
You made them all with wisdom;
מָלְ֒אָה הָאָֽרֶץ קִנְיָנֶֽךָ:
the earth is full of Your possessions!
זֶה הַיָּם גָּדוֹל וּרְ֒חַב יָדָֽיִם
This sea, great and wide—
שָׁם־רֶֽמֶשׂ וְאֵין מִסְפָּר,
therein are innumerable creeping things,
חַיּוֹת קְטַנּוֹת עִם־גְּדֹלוֹת:
animals small and great.
שָׁם אֳנִיּוֹת יְהַלֵּכוּן,
There ships travel;
לִוְיָתָן זֶה
this Leviathan⁹

יָצַֽרְתָּ לְשַֽׂחֶק־בּוֹ:
You formed to frolic with.
כֻּלָּם אֵלֶֽיךָ יְשַׂבֵּרוּן,
They all look to You expectantly,
לָתֵת אָכְלָם בְּעִתּוֹ:
to provide their food in its time.
תִּתֵּן לָהֶם
[When] You give it to them,
יִלְקֹטוּן,
they gather it in;
תִּפְתַּח יָדְ֒ךָ
[when] You open Your hand,
יִשְׂבְּעוּן טוֹב:
they are sated with goodness.
תַּסְתִּיר פָּנֶֽיךָ
Whey You hide Your face,¹⁰

יִבָּהֵלוּן
they are panic-stricken;
תֹּסֵף רוּחָם יִגְוָעוּן,
When You gather in their breath, they perish,
וְאֶל־עֲפָרָם יְשׁוּבוּן:
and to their dust they return.
תְּשַׁלַּח רוּחֲךָ
When You send Your spirit,¹¹

יִבָּרֵאוּן,
they will be created [anew];
וּתְ֒חַדֵּשׁ פְּנֵי אֲדָמָה:
and You will renew the face of the earth.
יְהִי כְבוֹד יְהֹוָה לְעוֹלָם,
The glory of Adonoy will endure forever,
יִשְׂמַח יְהֹוָה בְּמַעֲשָׂיו:
Adonoy will rejoice in His works—
הַמַּבִּיט לָאָֽרֶץ וַתִּרְעָד,
Who gazes upon the earth and it trembles;
יִגַּע בֶּהָרִים וְיֶעֱשָֽׁנוּ:
Who touches the mountains and they erupt.
אָשִֽׁירָה לַּיהוָֹה בְּחַיָּי,
I will sing to Adonoy with my life;
אֲזַמְּ֒רָה לֵאלֺהַי
I will offer hymns to my God
בְּעוֹדִי:
as long as I am alive.
יֶעֱרַב עָלָיו שִׂיחִי,
May my words be pleasant to Him;
אָנֹכִי אֶשְׂמַח בַּיהוָֹה:
I will rejoice in Adonoy.¹²

יִתַּֽמּוּ חַטָּאִים מִן־הָאָֽרֶץ
Sin will be excised from the earth,
וּרְ֒שָׁעִים עוֹד אֵינָם
and the wicked will be no more;
בָּרְ֒כִי נַפְשִׁי אֶת־יְהֹוָה
My soul bless Adonoy,
הַלְ֒לוּיָהּ:
