In the third year of the reign of Yehoyaqim king of Yehuda, Nevukhadneżżar king of Bavel came to Yerushalayim, and besieged it.
In the third year of [the rebellion of] the kingdom of Judah [(against Nevuchadnezzar), viz. II Kings 24:1], Nevuchadnezzar king of Bavel came to Jerusalem, and he besieged it.
And the Lord gave Yehoyaqim king of Yehuda into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God: which he carried into the land of Shin῾ar to the house of his god; and he brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god.
And the L-rd delivered into his hand Yehoyakim king of Judah and some of the vessels of the house of G-d, and he brought them [(the captives and the vessels)] to the land of Shinar to the house of his god [(in celebration of his victory)], and the vessels he [afterwards] brought to the treasure house of his god.
And the king spoke to Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring some of the children of Yisra᾽el and of the king’s seed, and of the nobles;
And the king told Ashpenaz, the chief of his eunuchs, to bring forth from the children of Israel and from the seed of the kingdom and from the nobles,
youths in whom was no blemish, but well favoured, and skilful in all wisdom, and discerning in knowledge, and perceptive in understanding, and such as had ability in them to stand in the king’s palace, and whom they might teach the learning and the tongue of the Kasdim.
boys without any blemish, and of goodly appearance, and acquainted with all wisdom, and possessing understanding and insight, and having the strength in them to attend [deferentially] in the palace of the king and to be taught the script and the speech of the Kasdim.
And the king appointed them a daily provision of the king’s food and of the wine which he drank; that they should be thus reared for three years, and at the end of that time, they might stand before the king.
And the king provided for them daily from the pathbag [(the food)] of the king, and from the wine that he drank, to be reared [on this regimen] for three years, [after which] some would [be selected to] pay attendance upon the king.
Now among these were of the children of Yehuda: Daniyyel, Ḥananya, Misha᾽el, and ῾Azarya:
And there were of them of the sons of Judah — Daniel, Chananiah, Mishael, and Azaryah.
to whom the chief of the eunuchs gave names: for he gave to Daniyyel the name of Belteshażżar; and to Ḥananya, of Shadrakh; and to Misha᾽el, of Meshakh; and to ῾Azarya, of ῾Aved-nego.
And the chief of the eunuchs gave them names. He called Daniel "Belshazzar"; Chananiah, "Shadrach"; Mishael, "Meshach," and Azaryah, "Aved-nego."
But Daniyyel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s food, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the chief of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.
And Daniel resolved that he would not sully himself with the pathbag of the king and the wine that he drank. And he besought the chief of the eunuchs that he not [be compelled to] sully himself.
Now God had brought Daniyyel into grace and compassion with the chief of the eunuchs.
And G-d rendered Daniel the object of lovingkindness and mercy before the chief of the eunuchs.
And the chief of the eunuchs said to Daniyyel, I fear my lord the king, who has appointed your food and your drink: for why should he see you looking more woebegone than other youths of your age? for then you should endanger my head to the king.
And the chief of the eunuchs said to Daniel: I fear my master, the king, who has provided your food and your drink. Why should he see your faces more haggard than (those of) the (other) boys of your age, whereby you would render my head [i.e., my life] liable to the king.
Then Daniyyel said to the steward whom the chief of the eunuchs has set over Daniyyel, Ḥananya, Misha᾽el, and ῾Azarya,
And Daniel said to the steward whom the chief of the eunuchs had appointed over Daniel, Chananiah, Mishael, and Azaryah:
Put thy servants to the proof I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us vegetables to eat, and water to drink.
Try, I pray you, your servants, for ten days, and let them give us legumes to eat and water to drink.
Then let our appearances, and the appearances of the youths that eat of the king’s food be observed by you; and as thou seest, so deal with thy servants.
And let there be seen [and compared] before you our appearance and the appearance of the children that eat of the pathbag of the king, and, according to what you see, do with your servants.
So he consented to them in this matter, and put them to the proof for ten days.
And he listened to them in this thing, and he tried them for ten days.
And at the end of ten days they appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the youths who did eat the portion of the king’s fare.
And, at the end of ten days, their appearance looked better and fuller fleshed than (that of) all of the boys who had eaten the pathbag of the king.
So the steward took away the food and the wine that they should have drunk; and gave them vegetables.
And the steward took their pathbag and their wine to drink [for himself] and gave them legumes.
As for these four youths, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniyyel had understanding in all visions and dreams.
And these boys, the four of them, were given understanding and knowledge of all writing and wisdom by G-d, and Daniel understood all visions and dreams.
Now at the end of the days that the king had said he should bring them in, then the chief of the eunuchs brought them in before Nevukhadneżżar.
And at the end of the days that the king had said to bring them [before him], the chief of the eunuchs brought them before Nevuchadnezzar.
And the king spoke with them; and among them all was found none like Daniyyel, Ḥananya, Misha᾽el, and ῾Azarya: therefore they stood before the king.
And the king spoke with them, and there were not found in all of them [(the other boys)] the likes of Daniel, Chananiah, Mishael, and Azaryah. And they stood [in attendance] before the king.
And in all matters of wisdom and understanding that the king inquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and conjurers who were in all his realm.
And anything requiring the wisdom of understanding which the king asked of them, he found in them ten times as much as in all the bone-conjurers and astrologers in all of his kingdom.
וַֽיְהִי֙ דָּֽנִיֵּ֔אל עַד־שְׁנַ֥ת אַחַ֖ת לְכ֥וֹרֶשׁ הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃{ס}
And Daniyyel continued to the first year of Koresh the king.
And Daniel was [i.e., he officiated in grandeur in Bavel] until the first year of King Koresh.
