We turned and traveled into the wilderness by way of the Reed Sea [route] as Adonoy had told me, and we circled Mount Seir a long time.

Then we turned, and took our journey into the wilderness by the way of the Sea of Suf, as the Lord spoke to me: and we went about mount Se῾ir many days.

And we turned back and we traveled through the desert in the direction of the Red Sea, as the L-rd had spoken to me. And we went around Mount Seir [the entire south side until the land of Moav], many days.

Adonoy said to me to say,

And the Lord spoke to me, saying,

And the L-rd said to me:

‘‘Enough of you circling this mountain! Turn yourselves northward.

You have compassed this mountain long enough: turn northwards.

You have gone around this mountain long enough — turn to the north [to the east of Moav].

And command the people as follows, ‘‘You are crossing into the border of your brothers, the descendants of Eisov who live in Seir. They will be afraid of you, so you must be extrememly cautious.

And command the people, saying, You are to pass through the border of your brethren the children of ῾Esav, who dwell in Se῾ir; and they shall be afraid of you: take good heed to yourselves therefore:

And the people, charge, saying: You are to pass through the boundary of your brothers, the sons of Esav, who dwell in Seir. They shall fear you; and take great heed:

Do not incite them. For I will not give you of their land as much as a footstep, because for Eisov’s inheritance have I designated Mount Seir.

meddle not with them; for I will not give you of their land, no, not so much as a foot breadth; because I have given mount Se῾ir to ῾Esav for a possession.

Do not incite them: For I shall not allow you [to pass through] their land [without their consent] as much as the space of a footstep, for as an inheritance to Esav have I given the mountain of Seir.

Food are you to buy from them with money and eat [it]; also water are you to purchase from them with money and drink [it.]

You shall buy food of them for money, that you may eat; and you shall also buy water of them for money, that you may drink.

Food shall you buy of them with money, and you shall eat; and also water shall you buy of them with money, and you shall drink.

For Adonoy, your God, has blessed you in all your handiwork; He has been intimately concerned with your traversing this great wilderness. It is now forty years [that] Adonoy, your God, is accompanying you; you have lacked nothing.’’

For the Lord thy God has blessed thee in all the work of thy hand: he knows thy walking through this great wilderness: these forty years the Lord thy God has been with thee; thou hast lacked nothing.

For the L-rd your G-d has blessed you in all the work of your hand [(Therefore, do not manifest ingratitude for His bounty by showing yourselves poor, but show yourselves rich)]. He knew (i.e., provided for) your going through this vast desert. These forty years the L-rd your G-d has been with you; you have lacked nothing.

We passed over from our brothers, the descendants of Eisov, who live in Seir, from the Arava road, from Eilas and from Etzyon-Gover. We turned and passed over by way of the wilderness of Moav.

And when we passed by from our brethren the children of ῾Esav, who dwelt in Se῾ir, through the way of the ῾Arava from Elat and from ῾Eżyon-gever, we turned and passed by the way of the wilderness of Mo᾽av.

And we passed from our brothers, the sons of Esav, who dwelt in Seir, by way of the plain, from Eilath and from Etzyon Gaver. And we turned [north] and we passed by the desert of Moav, [proceeding on the eastern side].

Adonoy said to me, ‘‘Do not besiege Moav and do not intimidate them with war. For I will not give you [any] of his land as inheritance, for to Lot’s descendants have I given Or as inheritance.

And the Lord said to me, Do not harass Mo᾽av, nor contend with them in battle: for I will not give thee of their land for a possession; because I have given ῾Ar to the children of Lot for a possession.

And the L-rd said to me: Do not besiege Moav and do not incite a war against them; for I shall not give to you of his land as an inheritance; for to the children of Lot have I given Ar [(the province)] as an inheritance.

The Eimim originally lived there—a people great and numerous and powerful like the Anokim.

(The Emim dwelt there in times past, a people great, and many, and tall, like the ῾Anaqim;

The Eimim [so called because men were in dread (eimah) of them] had dwelt there formerly, a people, great, many, and lofty, like the Anakim, [but this is not the land of Refaim that I promised to Abraham (Genesis 15:20)],

They, too, were considered Refaim like the Anokim; the Moabites called them Eimim.

who also were considered Refa᾽im as the ῾Anaqim; but the Mo᾽avim call them Emim.

For they, [the Eimim], too, are reckoned refaim [(giants) so called because the hands of all who see them are "weakened" (mithrapoth)], like the Anakim, [who are called "refaim"]; and the Moavites called them "Eimim." [And I drove out the Eimim-Refaim and placed the children of Lot in their place].

And in Seir lived the Chorim originally, but the descendants of Eisov inherited them and drove them out [to make room] for themselves and settled in their stead, as Yisroel will have done to the land of its inheritance that Adonoy has given them.

The Ḥorim also dwelt in Se῾ir beforetime; but the children of ῾Esav succeeded them, and they destroyed them from before them, and dwelt in their place; as Yisra᾽el did to the land of his possession, which the Lord gave to them.)

And, [likewise,] in Seir, the Chorim dwelt formerly, and the sons of Esav would drive them out and destroy them before them, and they dwelt in their place, as Israel did in the land of its inheritance, which the L-rd gave to them.

Now, arise and cross for yourselves Wadi Zered.’’ And we crossed Wadi Zered.

Now rise up, and get you over the wadi Zered. And we went over the wadi Zered.

Now, arise and cross over the stream of Zared. And we crossed over the stream of Zared.

The time that [it took] us to go from Kadeish Barnei’a until we crossed Wadi Zered was thirty-eight years, until the end of the entire generation, the men of war, from within the camp, as Adonoy had sworn about them.

And the days in which we came from Qadesh-Barnea, until we were come over the wadi Zered, were thirty eight years; until all the generation of the men of war were wasted out from among the host, as the Lord swore to them.

And the days which we went from Kadesh Barnea until we crossed the stream of Zared were thirty-eight years, until the end of all the generation of the men of war from the midst of the camp, as the L-rd swore to them.

Adonoy’s plague, too, attacked them to rout them from within the camp, until their end.

For indeed the hand of the Lord was against them, to destroy them from among the host, until they were consumed.

And the hand of the L-rd was against them, too, to [hasten to] confound them from the midst of the camp until their end [within the forty years, so that their children be detained no longer in the desert.]

When they had finished—all the men of war—to die out from among the people;

So it came to pass, when all the men of war were consumed and dead from among the people,

And it was, when all the men of war [(those from the age of twenty)] had finished dying from amidst the people,

Adonoy addressed me, to say,

that the Lord spoke to me, saying,

That the L-rd spoke (vayedaber) to me, [the L-rd not having spoken to me directly and affectionately (this being the connotation of "vayedaber") all those years from the sending of the spies until now], saying:

‘‘You are today crossing the border of Moav—at ‘Or.

Thou art to pass over through ῾Ar, the border of Mo᾽av, this day:

You are passing this day the border of Moav, Ar.

When you approach [the area] facing the descendants of Ammon, do not besiege them and do not intimidate them, for I will not give you of the land of the descendants of Ammon an inheritance, because to the descendants of Lot have I given it as an inheritance.

and when thou comest near, opposite the children of ῾Ammon, harass them not, nor contend with them: for I will not give thee of the land of the children of ῾Ammon any possession; because I have given it to the children of Lot for a possession.

And you shall draw opposite the children of Ammon [(whence it is seen that Ammon is to the north of Moav)]. Do not besiege them and do not incite them [at all (not only to war, as in the instance of Moav (9), this in reward for the modesty of their progenitor (the younger daughter of Lot, who, (unlike her sister) in naming her child concealed the fact that she had begotten him from her father (see Genesis 19:37-38)]. For I shall not give you of the land of the children of Ammon as an inheritance. For to the children of Lot have I given it as an inheritance.

It, too, is considered a land of giants; giants having lived in it originally—the Ammonites called them Zamzumim.

(That also was considered a land of Refa᾽im: Refa᾽im dwelt therein in old time; and the ῾Ammonim call them Zamzummim.

That, too, was reckoned a land of refaim, [for] refaim dwelt there formerly (and the Ammonites called them zamzumim) [but this is not the land of the Refaim that I promised to Abraham],

A people great and numerous and powerful like the Anokim. Adonoy destroyed them from before them, and they drove them out and settled in their stead.

A people great, and many, and tall, like the ῾Anaqim; but the Lord destroyed them before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their place:

A people, great, many, and lofty, like the Anakim. And the L-rd destroyed them before them (the Ammonites), and they drove them out and dwelt in their place.

As He had done to the descendants of Eisov living in Seir, from before whom He destroyed the Chori, and they drove them out and settled in their stead until today.

as he did to the children of ῾Esav, who dwelt in Se῾ir, when he destroyed the Ḥorim from before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead until this very day:

As He did for the sons of Esav, who dwell in Seir, destroying the Chori before them. And they [progressively] drove them out, and they dwell in their place until this day.

And the Avim who had been living in Chatzeirim till Azah—Caftorim who had left Caftor destroyed them and settled in their stead.

and the ῾Avvim who dwelt in Ḥażerim, as far as ῾Azza; Kaftorim who came from Kaftor, destroyed them and dwelt in their stead.)

And the Avim [Philistines], who dwelt in Chatzerim as far as Azzah [— Although by Abraham's oath to Avimelech, king of the Philistines, (Genesis 21:24), it would not be permitted to take their land], Kaftorim, who came out of Kaftor destroyed them [the Avim] and dwelt in their place, [so that it is now permitted to take that land.]

Arise to travel, and cross Wadi Arnon. See, I have put into your hand Sichon, King of Cheshbon, the Emorite and his land—begin inheriting [it] by intimidating him with war.

Rise up, take your journey, and pass over the wadi Arnon: behold, I have given into thy hand Siĥon the Emorite, king of Ḥeshbon, and his land: begin to possess it, and contend with him in battle.

Arise, journey, and cross the stream of Arnon. See, I have given in your hand Sichon, the king of Cheshbon, the Emori, and his land. Begin to drive (him) out, and incite a war against him.

Today I begin to place fear of you and awe of you upon the peoples under the whole heaven, so that they will hear your reputation and will shiver and tremble before you.’’

This day will I begin to put the dread of thee and the fear of thee upon the nations that are under the whole heaven, who shall hear report of thee, and shall tremble, and quake because of thee.

This day I shall begin to place your awe and your fear upon the face of the peoples under all the heavens, who will hear of your renown, and who will tremble and shudder before you [(whence it is derived that the sun stood still for Moses in this battle and it became known "under all the heavens.")]

I sent emissaries from the wilderness of Kedeimos to Sichon, King of Cheshbon, with the following peaceful statement:

And I sent messengers out of the wilderness of Qedemot to Siĥon king of Ḥeshbon with words of peace, saying,

And I sent messengers from the desert of Kedemoth [Sinai] to Sichon, king of Moav, (with) words of peace [(Though I was not commanded to seek peace with Sichon, I learned from the Torah (given at Sinai), which preceded (kadmah) the world (hence "kedemoth") to pursue peace, the Holy One Blessed be He (in pursuit of peace) offering the Torah to all of the other nations, though He knew they would not accept it, before He gave it to Israel)], saying:

‘‘Let me pass through your land. I will travel only on the highway, I will not deviate right or left.

Let me pass through thy land: I will go along by the high way, I will neither turn to the right hand nor to the left.

Let me pass through your land. I will go only by the (main) road; I will turn neither right nor left.

Food for money sell me so I can eat, and water for money sell me so I can drink—just let me cross on foot.

Thou shall sell me food for money, that I may eat; and give me water for money, that I may drink: only I will pass through with those who follow me;

You shall sell me food for money and I shall eat; and water for money shall you give me and I shall drink. Only let me pass through on my feet.

As the descendants of Eisov did for me who live in Seir and the Moavites who live in Or; until I will have crossed the Yardein into the land that Adonoy, our God, is giving us.’’

(as the children of ῾Esav who dwell in Se῾ir, and the Mo᾽avim who dwell in ῾Ar, did to me;) until I shall pass over the Yarden into the land which the Lord our God gives us.

As there did for me [re food and drink] the sons of Esav, who dwell in Seir, and the Moavites, who dwell in Ar, until I cross the Jordan to the land that the L-rd our G-d is giving us.

But Sichon, King of Cheshbon, was not willing to let us traverse it, because Adonoy, your God, had hardened his spirit and emboldened his mind in order to put him in your hand this day.

But Siĥon king of Ḥeshbon would not let us pass by him: for the Lord thy God hardened his spirit, and made his heart obstinate, that he might deliver him into thy hand, as is apparent this day.

But Sichon the king of Cheshbon would not allow us to pass through him. For the L-rd your G-d hardened his spirit and fortified his heart, to deliver him into your hand as of this day.

Adonoy said to me, ‘‘See, I have begun defeating before you Sichon and his land. Begin inheriting—to inherit his land.’’

And the Lord said to me, Behold, I have begun to give Siĥon and his land before thee: begin to possess, that thou mayst inherit his land.

And the L-rd said to me: See, I have begun to give before you Sichon and his land [(He lowered the tutelary angel of the Emorites beneath Moses' feet and had them tread on his neck)]. Begin to drive (him) out, to inherit his land.

And Sichon went out toward us, he and his entire people, to wage war in Yahatz.

Then Siĥon came out against us, he and all his people, to fight at Yahaż.

And Sichon went out against us, [(not sending to Og for assistance, each being "self-sufficient")], he and all his people, to war, to Yahatz.

Adonoy, our God, defeated him before us, and we smote him and his sons and his entire people.

And the Lord our God delivered him before us; and we smote him, and his sons, and all his people.

And the L-rd our G-d delivered him before us, and we smote him and his sons [(The written form is "son" — he had a son as mighty as he)], and all his people.

We conquered all his cities at that time and annihilated every city’s men, woman, and children; we left no survivor.

And we took all his cities at that time, and devoted to destruction every city, the men, and the women, and the little ones; we left none remaining:

And we conquered all of his cities at that time. And we laid waste the entire city: men, women, and children; we left no remnant.

Only the animals we plundered for ourselves, and the booty of the cities that we conquered.

only the cattle we took for a prey to ourselves, and the spoil of the cities which we took;

Only the beasts did we take for ourselves, and the spoil of the cities which we conquered.

From Aroer, which is on the bank of Wadi Arnon—and the city that is in the wadi—up to Gilad, there was no city that was stronger than we. All of it did Adonoy, our God, defeat before us.

From ῾Aro῾er, which is by the edge of the wadi of Arnon, and from the city that is by the wadi, as far as Gil῾ad, there was not one city too strong for us: the Lord our God delivered all to us:

From Aroer, by the bank of the stream of Arnon and the city by the stream until Gilead. There was no city which was too formidable for us. All, the L-rd our G-d delivered before us.

Only the land of the descendants of Ammon did you not attack—all along Wadi Yabok and the hill cities—everything Adonoy, our God, commanded.

only to the land of the children of ῾Ammon thou didst not come, nor to any place of the torrent of Yabboq, nor to the cities in the mountains, nor to whatever place the Lord our God forbad us.

Only to the land of the children of Ammon did you not come near. All [that is] alongside the stream of Yabbok and the cities of the mountain, and all that the L-rd our G-d commanded [not to conquer, we left alone.]
