Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

And Moshe answered and said, But, behold they will not believe me, nor hearken to my voice: for they will say, The Lord has not appeared to thee.

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And Moses answered and he said: But they will not believe me, and they will not hearken to my voice; for they will say: The L-rd did not appear to you.

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

[God] said, “Throw it on the ground.” He [Moshe] threw it on the ground and it turned into a snake. Moshe ran away from it.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

And he said, A rod. And he said, Cast it on the ground. And he cast it on the ground, and it turned into a snake; and Moshe fled from it.

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And He said: Throw it to the ground. And he threw it to the ground and it became a serpent, [a "hint" to Moses that he had plied the serpent's craft — slander (in saying that the Jews would not believe him)], and Moses fled from before it.

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

Adonoy said to Moshe, “Reach out your hand and grasp its tail.” He reached out his hand and took hold of it, and it became a rod in his hand.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

And the Lord said to Moshe, Put out thy hand, and take it by its tail. And he put out his hand, and caught it, and it became a rod in his hand:

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And the L-rd said to Moses: Stretch out your hand and seize its tail. And he stretched out his hand and grasped it, and it became a staff in his hand.

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

“This is so that they will believe that Adonoy appeared to you; the God of their fathers, God of Avraham, God of Yitzchok and God of Yaakov.”

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

that they may believe that the Lord God of their fathers, the God of Avraham, the God of Yiżĥaq, and the God of Ya῾aqov, has appeared to thee.

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

So that they believe that the L-rd appeared to you, the G-d of their fathers, the G-d of Abraham, the G-d of Isaac, and the G-d of Jacob.

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

Adonoy said furthermore to him [Moshe], “Put your hand into your bosom.” He put his hand into his bosom, and when he withdrew it, his hand had become a snow-like tzora’as.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

And the Lord said furthermore to him, Put now thy hand into thy bosom. And he put his hand into his bosom: and when he took it out, behold, his hand was diseased, as white as snow.

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And the L-rd said to him again: Put your hand into your bosom. And he put his hand into his bosom and he took it out, and, behold, it was leprous as snow [(leprosy being the punishment for slander (see Numbers 12)].

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

He [Adonoy] said, “Put your hand into your bosom again.” [Moshe] put his hand into his bosom again, and when he withdrew it from his bosom, it had become [normal] as his flesh.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

And he said, Put thy hand into thy bosom again. And he put his hand into his bosom again; and when he took it out of his bosom, behold, it was turned again as his other flesh.

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And He said: Return your hand to your bosom, and he returned his hand to his bosom. And he took it from his bosom, and, behold, it had resumed its fleshy appearance, [whence it is derived that G-d's goodly measure is more expeditious than His punitive one ("from his bosom," as opposed to "took it out," above, implying that it had healed upon contact with his bosom)].

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

“If they do not believe you, and they do not listen to the voice [of proof] of the first [miraculous] sign; then they will believe the voice [of proof] of the latter [second] sign.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

And it shall come to pass, if they will not believe thee, nor hearken to the voice of the first sign, that they will believe the voice of the latter sign.

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And it shall be, if they do not believe you, and they do not hearken to the message of the first sign, then they will believe the message of the last sign, [already having precedent (— as in the instance of Pharaoh and Avimelech, who were smitten with plague because of Sarah —) that the intenders of harm to them are smitten with plague.]

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

And if they will not believe even these two signs, and they will not listen to your voice, then you shall take from the water of the river and pour it on the dry land. The water that you will take from the river will turn into blood on the dry land.”

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

And it shall come to pass, if they will not believe even these two signs, nor hearken to thy voice, that thou shalt take of the water of the River, and pour it upon the dry land: and the water which thou dost take out of the River shall become blood on the dry land.

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And it shall be, if they do not believe, also these two signs, and they do not hearken to your voice, then you shall take of the waters of the Nile, and you shall spill it upon the dry land. And the waters that you take from the Nile — they shall become blood upon the dry land.

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

Moshe said to Adonoy, “I beg You Adonoy, I am not a man of words—not since yesterday, not since the day before—not from the time You [first] spoke to Your servant, for I am clumsy [slow] of mouth [speech] and clumsy [slow] of tongue [language].”

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

And Moshe said to the Lord, O my Lord, I am not an eloquent man, neither yesterday nor the day before, nor since thou hast spoken to thy servant: but I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue.

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And Moses said to the L-rd: I pray You, O L-rd, I am not a man of words, also [(connoting an additional day)] from yesterday, also from the day before, also from when You began to speak to Your servant [this being the seventh day of Moses' opposition to the mission (in deference to Aaron's seniority)]; for heavy of speech and heavy of tongue am I.

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

And the Lord said to him, Who has made man’s mouth? or who makes a man dumb, or deaf, or seeing, or blind? is it not I the Lord?

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And the L-rd said to him: Who made a mouth for man, or who makes one mute or deaf or seeing or blind? Is it not I, the L-rd?

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And he said: I pray You, O L-rd, send, now, by the hand of [him] You are wont to send [i.e., Aaron].

Adonoy displayed anger toward Moshe and said, “Is not Aharon, the Levite, your brother? I know that he knows how to speak. Behold he is setting out to meet you, and when he sees you he will rejoice in his heart.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

And the anger of the Lord burned against Moshe, and he said, Is not Aharon the Levite thy brother? I know that he can speak well. And also, behold, he comes to meet thee: and when he sees thee, he will be glad in his heart.

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And the anger of the L-rd burned against Moses, and He said: Is not Aaron your brother the Levite? [i.e., He was destined to be the Levite, and you, the Cohein — Now, he shall be the Cohein, and you, the Levite]. I knew that he shall surely speak. And, also, behold, he shall come out towards you [when you go to Egypt] and he shall see you and he shall rejoice in his heart [and he will not (as you think) be offended by your rise to eminence (for which reason Aaron merited the choshen, the breast-plate, worn over the heart)].
