Afterwards Moshe and Aharon went and said to Pharaoh, “This is what Adonoy, God of Yisrael said, ‘Send My people, so they may celebrate a festival to Me in the wilderness.”
And afterwards Moshe and Aharon went in, and told Par῾o, Thus says the Lord God of Yisra᾽el, Let my people go, that they may hold a feast to me in the wilderness.
And afterwards Moses and Aaron came [(but the elders, in fear of going, fell off one by one)], and they said to Pharaoh: Thus said the L-rd, the G-d of Israel: Send My people that they may make a festival unto Me in the desert.
Pharaoh said, “Who is Adonoy that I should obey his voice, to let Yisrael go. I do not know Adonoy, nor will I let [the B’nei] Yisrael go.”
And Par῾o said, Who is the Lord, that I should obey his voice to let Yisra᾽el go? I know not the Lord, nor will I let Yisra᾽el go.
And Pharaoh said: Who is the L-rd that I should hearken to His voice to send out Israel? I do not know the L-rd and I shall also not send out Israel.
They said [to him], “The God of the Hebrews has revealed Himself to us. Please allow us to take a three day journey into the wilderness, and let us sacrifice to Adonoy, our God, lest He strike us with the plague or with the sword.”
And they said, The God of the Hebrews has met with us: let us go, we pray thee, three days’ journey into the desert, and sacrifice to the Lord our God; lest he fall upon us with pestilence, or with the sword.
And they said: The G-d of the Hebrews revealed Himself to us. Let us go, we pray you, a three days' distance in the desert and sacrifice to the L-rd our G-d lest He smite us [(instead of "smite you," in deference to royalty)] with pestilence or with the sword.
The king of Egypt said to them, “Why, Moshe and Aharon, are you distracting the people from their work? Get back to your burdens.”
And the king of Miżrayim said to them, Why do you, Moshe and Aharon, distract the people from their works? get you to your burdens.
And the king of Egypt said to them: Why, Moses and Aaron, would you distance the people from their work? Go to your labors [at home (the tribe of Levi being exempt from the servitude of Egypt)].
Then Pharaoh said, “Behold, the people of the land are now many, and you want them to take leave from their hard work.”
And Par῾o, said, Behold, the people of the land now are many, and you make them rest from their burdens.
And Pharaoh said: The people of the land are many now, and you would quit them of their toils.
That day, Pharaoh commanded the taskmasters of the people and their officers, saying,
And Par῾o the same day commanded the taskmasters of the people, and their officers, saying,
And Pharaoh commanded on that day the taskmasters [Egyptians] of the people and its officers [Hebrews], saying:
“You shall no longer give the people straw to make bricks as before. Let them go gather [their own] straw,
You shall no more give the people straw to make brick, as heretofore: let them go and gather straw for themselves.
Do not continue to give stubble to the people [to knead with clay] to make bricks as heretofore. Let them go and collect stubble for themselves.
[And] the quota of bricks that they made before, you shall place upon them; do not reduce it, for they are lazy and therefore they cry out, saying, ‘We want to go sacrifice to our God.’
And the quantity of the bricks, which they did make heretofore, you shall lay upon them; you shall not diminish aught of it: for they are idle; therefore they cry, saying, Let us go and sacrifice to our God.
And the quota of bricks which they made heretofore you shall impose upon them. Do not reduce it. For they are idling. That is why are they crying out: "Let us go and sacrifice to our G-d!"
Make the workload heavier on the men, and make them do it. Let them not talk about false ideas.”
Let more work be laid upon the men, that they may labour in it; and let them not regard vain words.
Let the labor be heavy on the men and let them do it, and let them not speak vain words.
They went out—the taskmasters of the people and their officers—and spoke to the people, saying, “This is what Pharaoh said, ‘I will no longer give you straw.
And the taskmasters of the people went out, and their officers, and they spoke to the people, saying, Thus says Par῾o, I will not give you straw.
And the taskmasters of the people went out, and its officers, and they said to the people: Thus has Pharaoh said: I shall not give you stubble.
You must go get your own straw wherever you can find it, but your workload must not be reduced.’”
Go, get you straw wherever you can find it: yet nothing of your work shall be diminished.
You, go [quickly]; take for yourselves stubble wherever you find it. For nothing must be diminished from your work [quota].
The people spread out all over Egypt to gather grain-chaff for straw.
So the people were scattered abroad throughout all the land of Miżrayim to gather stubble for straw.
And the people spread out throughout the land of Egypt to gather straw for the stubble.
The taskmasters pressured them saying, “You must complete your daily work [quota], just as [before] when there was straw.”
And the taskmasters urged them on, saying, Fulfill your work, your daily tasks, as when there was straw.
And the taskmasters pressed [upon them], saying: Finish your work, the [entire] day's quota in its day, as it was when the stubble was [supplied to you].
The officers of the B’nei Yisrael were beaten—those whom Pharaoh’s taskmasters had appointed—and were told, “Why have you not completed your quotas of brick making as you did yesterday and before neither yesterday, nor today?”
And the officers of the children of Yisra᾽el, whom Par῾o’s taskmasters had set over them, were beaten, saying, Wherefore have you not fulfilled your task in making brick both yesterday and today, as heretofore?
And the officers of the children of Israel, whom the taskmasters of Pharaoh placed over them, were smitten, (the taskmasters) saying: Why did you not finish your brick-making quota as of three days ago, both yesterday and today?
The officers of the B’nei Yisrael came and cried out to Pharaoh, saying “Why are you doing this to your slaves?
Then the officers of the children of Yisra᾽el came and cried to Par῾o, saying, Why dost thou deal thus with thy servants?
And the officers of the children of Israel came and they cried out to Pharaoh, saying: Why should you do thus to your servants!
Your slaves are not given straw, and yet we are told to make bricks. Your slaves are beaten, and it is a sin for your people.”
There is no straw given to thy servants, and they say to us, Make bricks: and, behold, thy servants are beaten; but the fault is in thy own people.
Stubble is not given to your servants, and bricks they say to us: Make! And, behold, your servants are smitten, and [this thing brings] sin upon your people.
He said, “You are lazy, therefore you say, ‘Let us go sacrifice to Adonoy.’
But he said, You are idle, you are idle: therefore you say, Let us go and do sacrifice to the Lord.
And he said: You are idlers, idlers! That is why you say: Let us go and sacrifice to the L-rd.
Now go, get to work. You will not be given straw, and you must deliver your quota of bricks.”
Go therefore now, and work; for no straw shall be given you, yet shall you deliver the quantity of bricks.
And now, go and work. And stubble will not be given to you, and produce the quota of bricks!
The officers of the B’nei Yisrael realized their bad position, saying, “You must not reduce your daily quota of bricks.”
And the officers of the children of Yisra᾽el saw that they were in evil case, after it was said, You shall not in any way reduce your bricks or your daily task.
And the officers of the children of Israel saw them [their fellow Jews who were under them] in misfortune, [the officers being constrained] to say: Do not diminish from your bricks the quota of each day in its day.
They met Moshe and Aharon who were waiting to meet them as they were leaving Pharaoh.
And they met Moshe and Aharon, who stood in the way, as they came out from Par῾o.
And they [(men of Israel)] met Moses and Aaron standing opposite them when they left Pharaoh.
They said to them [Moshe and Aharon], “Let Adonoy look at you and judge. You have made our aroma abhorrent in the eyes of Pharaoh and in the eyes of his servants, putting a sword in their hands to kill us.”
And they said to them, The Lord look upon you, and judge; because you have made us abhorrent in the eyes of Par῾o, and in the eyes of his servants, to put a sword in their hand to slay us.
And they said to them: May the L-rd reveal Himself to you and judge how you have made us contemptible in the eyes of Pharaoh and in the eyes of his servants to put a sword in their hands to kill us!
Moshe returned to Adonoy and said, “My Master. Why have You brought harm to this people? Why did You send me?
And Moshe returned to the Lord, and said, Lord, why hast thou dealt ill with this people? why is it that thou hast sent me?
And Moses returned to the L-rd and he said: O L-rd, why have You done evil to this people [and] why have You sent me!
Ever since I came to Pharaoh to speak in Your Name, he has done harm to this people; and You have not rescued Your people.”
for since I came to Par῾o to speak in thy name, he has done evil to this people; neither hast thou delivered thy people at all.
And from the time I came to Pharaoh to speak in Your name, he has done [increasingly greater] evil to this people, and You have not saved Your people.
