When Avram was ninety-nine years old, Adonoy appeared [became revealed] to Avram and said to him: I am Almighty Shaddai, walk [worship] before Me and be perfect.
And when Avram was ninety nine years old, the Lord appeared to Avram, and said to him, I am the Almighty God; walk before Me, and be perfect.
And Avram was ninety-nine years old, and the L-rd appeared to Avram and He said to him: I am the All-Sufficient G-d. [Therefore,] walk before Me [i.e., worship Me] and be whole [in the trials I shall set for you, and I shall be your Patron].
I will give My covenant between Me [My Word] and you, and I will multiply you[r descendants] exceedingly.
And I will make My covenant between Me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly.
And I shall set My covenant [of love and of inheritance of the land (through the mitzvah of circumcision)] between Me and you, and I will increase you exceedingly.
Avram fell on his face. Elohim spoke with him, saying:
And Avram fell on his face: and God talked with him, saying,
And Avram fell upon his face [in awe, lacking the power to stand in the presence of the Shechinah while yet uncircumcised]. And the L-rd spoke to him, saying:
As for Me, here is My covenant with you; you shall be the father of a multitude of nations.
As for Me, behold, My covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations.
I, behold, My covenant is with you, and you shall be the father of a multitude of nations.
No longer shall your name be called Avram, but your name shall be Avraham, for the father of a multitude of nations I have appointed you.
Neither shall thy name any more be called Avram, but thy name shall be Avraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee.
And your name will no longer be called Avram, but your name will be Avraham, for a father of a multitude (av hamon) of nations have I made you [("Av (ra) ham," acronymically = av hamon)]
I will make you exceedingly fruitful and I will make you into nations [assemblies]; and kings [who rule over nations] will descend from you.
And I will make thee exceedingly fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee.
And I shall multiply you exceedingly, and I shall make of you nations [Israel and Edom, (Ishmael already having been born)], and kings will go forth from you.
I will sustain My covenant between Me [My Word] and you, and between your descendants after you throughout their generations as an eternal covenant, to be a God to you, and to your descendants after you.
And I will establish My covenant between Me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God to thee, and to thy seed after thee.
And I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your seed after you throughout their generations as an eternal covenant, [My covenant being] to be a G-d unto you and unto your seed after you.
I will give to you, and to your descendants after you, the land of your temporary residence, all the land of Canaan as an eternal possession, and I will be a God to them.
And I will give to thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land in which thou dost sojourn, all the land of Kena῾an, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.
And I will give unto you and unto your seed after you the land of your sojournings, the whole land of Canaan, as an eternal holding, and [there] I will be a G-d unto them [(but if one lives elsewhere, it is "as if he has no G-d")].
Elohim said to Avraham: And as for you, you must preserve My covenant, you and your descendants after you throughout their generations.
And God said to Avraham, Thou shalt keep My covenant therefore, thou, and thy seed after thee in their generations.
And G-d said to Abraham: And, [as for] you, My covenant shall you keep, you and your seed after you throughout your generations.
This is My covenant which you must preserve between Me [My Word] and you, and your descendants after you: every male among you shall be circumcised.
This is My covenant, which you shall keep, between Me and you and thy seed after thee; Every manchild among you shall be circumcised.
[And what constitutes its "keeping"?] This is My covenant which you shall keep between Me and you [those living now] and your seed after you, [those yet to be born] — that all of your males be circumcised.
You shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin. This shall be the sign of the covenant between Me [My Word] and you.
And you shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token of the covenant between Me and you.
And you shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskins, and it shall be for a sign of the covenant between Me and you.
At the age of eight days every male among you must be circumcised, throughout your generations; he that is a house-born [slave] or one that was bought with money from any stranger who is not your descendant.
And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every manchild in your generations, he that is born in the house, or bought with money of any stranger, who is not of thy seed.
And at eight days old, every male of yours throughout your generations shall be circumcised, (whether) born at home [of your maidservant] or bought for money [after he was born] of any stranger who is not of your seed.
Your house-born slaves must be circumcised, and also those bought with your money. This shall be My covenant in your flesh as an eternal covenant.
He that is born in thy house, and he that is bought with thy money, must needs be circumcised: and My covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant.
Circumcised, he shall be circumcised, [in any event, even (in certain cases) after eight days], one born in your house and one bought for your money, and My covenant shall be in your flesh as an everlasting covenant.
וְעָרֵ֣ל**׀** זָכָ֗ר אֲשֶׁ֤ר לֹֽא־יִמּוֹל֙ אֶת־בְּשַׂ֣ר עׇרְלָת֔וֹ וְנִכְרְתָ֛ה הַנֶּ֥פֶשׁ הַהִ֖וא מֵעַמֶּ֑יהָ אֶת־בְּרִיתִ֖י הֵפַֽר׃{ס}
An uncircumcised male, who will not circumcise his foreskin, that soul [man] shall be cut off from its people; he has broken [changed] My covenant.
And the uncircumcised manchild the flesh of whose foreskin is not circumcised, that soul shall be cut off from his people; he has broken My covenant.
And an uncircumcised male [(the locus of circumcision being the "maleness" locus)], who does not circumcise the flesh of his foreskin [upon reaching the age of liability] — that soul shall be cut off from its people, [going childless and dying before his time. (But if his father is remiss in circumcising him, he is in transgression of a positive commandment, but does not incur "cutting off")]; My covenant has he broken.
And Elohim said to Avraham [As for] Sarai your wife, do not call her by the name Sarai, for Sarah is her name.
And God said to Avraham, As for Saray thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Saray, but Sara shall her name be.
And G-d said to Abraham: Sarai your wife — you shall not call her name Sarai ["my mistress"]; but her name is Sarah ["mistress (over all)"].
I will bless her, and I will also give you a son through her. I will bless her, and she will be [a mother] of nations [assemblies], kings of peoples [who rule over nations] will descend from her.
And I will bless her, and give thee a son also of her: and I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of peoples shall issue from her.
And I shall bless her, [rejuvenating her (18:12)], and I shall also give from her to you a son, and I shall bless her [with nursing breasts], and nations will issue from her; kings of peoples will come from her.
Avraham fell on his face and laughed [rejoiced]. He said in his heart: Can a hundred year old man have children? Shall Sarah, who is ninety years old give birth?
Then Avraham fell upon his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, Shall a child be born to him that is a hundred years old? and shall Sara, that is ninety years old, give birth?
And Abraham fell upon his face and he rejoiced. And he said in his heart: Would [anyone think that] a man of a hundred [would] beget! or that Sarah, a woman of ninety, would bear!
And Avraham said to [before] Elohim: May it be granted that Yishmael live before You.
And Avraham said to God, O that Yishma᾽el might live before thee!
And Abraham said to G-d: Would that Ishmael lived before You [i.e., worshipping You]!
Elohim said: Indeed, your wife Sarah will bear you a son, and you will name him Yitzchok. I will establish My covenant with him as an eternal covenant to his descendants after him.
And God said, Sara thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Yiżĥaq: and I will establish My covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him.
And G-d said: In truth, Sarah your wife shall bear a son unto you, and you shall call his name Yitzchak ["He shall laugh"], and I shall establish My covenant [of circumcision] with him, [and not with the sons of Ishmael and Keturah], an everlasting covenant, for his seed after him.
And as for Yishmael, I have heard you [I have accepted your prayer]. I have blessed him, and I will make him fruitful, and will increase him exceedingly. He will become the father of twelve princes, and I will make him into a great nation.
And as for Yishma᾽el I have heard thee: Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great nation.
And, as for Ishmael, I have heard you. Behold, I have blessed him and have made him fruitful, and have multiplied him exceedingly. Twelve princes (nesi'im) [also construable as "clouds" (which will vanish)] will he beget, and I shall make him a great nation.
But I will establish My covenant with Yitzchok, who Sarah will bear to you at this time next year.
But my covenant will I establish with Yiżĥaq, whom Sara shall bear to thee at this time next year.
And My covenant shall I establish with Isaac [(Isaac was "holy", i.e., circumcised, from birth)], whom Sarah will bear unto you at this time in the following year.
And when He finished speaking with him, [the Glory of] Elohim ascended from Avraham.
And He finished talking with him, and God went up from Avraham.
And He finished speaking with him, and G-d went up from Abraham, [(the righteous being the "chariot" of the L-rd)].
Avraham took his son, Yishmael, and all those that were born in his household, and all that he had bought with his money, every male member of Avraham’s household, and he circumcised the flesh of their foreskin on that very day as Elohim had said to him.
And Avraham took Yishma᾽el his son, and all that were born in his house, and all that were bought with his money, every male among the men of Avraham’s house; and circumcised the flesh of their foreskin in the selfsame day, as God had said to him.
And Abraham took Ishmael his son and all that were born in his house and all that were bought with his money, every male of the men of Abraham's household, and he circumcised the flesh of their foreskin. On this very same day, [in the daytime and not at night, (not fearing heathens or mockers, and (also) so that his foes and his contemporaries not say: Had we seen him, we would not have permitted him to do G-d's bidding)], as G-d had spoken to him.
Avraham was ninety-nine years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.
And Avraham was ninety nine years old, when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.
And Abraham was ninety-nine years old when the flesh of his foreskin was circumcised.
And his son Yishmael was thirteen years old when he circumcised the flesh of his foreskin.
And Yishma᾽el his son was thirteen years old, when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.
And Ishmael his son was thirteen years old when the flesh of his foreskin was circumcised.
On that very day Avraham and his son Yishmael were circumcised.
In the selfsame day was Avraham circumcised, and Yishma᾽el his son.
On this very same day, [when Abraham had completed his ninety-ninth year, and Ishmael, his thirteenth,] Abraham and Ishmael his son were circumcised.
וְכׇל־אַנְשֵׁ֤י בֵיתוֹ֙ יְלִ֣יד בָּ֔יִת וּמִקְנַת־כֶּ֖סֶף מֵאֵ֣ת בֶּן־נֵכָ֑ר נִמֹּ֖לוּ אִתּֽוֹ׃{פ}
All the men of his household, those born in his household, and bought with money from a stranger, were circumcised with him.
And all the men of his house, born in the house, and bought with money of a stranger, were circumcised with him.
And all the men of his house, born in the house or bought with money from a stranger, were circumcised with him.
