Adonoy remembered Sarah as He had said, and Adonoy did for Sarah as He had spoken.

And the Lord visited Sara as He had said, and the Lord did to Sara as He had spoken.

And the L-rd had visited Sarah [even before healing Avimelech, (one who prays for his neighbor — as Abraham did for Avimelech — being answered first)], as He had said [regarding conception (17:19)], and the L-rd did unto Sarah as He had spoken [to Abraham regarding the birth of an heir (15:1)].

She conceived and Sarah gave birth to Avraham’s son in his old age, at the designated time that Elohim had declared.

For Sara conceived, and bore Avraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him.

And Sarah conceived and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the appointed time of which G-d had spoken [18:4].

Avraham named his son that was born to him, to which Sarah had borne to him, Yitzchok.

And Avraham called the name of his son that was born to him, whom Sara bore to him, Yiżĥaq.

And Abraham called the name of the son who was born to him, whom Sarah bore unto him, Isaac.

Avraham circumcised his son, Yitzchok, when he was eight days old, as Elohim had commanded him.

And Avraham circumcised his son Yiżĥaq being eight days old, as God had commanded him.

And Abraham circumcised Isaac his son when he was eight days old, as G-d had commanded him.

Avraham was one hundred years old when his son Yitzchok was born to him.

And Avraham was a hundred years old, when his son Yiżĥaq was born to him.

And Abraham was a hundred years old when Isaac his son was born to him.

Sarah said, Elohim has given me laughter. All who hear will laugh with me.

And Sara said, God has made laughter for me, so that all that hear will laugh with me.

And Sarah said: G-d made rejoicing for me. All who hear will rejoice for me.

She said, Who said to Avraham, that Sarah would nurse children? For I have given birth to a son in his old age.

And she said, Who would have said to Avraham, that Sara should give children suck? for I have born him a son in his old age.

And she said: Who is it [(i.e., see how exalted He is)] who said [(milel, 100 in gematria) that in the hundredth year] of Abraham Sarah would suckle children [(the matrons bringing their children to her to be nursed)], for I have borne a son in his old age.

The child grew and was weaned. Avraham made a great feast on the day Yitzchok was weaned.

And the child grew, and was weaned: and Avraham made a great feast on the same day that Yiżĥaq was weaned.

And the child grew and he was weaned [after twenty-four months], and Abraham made a great feast [i.e., one attended by the great men of the generation] on the day that Isaac was weaned.

Sarah saw that the son of Hagar, the Egyptian, that she had born to Avraham, was mocking.

And Sara saw the son of Hagar the Miżrian, whom she had born to Avraham, mocking.

And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, disporting himself [with idolatry].

She said to Avraham, Drive out this slave-woman and her son, for the son of this slave-woman will not inherit with my son, with Yitzchok.

So she said to Avraham, Cast out this bondwoman and her son: for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, with Yiżĥaq.

And she said to Abraham: Drive out this maidservant and her son. For the son of this maidservant will not inherit with my son [(even if he were not Isaac)], with Isaac [(even if he were not my son)].

This thing was very wrong in the eyes of Avraham, on account of his son.

And the thing was very grievous in Avraham’s eyes because of his son.

And the thing was very bad in the eyes of Abraham because of [being asked to drive out] his son.

Elohim said to Avraham, Do not consider this wrong in your eyes on account of the boy and your slave-woman. Regarding all that Sarah tells you, listen to her voice, for [only] through Yitzchok will seed be considered yours.

And God said to Avraham, Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad, and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sara has said to thee, hearken to her voice; for in Yiżĥaq shall thy seed be called.

And G-d said to Abraham: Let it not be bad in your eyes because of the youth and because of your maidservant. Whatever Sarah says to you, hearken to her [(whence we derive that Abraham was secondary to Sarah in prophecy)]; for in Isaac will there be called seed unto you.

[But] also the son of the slave-woman I will make into a nation, for he is [of] your seed.

And also of the son of the bondwoman will I make a nation, because he is thy seed.

And also the son of the maidservant I shall make a nation of him, for he is your seed.

Avraham got up early in the morning. He took bread and a skin [pouch] of water, and gave it to Hagar. He placed it on her shoulder with the lad, and sent her away. She went and lost her way in the desert of Beer Sheva.

And Avraham rose up early in the morning, and took bread, and a bottle of water, and gave it to Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, and the child, and sent her away: and she departed, and wandered in the wilderness of Be᾽er-sheva.

And Abraham rose early in the morning and he took bread and a skin-vessel of water, [but not silver and gold, for he hated Ishmael for having become corrupt], and he gave it to Hagar, placing it on her shoulder, along with the child [(Sarah having cast an evil eye upon him, rendering him feverish and unable to walk)], and he sent her and she went; and she strayed [She returned to the idolatry of her father's house] in the desert of Beersheva.

The water in the skin was used up, and she threw the lad under one of the bushes.

And the water was spent in the bottle, and she cast the child under one of the shrubs.

And the water in the skin-vessel was finished and she cast the child under one of the growths.

She went and sat facing him, about [the distance] of bow-shots away. She said, Let me not see the lad die. She sat facing him and wept in a loud voice.

And she went, and sat her down over against him a good way off, as it were a bowshot: for she said, Let me not see the death of the child. And she sat over against him, and lifted up her voice, and wept.

And she went and she sat from afar, about two bow shots away. For she said: Let me not see the death of the child. And [when he was close to death], she sat down farther off, and she lifted up her voice and she cried.

Elohim heard the voice of the lad. An angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, What is the matter, Hagar? Do not fear. Elohim has heard the voice of the lad in the place where he is.

And God heard the voice of the lad; and the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven, and said to her, What ails thee, Hagar? fear not; for God has heard the voice of the lad where he is.

And G-d heard the voice of the youth [(whence it is derived that the sick one's plaint is sooner heard and answered than the prayer of others for him)], and an angel of G-d called to Hagar from heaven, and he said to her: What grieves you, Hagar? Do not fear. For G-d has heard the voice of the child in his present station. [For the ministering angels protested Ishmael's being saved from thirst when he was destined to cause Israel to die of thirst (see Isaiah 21:13-14), and G-d answered that he was being judged according to his present (guiltless) status].

Get up and lift up the lad. Keep your hand strong on him, for I will make him a great nation.

Arise, lift up the lad, and hold him in thy hand; for I will make him a great nation.

Arise, lift up the child and strengthen your hand in him, for I shall make him a great nation.

Elohim opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water. She went and filled the skin with water, and gave the lad to drink.

And God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water; and she went, and filled the bottle with water, and gave the lad drink.

And G-d opened her eyes and she beheld a well of water, and she went and filled up the skin-vessel with water, and she gave the youth to drink.

Elohim was with the lad and he grew up. He settled in the wilderness, [where] he became an expert archer.

And God was with the lad; and he grew, and dwelt in the wilderness, and became an archer.

And G-d was with the youth, and he grew up, and he dwelt in the desert and became a bowman.

He lived in the desert of Paran, and his mother took a wife for him from the land of Egypt.

And he dwelt in the wilderness of Paran: and his mother took him a wife out of the land of Miżrayim.

And he dwelt in the desert of Paran, and his mother took for him a wife from the land of Egypt [where she had been reared.]

It was at this time, Avimelech and Pichol, his general spoke to Avraham, saying, Elohim is with you in all that you do.

And it came to pass at that time, that Avimelekh and Pikhol captain of his host spoke to Avraham, saying, God is with thee in all that thou doest:

And it was at that time that Avimelech and Phichol, the captain of his host, [seeing that Abraham had escaped the destruction of the region of Sodom, that he had defeated the kings (section 14), and that his wife had borne a child to him in his old age] said to Abraham: G-d is with you in all that you do.

Now, swear to me here, by Elohim, that you will not deal falsely with me, with my son, or my grandson. The kindness that I have done to you, do to me and to the land in which you lived for a while.

now therefore swear to me here by God that thou wilt not deal falsely with me, nor with my son, nor with my son’s son: but according to the kindness that I have done to thee, thou shalt do to me, and to the land in which thou hast sojourned.

And, now, swear to me here by G-d that you will not deal falsely with me, or with my child, or with my grandchild, [(thus far, a man's compassion for his children)]. As the lovingkindness that I did with you [viz. (20:15): "Behold, my land is before you"] do with me and with the land in which you dwelt.

Avraham said, I will swear.

And Avraham said, I will swear.

And Abraham said: I shall swear.

Avraham then reprimanded Avimelech regarding the well of water that Avimelech’s servants had taken by force.

And Avraham reproved Avimelekh because of the well of water, which Avimelekh’s servants had violently taken away.

And Abraham contended with Avimelech over the well of water that the servants of Avimelech had stolen.

Avimelech said, I do not know who did this thing. You also never told me, and I also heard nothing of it until today.

And Avimelekh said, I know not who has done this thing: neither didst thou tell me, neither yet heard I of it, but today.

And Avimelech said: I do not know who did this thing, and you, too, did not tell me, and I, too, did not hear of it until today.

Avraham took sheep and cattle and gave them to Avimelech. The two of them made a covenant.

And Avraham took sheep and oxen, and gave them to Avimelekh; and both of them made a covenant.

And Abraham took sheep and kine and gave them to Avimelech and the two of them made a covenant.

Avraham set seven ewes apart by themselves.

And Avraham set seven ewe lambs of the flock by themselves.

And Abraham stood the seven ewe-lambs of the flock by themselves.

Avimelech said to Avraham. What is the reason for these seven ewes that you have set apart?

And Avimelekh said to Avraham, What mean these seven ewe lambs which thou hast set by themselves?

And Avimelech said to Abraham: What are these seven ewe-lambs which you have stood by themselves?

He [Avraham] said, Take these seven ewes from my hand so that it will be proof for me, that I dug this well.

And he said, For these seven ewe lambs shalt thou take of my hand, that they may be a witness to me, that I have dug this well.

And he said: For seven ewe-lambs shall you take from my hand, that this [the waters of the well miraculously rising to Abraham in "confirmation" of his ownership] be a testimony unto me that I have dug this well.

Therefore he called that place Beer Sheva, since the two had made an oath there.

Therefore he called that place Be᾽er-sheva; because there they swore both of them.

Therefore, he called that place Beersheva, for there they both swore (nishbe'u).

They made a covenant in Beer Sheva. Avimelech, and Pichol, his general, then rose and returned to the land of the Philistines.

Thus they made a covenant at Be᾽er-sheva; then Avimelekh rose up, and Pikhol the captain of his host, and they returned to the land of the Pelishtim.

And they made a covenant in Beersheva, and Avimelech arose, and Phichol, the captain of his host, and they returned to the land of the Philistines.

Avraham planted an eishel [tree] in Beer Sheva, and there he proclaimed the Name Adonoy, Almighty of the universe.

And Avraham planted a tamarisk in Be᾽er-sheva, and called there on the name of the Lord, the everlasting God.

And he planted a fruit grove in Beersheva, and he called there in the name of the L-rd, the G-d of the world. [As a result of that fruit grove the L-rd came to be called the G-d of the whole world, Abraham charging his guests to bless the Creator of the whole world, whose fruits they had eaten.]

Avraham lived in the land of the Philistines for many days.

And Avraham sojourned in the land of the Pelishtim many days.

And Abraham lived in the land of the Philistines many days [(twenty-six years, one year more than he had lived in Chevron)].
