After these events, Elohim tested Avraham and said to him, Avraham! and he [Avraham] said, Here I am.

And it came to pass after these things, that God did test Avraham, and said to him, Avraham: and he said, Here I am!

And it was, after these things, that G-d proved Abraham. He said to him: "Abraham," and he said: "Here I am" [ready to do Your bidding].

He said, Please take your son, your only one, who you love—Yitzchok—and go to the land of Moriah. Sacrifice him as a burnt-offering on one of the mountains which I will designate to you.

And He said, Take now thy son, thy only son Yiżĥaq, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriyya; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.

And He said: Take, I pray you, [(Stand firm for Me in this trial)] your son [(Abraham: I have two sons)], your only one [(Abraham: Each is the only one of his mother)], whom you love [(Abraham: I love them both)] — Isaac [(All this, so as not to overwhelm Abraham by springing the command upon him, and, also, to endear the mitzvah to him)], and go to the land of Moriah [Jerusalem], and bring him up there as a burnt-offering on one of the mountains that I shall indicate to you.

Avraham awoke early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took his two assistants with him, and also his son, Yitzchok. He split the wood of the burnt-offering, rose, and went to the place that Elohim had designated to him.

And Avraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Yiżĥaq his son, and broke up the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went to the place of which God had told him.

And Abraham arose early in the morning [in haste to perform the mitzvah], and he [himself] saddled his ass, and he took his two youths [Ishmael and Eliezer] with him, and Isaac his son; and he split wood for the burnt-offering, and he arose, and he went to the place which G-d had designated to him.

On the third day, Avraham raised his eyes and saw the place from afar.

Then on the third day Avraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off.

On the third day, [(Abraham not being shown the place immediately so that it not be said that he was "stunned" into the sacrifice and that if he had had time to deliberate he would not have undertaken it)], Abraham lifted his eyes, and he saw the place from afar, [a cloud hovering over the mountain.]

Avraham said to his assistants, Remain here with the donkey and I and the lad will go to that place. We will prostrate ourselves [in worship] and return to you.

And Avraham said to his young men, stay here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and prostrate ourselves, and come again to you.

And Abraham said to his youths: Abide here with the ass and I and the youth will go [a little way off] to this [place before us], and we will prostrate ourselves and we will return to you [(Abraham prophesying that they would return)].

Avraham took the wood of the burnt-offering and placed it on his son Yitzchok. In his hand he took the fire and the knife, and they both went together.

And Avraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Yiżĥaq his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and the knife; and they went both of them together.

And Abraham took the wood for the burnt-offering and placed it upon Isaac his son. And he took in his hand the kindling and the knife, and both went together [i.e., in the same spirit — Abraham, who knew, as happy as Isaac, who did not know].

Yitzchok spoke to Avraham, his father, and said, Father, and he [Avraham] said, Here I am, my son. He said, Here are the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for the burnt-offering?

And Yiżĥaq spoke to Avraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here I am, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?

And Isaac said to Abraham his father: And he said: "My father." And he said: "Here I am, my son." And he said: "Here are the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for the burnt-offering?"

Avraham said, Elohim will show the lamb for a burnt-offering, my son. And the two of them went together.

And Avraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.

And Abraham said: G-d will see to the lamb for the burnt-offering, [and if there is no lamb, then it will be] my son. And both went together [in the same spirit of happiness — even Isaac, who now knew that he was going to be slaughtered.]

They came to the place that Elohim had designated to him. Avraham built the altar there, and arranged the wood. He bound his son Yitzchok, and placed him on the altar, on top of the wood.

And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Avraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Yiżĥaq his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood.

And they came to the place which G-d had indicated to him. And Abraham built the altar there and he arranged the wood. And he bound Isaac his son, [hands and feet tied behind him], and he placed him on the altar upon the wood.

Avraham extended his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son.

And Avraham stretched out his hand, and took the knife to slay his son.

And Abraham sent forth his hand and he took the knife to slaughter his son.

An angel of Adonoy called to him from heaven and said, Avraham, Avraham! and he said, Here I am.

And an angel of the Lord called to him out of heaven, and said, Avraham, Avraham: and he said, Here I am.

And an angel of the L-rd called to him from heaven, saying: "Abraham, Abraham" [(the doubling connoting affection)]. And he said: "Here I am."

He [God] said, Do not touch the lad, nor do anything to [harm] him; for now I know that you are one who fears Elohim and have not withheld your son, your only one, from Me.

And he said, Lay not thy hand upon the lad, neither do anything to him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thy only son from me.

And He said: Do not stretch your hand forth to the youth, and do not do anything to him. For now I know [i.e., I can counter all objections to My election of you; for it is evident to all] that you are G-d-fearing, not having spared your only son from Me.

Avraham looked up and beheld a ram after it had been caught in the thicket by its horns. Avraham went and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt-offering instead of his son.

And Avraham lifted up his eyes, and looked and behold behind him a ram caught in the thicket by his horns: and Avraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in place of his son.

And Abraham lifted his eyes and he saw, and, behold, a ram afterwards, [i.e., after the angel had said to him: "Do not stretch, etc."] caught in the thicket by its horns. And Abraham went and he took the ram and brought it up as a burnt-offering in place of his son [i.e., For each sacrificial act, he prayed: "May it be Your will to reckon it as if it were done to my son."]

Avraham called the name of that place, Adonoy will see; as it is said [to] this day, On Adonoy’s mountain, He will be seen.

And Avraham called the name of that place Adonay-yir᾽e: as it is said to this day, In the mount the Lord will appear.

And Abraham called the name of that place "The L-rd will see" [i.e., He will choose for Himself that place for the reposing of His Shechinah and the sacrifice of offerings], of which [place] it will be said [in future generations]: "On this day in the mountain, the L-rd shall appear."

An angel of Adonoy called to Avraham, a second time, from heaven.

And the angel of the Lord called to Avraham out of heaven the second time,

And an angel of the L-rd called to Abraham a second time from heaven.

And said, I have sworn by Myself, declares Adonoy, that because you performed this deed, and did not withhold your only son.

and said, By myself have I sworn, says the Lord, because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thy only son:

And he said: I have sworn by My name, says the L-rd, that because you have done this thing and not spared your son, your only one,

I will greatly bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars of the sky and like the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will inherit the gate of their enemies.

that I will exceedingly bless thee, and I will exceedingly multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of its enemies;

that bless shall I bless you [(one blessing for the father, one for the son)] and multiply will I multiply your seed [(one for the father, one for the son)], as the stars of the heavens and the sand on the seashore, and your seed shall inherit the gate of his foes.

Through your children, will be blessed all the nations of the world, because you heeded My voice.

and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed My voice.

And there will bless themselves in your seed all the nations of the earth, because you have hearkened to My voice.

Avraham returned to his assistants, and they rose and went together to Beer Sheva. Avraham dwelt in Beer Sheva.

So Avraham returned to his young men, and they rose up and went together to Be᾽er-sheva; and Avraham dwelt at Be᾽er-sheva.

And Abraham returned to his youths and they arose and went together to Beersheva, and Abraham sojourned in Beersheva [(on the way to Chevron)].

After these words, it was told to Avraham, saying, Behold, Milkah has also born children to Nachor, your brother.

And it came to pass after these things, that it was told Avraham, saying, Behold Milka, she also has born children to thy brother Naĥor;

And it was after these things [(i.e., after Abraham's thoughts on the binding of Isaac, viz.: If he had been slaughtered, he would have died without children — I should have gotten him a wife)] that it was told to Abraham: Milkah, she, too, has borne sons to Nachor your brother [i.e., Her family, too, is similar to that of Abraham. Just as twelve tribes issued from Abraham by way of Jacob — eight from the principal wives and four from the concubines — here, too, there were eight sons from the principal wife and four from the concubine.]

Utz, his first born, Buz his brother, and Kemueil, the father of Aram.

῾Uż his firstborn, and Buz his brother, and Qemu᾽el the father of Aram,

Utz, his firstborn and Buz, his brother, and Kemuel, the father of Aram.

[Also] Kesed, Chazo, Pildash, Yidlaf and Besueil.

and Kesed, and Ḥazo, and Pildash, and Yidlaf, and Betu᾽el.

And Kessed and Chazzo and Pildash and Yidlaf and Bethuel.

Besueil fathered Rivkah. These eight, Milkah bore to Nachor, the brother of Avraham.

And Betu᾽el begot Rivqa: these eight did Milka bear to Naĥor, Avraham’s brother.

And Bethuel begot Rivkah [(The entire genealogy was recorded for the sake of this verse)]. These eight were borne by Milkah to Nachor the brother of Abraham.

His concubine was named Re’umah. She also gave birth to Tevach, Gacham, Tachash and Ma’achoh.

And his concubine, whose name was Re᾽uma, she bore also Tevaĥ, and Gaĥam, and Taĥash, and Ma῾akha.

And his concubine, whose name was Reumah, she, too, bore: Tevach and Gacham and Tachash and Ma'achah.
