There was a famine in the land, aside from the first famine that was in the days of Avraham. Yitzchok went to Avimelech, king of the Philistines, in Gerar.

And there was a famine in the land, beside the first famine that was in the days of Avraham. And Yiżĥaq went to Avimelekh, king of the Pelishtim to Gerar.

And there was a famine in the land, aside from the first famine in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went to Avimelech, king of the Philistines, to Gerar.

Adonoy appeared to him and said, Do not go down to Egypt. Settle in the land that I will make known to you.

And the Lord appeared to him, and said, Go not down into Miżrayim; dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of:

And the L rd appeared to him and said: Do not go down to Egypt, [for you are a "pure burnt-offering"]; dwell in the land that I shall indicate to you.

Stay temporarily in this land and I will be with you and bless you, for to you and your descendants I will give all these lands. I will [thus] keep the oath that I swore to Avraham, your father.

sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for to thee, and to thy seed, I will give all these countries and I will perform the oath which I swore to Avraham thy father;

Sojourn in this land, and I will be with you and I will bless you. For to you and to your seed will I give all of these lands. And I will fulfill the oath which I swore to Abraham your father.

I will make your descendants [as numerous] as the stars of the heavens, and I will give your descendants all these lands. Through your descendants shall be blessed all the nations of the world.

and I will multiply thy seed as the stars of heaven, and will give to thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed;

And I will multiply your seed as the stars of the heavens, and I will give to your seed all of these lands, and there will bless themselves in [the name of] your seed all the nations of the land.

[All this is] because Avraham listened to My voice, and minded My mandate, My commandments, My decrees and My teachings.

because Avraham obeyed My voice, and kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes, and My laws.

Because Abraham heeded My voice [when I tried him], and he kept My keeping [i.e., decrees for the safekeeping of the exhortations of the Torah], My mitzvoth [self-evident moral imperatives], My statutes [decrees inaccessible to reason], and My laws [(including the oral law)].

Yitzchok [thus] settled in Gerar.

And Yiżĥaq dwelt in Gerar:

And Isaac dwelt in Gerar.

The local men asked about his wife, and he said, She is my sister. He was afraid to say, [she is] my wife, lest the local men kill me for Rivkah, for she is so good looking.

and the men of the place asked him of his wife; and he said, She is my sister: for he feared to say, She is my wife; lest, said he, the men of the place should kill me on account of Rivqa; because she was fair to look upon.

And the men of the place asked about his wife, and he said: "She is my sister." For he feared to say: "She is my wife," lest the men of the place kill me because of Rivkah, for she is very fair.

Once, after [Yitzchok] had been there a long while, Avimelech, king of the Philistines, looked at the window, and he saw, and behold, Yitzchok was amusing himself with Rivkah, his wife.

And it came to pass, when he had been there a long time, that Avimelekh king of the Pelishtim looked out at a window, and saw, and behold, Yiżĥaq was sporting with Rivqa his wife.

And it was, when the days were grown long for him there, [Isaac thinking that Rivkah was no longer in danger and relaxing his vigil], that Avimelech the king of the Philistines looked through the window, and behold, Isaac sporting [i.e., lying] with Rivkah his wife.

Avimelech called Yitzchok and he said, But she is your wife. How could you have said, She is my sister? Yitzchok said to him, Because I said, I might die because of her.

And Avimelekh called Yiżĥaq, and said, Behold, surely she is thy wife: and how didst thou say, She is my sister? And Yiżĥaq said to him, Because I said, Lest I die for her.

And Avimelech called to Isaac and he said: But she is surely your wife! How, then, did you tell me: "She is my sister"? And Isaac said to him: For I said: Lest I die because of her.

Avimelech said, What have you done to us? One of the people could have easily slept with your wife, and you would have brought guilt upon us.

And Avimelekh said, What is this thou hast done to us? one of the people might easily have lain with thy wife, and thou shouldst have brought guiltiness upon us.

And Avimelech said: What is this that you have done to us? The [distinctive] one of the people [i.e., the king] had almost lain with your wife, and, [had he done so], you would have brought guilt upon us.

Avimelech [then] commanded all his people, saying, Whoever touches this man or his wife, shall die.

And Avimelekh charged all his people, saying, He that touches this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.

And Avimelech commanded all the people, saying: Whoever touches this man or his wife shall be put to death.

Yitzchok planted in that land, and in that year he reaped a hundred fold, for Adonoy had blessed him.

Then Yiżĥaq sowed in that land, and received in the same year a hundredfold: for the Lord blessed him.

And Isaac sowed in that land [(though it was not so fertile as the land of the seven nations)], and he found in that year, [a difficult year], a hundredfold [more than the estimated yield]. And the L rd blessed him.

The man prospered. He continued to prosper until he became very great.

And the man grew great, and went forward, and grew until he became very great:

And the man grew (i.e., prospered), and he continued growing, until he had grown exceedingly.

He owned flocks of sheep, herds of cattle, and many slaves, and the Philistines were jealous of him.

for he had possessions of flocks, and possessions of herds, and a great store of servants: and the Pelishtim envied him.

And he had flocks of sheep and herds of cattle and much labor, and the Philistines envied him.

All the wells that his father’s servants had dug in the days of his father, Avraham—the Philistines plugged them, and filled them with earth.

For all the wells which his father’s servants had dug in the days of Avraham his father, the Pelishtim had stopped them up, and filled them with earth.

And all of the wells that the servants of his father had dug in the days of Abraham, his father, were stopped up by the Philistines [(as abetting invading armies)], and they filled them up with sand.

Avimelech said to Yitzchok, Go away from us. You have become much more powerful than us.

And Avimelekh said to Yiżĥaq, Go from us; for thou art much mightier than we.

And Avimelech said to Isaac: Go away from us, for you have grown much stronger than we.

Yitzchok went away from there. He camped in the valley of Gerar and settled there.

And Yiżĥaq departed from there, and pitched in the valley of Gerar, and dwelt there.

And Isaac went thence, and he camped in the valley of Gerar, and he dwelt there.

Yitzchok returned and excavated the wells of water which were dug in the days of his father, Avraham, and were plugged by the Philistines after Avraham’s death. He gave them the same names that his father had given them.

And Yiżĥaq dug again the wells of water, which they had dug in the days of Avraham his father; for the Pelishtim had stopped them up after the death of Avraham: and he called their names after the names by which his father had called them.

And Isaac returned [(before he left Gerar)] and dug the wells of water which they had dug in the days of Abraham his father and which the Philistines had stopped up after the death of Abraham. And he called them by the names by which his father had called them.

Yitzchok’s servants dug in the valley and found there a well of spring water.

And Yiżĥaq’s servants dug in the valley, and found there a well of springing water.

And the servants of Isaac dug in the valley, and they found there a well of living waters.

The shepherds of Gerar argued with the shepherds of Yitzchok, saying, the water is ours. He named the well Eisek [Quarrel], because they had quarreled with him.

And the herdmen of Gerar did strive with Yiżĥaq’s herdmen, saying, The water is ours: and he called the name of the well ῾Eseq; because they strove with him.

And the shepherds of Gerar quarreled with the shepherds of Isaac, saying: "The water is ours!" And he called the name of the well Esek ("contention"), for they contended with him [over it].

They dug another well and they also argued about it. He named the well Sitnah [Obstruction].

And they dug another well, and strove for that also: and he called the name of it Sitna.

And they dug another well, and they quarreled over it, too, and they called its name Sitnah ("constraint").

He moved away from there and he dug another well, and there was no argument over it. He named it Rechovos [Wide Spaces], and said, For now Adonoy has made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.

And he removed from there, and dug another well; and for that they strove not: and he called the name of it Reĥovot; and he said, For now the Lord has made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.

And he traveled from there, and he dug another well, and they did not quarrel over it; and he called its name Rechovoth ("widening"), saying: For now the L rd has "widened" (things) for us, and we will be fruitful in the land.

From there he went to Beer Sheva.

And he went up from there to Be᾽er-sheva.

And he went up from there to Beersheva.

Adonoy appeared to him that night and said, I am the God of your father, Avraham. Do not fear for I am with you. I will bless you and make your descendants numerous, because of My servant, Avraham.

And the Lord appeared to him the same night, and said, I am the God of Avraham thy father: fear not, for I am with thee, and will bless thee, and multiply thy seed for My servant Avraham’s sake.

And the L rd appeared to him that night, and He said: I am the G d of Abraham your father. Do not fear, for I am with you. And I shall bless you and I shall multiply your seed for the sake of Abraham, My servant.

He [Yitzchok] built an altar there, and proclaimed the Name of Adonoy. He set up his tent there, and Yitzchok’s servants dug a well there.

And he built an altar there, and called upon the name of the Lord, and pitched his tent there: and there Yiżĥaq’s servants dug a well.

And he built an altar there, and he called in the name of the L rd. And he pitched his tent there, and the servants of Isaac dug a well there.

Avimelech came to Yitzchok from Gerar along with a group of friends and Pichol, his general.

Then Avimelekh went to him from Gerar, and Aĥuzzat his friend, and Pikhol the captain of his army.

And Avimelech went to him from Gerar and a company of his friends and Phichol the captain of his host.

Yitzchok said to them, Why have you come to me? You hate me and drove me away from you.

And Yiżĥaq said to them, Why do you come to me, seeing you hate me, and have sent me away from you?

And Isaac said to them: Why have you come to me when you hate me and you sent me away from you?

They said, We have indeed seen that Adonoy is with you, and we said, Let there now be an oath between us, between ourselves and you, and let us make a covenant with you;

And they said, We saw indeed that the Lord was with thee: and we said, Let there be now an oath between us, between us and thee, and let us make a covenant with thee;

And they said: We saw [in you as] we saw [in your father] that the L rd was with you. And we said: Let the oath that was between us [from the days of your father, also] be between us and you, and let us make a covenant with you.

that you will do us no harm, just as we did not touch you. We did nothing but good to you, and sent you away in peace. You are now the blessed one of Adonoy.

that thou wilt do us no hurt, as we have not touched thee, and as we have done to thee nothing but good, and have sent thee away in peace: thou art now the blessed of the Lord.

That you do not evil to us just as we did not touch you and just as we did with you only good and we sent you away in peace. You [too, do] now [likewise unto us], O blessed of the L rd.

He [Yitzchok] made a feast for them, and they ate and drank.

And he made them a feast, and they did eat and drink.

And he made a feast for them, and they ate and drank.

They got up early in the morning, and they each swore to the other. Yitzchok sent them away and they left in peace.

And they rose up early in the morning, and swore one to another: and Yiżĥaq sent them away, and they departed from him in peace.

On that day Yitzchok’s servants came and told him about the well they had dug; and they said to him, We have found water.

And it came to pass the same day, that Yiżĥaq’s servants came, and told him concerning the well which they had dug, and said to him, We have found water.

And it was on that day that the servants of Isaac came and told him about the well they had dug; and they said to him: We have found water.

He named it Shiva. Therefore the city is called Beer Sheva until this very day.

And he called it Shiv῾a: therefore the name of the city is Be᾽er-sheva to this day.

And he called it Shivah ("covenanting"). Therefore, the name of the city is Beersheva ("the well of the covenant") until this day.

Eisov was forty years old and he married Yehudis, the daughter of Be’eri, the Chittite and Bosmas, the daughter of Eylon the Chittite.

And ῾Esav was forty years old when he took to wife Yehudit the daughter of Be᾽eri the Ḥittite, and Basemat the daughter of Elon the Ḥittite:

And when Esau was forty years, he took as a wife Yehudith, the daughter of Be'eri the Hittite, and Basmath, the daughter of Eilon the Hittite.

They were rebellious of spirit to Yitzchok and Rivkah.

and they were a grief of mind to Yiżĥaq and to Rivqa.

And they were a vexation of spirit to Isaac and to Rivkah [in that they served idolatry].
