And when Yitzchok grew old his eyesight faded and he could not see. He called Eisov, his elder son, and said to him, My son. [Eisov] said to him, Here I am.

And it came to pass, that when Yiżĥaq was old, and his eyes were dim, so that he could not see, he called ῾Esav his eldest son, and said to him, My son: and he said to him, Here I am.

And it was, when Isaac became old, that his eyes grew dulled from seeing. And he called to Esau, his elder son, saying to him: "My son." And he said to him: "Here I am."

[Yitzchok] said, Behold, if you please, I am old. I do not know the day of my death.

And he said, Behold now, I am old, I know not the day of my death:

And he said: Behold, I have become old; I do not know the day of my death.

Now [therefore] please take your equipment, your sword and your bow, and go out to the field and trap [deer] for me.

now therefore take, I pray thee, thy weapons, thy quiver and thy bow, and go out to the field, and catch me some venison;

And now, take [(also connoting "sharpen")] I pray you, your knives [for shechitah (ritual slaughter)], your sword and your bow, and go out into the field, and hunt me a hunting, [and not theft].

Make it into a tasty dish for me, the way I like it, and bring it to me that I may eat, so that my soul will bless you before I die.

and make me savoury food, such as I love, and bring it to me, that I may eat, that my soul may bless thee before I die.

And make me the kind of tasty dish that I like, and bring it to me and I shall eat it, so that my soul bless you before I die.

Rivkah had [over]heard what Yitzchok said to his son, Eisov. Eisov went out to the field to trap [deer] to bring it [home.]

And Rivqa heard when Yiżĥaq spoke to ῾Esav his son. And ῾Esav went to the field to hunt for venison, and to bring it.

And Rivkah heard when Isaac spoke to Esau his son, and Esau went to the field to hunt a hunting to bring [by theft, if "hunting" were not available].

Rivkah said to her son Yaakov, saying, Behold, I heard your father speaking to your brother Eisov, saying,

And Rivqa spoke to Ya῾aqov her son, saying, Behold, I heard thy father speak to ῾Esav thy brother, saying,

And Rivkah said to Jacob her son: Behold, I have overheard your father saying to your brother Esau:

Bring back [deer] for me and make it into a tasty dish for me and I will eat. I will then bless you in the presence of Adonoy before I die.

Bring me venison, and make me savoury food, that I may eat, and bless thee before the Lord before my death.

Bring me a hunting and make me savory food, and I shall eat, and I shall bless you before the L rd [i.e., by His leave] before my death.

Now my son, listen to me, concerning that which I command you.

Now therefore, my son, obey my voice according to that which I command thee.

And now, my son, hearken to my voice, to what I command you.

Go, please, to the sheep and take for me from there two choice young goats, and I will make [from] them a tasty dish for your father as he likes.

Go now to the flock, and fetch me from there two good kids of the goats; and I will make them into savoury food for thy father, such as he loves:

Go, now, to the flock, and take for me [(from what is mine)] from there two good goat kids, [one for a paschal offering, and one for a savory dish], and I shall make of them for your father the kind of tasty dish that he likes [(kid, tasting like venison)].

You will [then] bring it to your father to eat, in order that he will bless you before he dies.

and thou shalt bring it to thy father, that he may eat, and that he may bless thee before his death.

And bring it to your father and have him eat, so that he bless you before his death.

Yaakov said to Rivkah, his mother, Behold, Eisov, my brother is a hairy person and I am a smooth-skinned person.

And Ya῾aqov said to Rivqa his mother, Behold, ῾Esav my brother is a hairy man, and I am a smooth man:

And Jacob said to Rivkah, his mother: But Esau my brother is hairy and I am smooth-skinned.

Suppose my father touches me. I will be in his eyes as an impostor. I will bring upon myself a curse—not a blessing.

my father perhaps will feel me, and I shall seem to him a deceiver; and I shall bring a curse upon me, and not a blessing.

Perchance my father will feel me and I shall be in his eyes as a deceiver, and I will bring upon myself a curse and not a blessing!

His mother said to him, Your curse shall be upon me, my son; but listen to me. Go bring them to me.

And his mother said to him, Upon me be thy curse, my son: only obey my voice, and go fetch me them.

And his mother said to him: Your curse upon me, my son; only hear my voice and go take (them) for me.

He went, took [them], and brought [them] to his mother. His mother made a tasty dish as his father liked.

And he went, and fetched, and brought them to his mother: and his mother made savoury food, such as his father loved.

And he went and took (them) and brought (them) to his mother. And his mother made the kind of tasty dish that his father liked.

Rivkah took the garments of Eisov, her elder son, [the garments] that were precious [to him] that were in her keeping in the house, and put them on Yaakov, her younger son.

And Rivqa took the best clothes of her eldest son ῾Esav, which were with her in the house, and put them upon Ya῾aqov her younger son:

And Rivkah took the clean garments of Esau, her elder son, which were with her [for safe-keeping] in the house, and she clothed Jacob her younger son with them.

The skins of the young goats she placed on his hands and the smooth part of his neck.

and she put the skins of the kids of the goats upon his hands, and upon the smooth of his neck:

And the skins of the goat-kids she placed upon his hands and the smooth of his neck.

She placed the tasty dish and the bread which she had made, in the hand of Yaakov, her son.

and she gave the savoury food and the bread, which she had prepared, into the hand of her son Ya῾aqov.

And she placed the tasty dish and the bread that she had made in the hand of her son Jacob.

He came to his father and said, My father. [Yitzchok] said, Here I am. Who are you my son?

And he came to his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I: who art thou, my son?

And he brought (it) to his father, and he said: "My father." And he said: "I am here. Who are you, my son?"

Yaakov said to his father, It is I, Eisov your firstborn. I have done as you told me. Rise, if you please, sit up and eat of my trapping so that your soul will bless me.

And Ya῾aqov said to his father, I am ῾Esav thy firstborn; I have done according as thou didst tell me: arise, I pray thee, sit and eat of my venison, that thy soul may bless me.

And Jacob said to his father: I am [(the one bringing food to you, and)] Esau [is] your first-born. I have done [(many things)] as you have spoken to me. Arise, I pray you, and sit [at table] and eat of my hunting so that your soul bless me.

Yitzchok said to his son, How is it that you found it so quickly my son? He [Yaakov] said, Because Adonoy, your God, brought it about for me.

And Yiżĥaq said to his son, How is it that thou hast found it so quickly, my son? And he said, Because, the Lord thy God sent me good speed.

And Isaac said to his son: How did you find (it) so quickly, my son? And he said: For the L rd your G d put it in my way.

Yitzchok said to Yaakov, Come close, if you please, and let me touch you, my son. Are you my son Eisov or not?

And Yiżĥaq said to Ya῾aqov, Come near, I pray thee, that I may feel thee, my son, whether thou art really my son ῾Esav or not.

And Isaac said to Jacob: Come near and let me feel you, my son, [(Isaac having been surprised at the reply, atypical of Esau)]. Are you my son Esau or not?

Yaakov came close to Yitzchok, his father, and he [Yitzchok] touched him. He said, The voice is the voice of Yaakov, but the hands are the hands of Eisov.

And Ya῾aqov went near to Yiżĥaq his father; and he felt him, and said, The voice is Ya῾aqov’s voice, but the hands are the hands of ῾Esav.

And Jacob drew near to Isaac his father, and he felt him, and he said: The voice [i.e., the tone, e.g., "Arise, I pray you"] is the voice of Jacob [(as opposed to Esau's brusque "Let my father arise")], but the hands are the hands of Esau.

He [Yitzchok] did not recognize him because his hands were like those of Eisov, his brother—they were hairy—and [thus] he blessed him.

And he recognised him not, because his hands were hairy, as his brother ῾Esav’s hands: so he blessed him.

And he did not recognize him, for his hands were like the hands of Esau his brother, hairy, and he blessed him.

He said, Are you indeed my son, Eisov? [Yaakov] said, I am.

And he said, Art thou really my son ῾Esav? And he said, I am.

And he said: Are you this, my son Esau? And he said: "I" [(but not: "I am Esau.")]

He said, Bring it close to me and I will eat from my son’s trappings, so that my soul will bless you. He brought it close to him and he ate. He [then] brought him wine and he drank.

And he said, Bring it near to me, and I will eat of my son’s venison, that my soul may bless thee. And he brought it near to him, and he did eat: and he brought him wine, and he drank.

And he said: Reach (it) to me, and I will eat of the hunting of my son, so that my soul bless you. And he reached (it) to him, and he ate, and he brought him wine and he drank.

His father Yitzchok said to him, Come close to me and kiss me, my son.

And his father Yiżĥaq said to him, Come near now, and kiss me, my son.

And Isaac his father said to him: Draw near, now, and kiss me, my son.

He came close and kissed him. He [Yitzchok] smelled the fragrance of his garments, and he blessed him. He said, See, my son’s fragrance is like the fragrance of a field blessed by Adonoy.

And he came near, and kissed him: and he smelt the smell of his garments, and blessed him, and said, See, the smell of my son is like the smell of a field which the Lord has blessed:

And he drew near and he kissed him and he smelled the smell of his garments [into which the fragrance of Eden had entered], and he blessed him. And he said: See, the smell of my son is as that of a field [of apples] which the L rd has blessed.

And may God give you of the dew of heaven, and of the fatness [riches] of the land, and abundance of grain and wine.

therefore God give thee of the dew of heaven, and the fatness of the earth, and plenty of corn and wine:

And may G d give you [in addition to the fragrance of Eden] of the dew of the heavens and the fat of the earth, and an abundance of corn and wine.

Peoples will serve you and nations bow to you. Be master over your brothers, and your mother’s sons will bow to you. Those who curse you are cursed, and those who bless you are blessed.

let peoples serve thee, and nations bow down to thee: be lord over thy brethren, and let thy mother’s sons bow down to thee: cursed be those that curse thee, and blessed be those that bless thee.

Peoples will serve you, and nations will bow down to you. Be a master to your brothers, and your mother's sons will bow down to you. Your cursers will be cursed and your blessers will be blessed.

It was when Yitzchok had finished blessing Yaakov, and Yaakov had just left the presence of Yitzchok, his father, that Eisov came back from his trapping.

And it came to pass, as soon as Yiżĥaq had made an end of blessing Ya῾aqov, and Ya῾aqov was yet scarce gone out from the presence of Yiżĥaq his father, that ῾Esav his brother came in from his hunting.

And it was, when Isaac finished blessing Jacob — Jacob had just left the presence of Isaac his father, when Esau his brother came from his hunting.

He too made a tasty dish and brought it to his father. He said to his father, Let my father rise and eat of his son’s trapping, that your soul may bless me.

And he also had made savoury food, and brought it to his father, and said to his father, Let my father arise, and eat of his son’s venison, that thy soul may bless me.

And he, too, made a savory dish and brought it to his father. And he said to his father: Let my father arise and eat from the hunting of his son, so that your soul bless me.

Yitzchok, his father, said to him, Who are you? He said, I am your son, your firstborn, Eisov.

And Yiżĥaq his father said to him, Who art thou? And he said, I am thy son, thy firstborn ῾Esav.

And Isaac his father said to him: Who are you? And he said: I am your first-born son, Esau.

Yitzchok was seized with a powerful trembling; and said, Who, then, is he who trapped [deer] and brought it to me. I ate all of it before you came, and I blessed him. He shall be blessed.

And Yiżĥaq trembled very much, and said, Who then is he that has taken venison, and brought it me, and I have eaten of all before thou camest, and have blessed him? moreover, he shall be blessed.

And Isaac was greatly confounded, and he said: Who is it, then, that hunted a hunting and brought it to me and I ate all [the flavors that I desired] before you came, and I blessed him — and he will, indeed, be blessed.

When Eisov heard his father’s words, he wailed a most loud and bitter cry, and he said to his father, Bless me too, my father.

And when ῾Esav heard the words of his father, he cried with a great and exceedingly bitter cry, and said to his father, Bless me, me also, O my father.

When Esau heard the words of his father, he cried a great and bitter outcry, and he said to his father: Bless me also, my father!

[Yitzchok] said, Your brother came with cunning and he took your blessing.

And he said, Thy brother came with cunning and has taken away thy blessing.

And he said: Your brother came with subtlety and took your blessing.

[Eisov] said, Is he not rightly called Yaakov? He has deceived me twice; he took my birthright, and now he has taken my blessing. He said, Have you not saved a blessing for me?

And he said, Is not he rightly named Ya῾aqov? for he has supplanted me these two times: he took away my birthright; and, behold, now he has taken away my blessing. And he said, Hast thou not reserved a blessing for me?

And he said: "Is it for this that he was called 'Yaakov' ('following at the heels')? That he would overtake me (ya'akveini) these two times? He took my birthright, and, behold, now he has taken my blessing!" And he said: "Did you not keep back a blessing for me?"

Yitzchok replied and said to Eisov. Behold, I have made him your master, and all his brothers I have given him as slaves. I have sustained him with grain and wine. Where? What can I do for you, my son?

And Yiżĥaq answered and said to ῾Esav, Behold, I have made him thy lord, and all his brethren have I given to him for servants; and with corn and wine have I sustained him: and what shall I do now for thee, my son?

And Isaac answered and he said to Esau: I made him a master over you, and all of his brothers have I given to him as bondsmen [and "whatever a bondsman acquires is acquired by his master"], and with corn and wine have I buttressed him, and for you, then, what can I do, my son?

Eisov said to his father, Do you have only one blessing, my father? Bless me too, my father, and Eisov raised his voice and wept.

And ῾Esav said to his father, Hast thou but one blessing, my father? bless me, even me also, O my father.

And Esau said to his father: Do you have only one blessing, my father? Bless me, too, my father. And Esau raised his voice and wept.

Yitzchok, his father replied and said to him, Behold the fatness [richness] of the earth shall be your dwelling, and of the dew of heaven from above.

And ῾Esav raised his voice, and wept. And Yiżĥaq his father answered and said to him, Behold, thy dwelling shall be of the fatness of the earth, and of the dew of heaven from above;

And Isaac his father answered and he said to him: Behold, of the fats of the earth [Graeca Magna] will be your dwelling, and of the dew of the heavens from above.

You shall live by your sword, and you shall serve your brother. When you have cause to be grieved, you will throw off his yoke from your neck.

and by thy sword shalt thou live, and thou shalt serve thy brother; and it shall come to pass when thou shalt have the dominion, that thou shalt break his yoke from off thy neck.

And by your sword will you live, and your brother will you serve. And it shall be when you [have just reason to] grieve [over the blessings' having been appropriated by Jacob (i.e., when Israel transgresses the Torah)], then you shall remove his yoke from your neck.

Eisov hated Yaakov because of the blessing with which his father blessed him, and Eisov said in his heart, The mourning days for my father are approaching. I will then kill my brother, Yaakov.

And ῾Esav hated Ya῾aqov because of the blessing with which his father blessed him: and ῾Esav said in his heart, When the days of mourning for my father are at hand; then will I slay my brother Ya῾aqov.

And Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing that his father had given him, and Esau said in his heart; Let the days of mourning for my father draw near, and I will [then] kill Jacob my brother [(and not before, so as not to aggrieve my father)].

Rivkah was informed about the words of Eisov, her older son, and she sent [a messenger] to call Yaakov, her younger son, and she said to him. Behold, your brother Eisov is consoled through you, [for he intends] to kill you.

And these words of ῾Esav, her elder son, were told to Rivqa: and she sent and called Ya῾aqov her younger son, and said to him, Behold, thy brother ῾Esav comforts himself, purposing to kill thee.

And it was told to Rivkah [through the holy spirit] the thoughts of Esau her elder son, and she sent and called to Jacob her younger son and said to him: Behold, Esau your brother is bethinking himself [of his brotherhood] to you, to kill you.

Now my son listen to me. Get up and flee to Lavan, my brother, to Charan.

Now therefore, my son, obey my voice; and arise, flee to Lavan my brother, to Ḥaran;

And now, my son, hearken to my voice. Arise, and run away to Lavan my brother in Charan.

Remain with him a short time until your brother’s fury has subsided.

and dwell with him a few days, until thy brother’s fury turn away;

And remain with him for some time, until your brother's fury is abated.

Until your brother’s rage toward you has subsided, and he has forgotten what you did to him. I will then send [for you] and bring you [back] from there. Why should I lose both of you on one day?

until thy brother’s anger turn away from thee, and he forget that which thou hast done to him: then I will send, and fetch thee from there: why should I be bereaved of you both in one day?

Until your brother's wrath turns from you and he forgets what you did to him, when I will send and take you from there. Why should I be bereft of both of you [(one killing, the other being killed in revenge)] in one day [(a presage of the future, Jacob and Esau being buried on the same day)] (See Sotah 13a).

Rivkah said to Yitzchok, I am disgusted with my life because of the daughters of Cheis. If Yaakov marries a woman of the daughters of Cheis, like these, from the daughters of the land, what is life [worth] to me.

And Rivqa said to Yiżĥaq, I am weary of my life because of the daughters of Ḥet: if Ya῾aqov take a wife of the daughters of Ḥet, such as these, of the daughters of the land, what good shall my life be to me?

And Rivkah said to Isaac: I have despised my life because of the daughters of Cheth. If Jacob takes a wife of the daughters of Cheth such as these of the daughters of the land, what is life to me?
