Yaakov [then] lifted his feet and went toward the land of the people of the East.

Then Ya῾aqov lifted up his feet, and went to the land of the people of the east.

And Jacob lifted his feet [on the "strength" of the glad tidings], and he went to the land of the children of the east.

He looked and [saw] a well in the field; and behold there were three flocks of sheep lying beside it, for from that well the flocks are watered. There was a large stone over the mouth of the well.

And he looked, and behold a well in the field, and, lo, there were three flocks of sheep lying by it; for out of that well they watered the flocks: and a great stone was upon the well’s mouth.

And he saw, and, behold, a well in the field, and, behold, three flocks of sheep resting near it; for from that well they [the shepherds] would water the flocks, and a great stone on the mouth of the well.

When all the flocks would gather, [the shepherds] would roll the stone from the well’s mouth, and water the sheep. They would [then] return the stone to its place over the mouth of the well.

And there were all the flocks gathered: and they rolled the stone from the well’s mouth, and watered the sheep, and put the stone back upon the well’s mouth in its place.

And all the flocks would gather there and they would roll the stone from the mouth of the well and water the sheep, and they would return the stone to its place on the mouth of the well.

Yaakov said to them, My brothers, from where do you come? They said, We are from Charan.

And Ya῾aqov said to them, My brethren, where are you from? And they said, Of Ḥaran are we.

And Jacob said to them: My brothers, whence do you come? And they said: We are from Charan.

He said to them, Do you know Lavan, the son of Nachor? They said, We know him.

And he said to them, Do you know Lavan the son of Naĥor? And they said, We know him.

And he said to them: Do you know Lavan the son of Nachor? And they said: We know.

He said to them, Is he doing well? They said, He is doing well. Behold Rochel, his daughter, is coming with the sheep.

And he said to them, Is he well? And they said, He is well: and, behold, Raĥel his daughter comes with the sheep.

And he said to them: Is he well? And they said: Well, and, behold, Rachel his daughter is coming with the sheep.

He said to them, The day is yet long, it is not yet time for the sheep to be gathered, water the sheep and go pasture them.

And he said, Lo, it is yet high day, neither is it time that the cattle should be gathered together: water the sheep, and go and feed them.

And he said: The day is yet long; it is not time to gather in the kine; water the sheep and go and graze.

They said, We cannot [do so] until all the flocks have gathered and [the shepherds] roll the stone from the mouth of the well. Then we can water the sheep.

And they said, We cannot, until all the flocks are gathered together, and till they roll the stone from the well’s mouth; then we may water the sheep.

And they said: We will not be able to do so until all the flocks are gathered and they [the shepherds] roll the stone from the mouth of the well and we water the sheep.

While he was still speaking with them, Rochel came with her father’s sheep, for she was a shepherdess.

And while he was still speaking with them, Raĥel came with her father’s sheep: for she kept them.

He was yet speaking with them when Rachel came with her father's sheep (for she was a shepherdess).

When Yaakov saw Rochel, the daughter of Lavan, his mother’s brother, with the sheep of Lavan, his mother’s brother, he stepped near and rolled the stone from the mouth of the well. He then watered the sheep of Lavan, his mother’s brother.

And it came to pass, when Ya῾aqov saw Raĥel the daughter of Lavan his mother’s brother, and the sheep of Lavan his mother’s brother, that Ya῾aqov went near, and rolled the stone from the well’s mouth, and watered the flock of Lavan his mother’s brother.

And it was, when Jacob saw Rachel, the daughter of Lavan, his mother's brother, and the sheep of Lavan, his mother's brother, that Jacob came forward and flipped the stone from the mouth of the well and watered the sheep of Lavan, his mother's brother.

Yaakov kissed Rochel and cried in a loud voice.

And Ya῾aqov kissed Raĥel, and raised his voice, and wept.

And Jacob kissed Rachel and he lifted up his voice and cried, [seeing prophetically that she would not be buried with him].

Yaakov told Rochel that he was a relative of her father, that he was the son of Rivkah. She ran and told her father.

And Ya῾aqov told Raĥel that he was her father’s brother, and that he was Rivqa’s son: and she ran and told her father.

And Jacob told Rachel that he was her father's kin and Rivkah's son, and she ran and told it to her father, [her mother having died].

When Lavan heard the news of Yaakov, his sister’s son, he ran to greet him. He embraced him and kissed him, and brought him to his house. [Yaakov] told Lavan all that had happened.

And it came to pass, when Lavan heard the tidings of Ya῾aqov his sister’s son, that he ran to meet him, and embraced him, and kissed him, and brought him to his house. And he told Lavan all these things.

And it was, when Lavan heard the talk of Jacob, his sister's son, that he ran towards him, and embraced him, and kissed him, and brought him to his house; and he told Lavan all of these things.

Lavan said to him, Nevertheless, you are my bone and flesh. [Yaakov] lived with him for a month.

And Lavan said to him, Surely thou art my bone and my flesh. And he stayed with him a month.

And Lavan said to him: But, [though you come empty-handed], you are my bone and flesh. And he stayed with him a month of days.

Lavan said to Yaakov, Just because you are my relative, must you work for me without pay? Tell me, [what should] your wages [be]?

And Lavan said to Ya῾aqov, Because thou art my brother, shouldst thou therefore serve me for nothing? tell me, what shall thy wages be?

And Lavan said to Jacob: Is it because you are my brother that you would serve me for nought? Tell me what your wage is.

Lavan had two daughters. The name of the older one was Leah, and the name of the younger one was Rochel.

And Lavan had two daughters: the name of the elder was Le᾽a, and the name of the younger was Raĥel.

And Lavan had two daughters: the name of the elder, Leah, and the name of the younger, Rachel.

The eyes of Leah were tender. Rochel was of beautiful form and of beautiful appearance.

And Le᾽a’s eyes were weak; but Raĥel was beautiful and well favoured.

And the eyes of Leah were soft, and Rachel was of beautiful [facial] form and of beautiful [facial] appearance.

Yaakov loved Rochel. and he said, I will work for you seven years for Rochel, your younger daughter.

And Ya῾aqov loved Raĥel; and said, I will serve thee seven years for Raĥel thy younger daughter.

And Jacob loved Rachel, and he said: I shall serve you seven years for Rachel, your younger daughter, [(Jacob making assurance doubly sure — and being deceived nonetheless)].

Lavan said, Better that I give her to you than I should give her to another man. [Remain] living with me.

And Lavan said, It is better that I give her to thee, than that I should give her to another man: stay with me.

And Lavan said: It is better for me to give her to you than to give her to another man; stay with me.

Yaakov worked seven years for Rochel, but they seemed to him like a few days, so much did he love her.

And Ya῾aqov served seven years for Raĥel and they seemed to him but a few days, for the love he had to her.

And Jacob served seven years for Rachel, and they were in his eyes like several days in his love for her.

Yaakov said to Lavan, Give me my wife, for my term is completed; and thus I will consummate the marriage with her.

And Ya῾aqov said to Lavan, Give me my wife, for my days are fulfilled, that I may go in to her.

And Jacob said to Lavan: Give me my wife, for my days have been completed, and let me come to her [and beget children (the twelve tribes)].

Lavan gathered all the local people and he made a [wedding] feast.

And Lavan gathered together all the men of the place, and made a feast.

And Lavan gathered all the men of the place and he made a feast.

When it was evening, he took Leah, his daughter, and brought her to him [Yaakov]. He consummated the marriage with her.

And it came to pass in the evening, that he took Le᾽a his daughter, and brought her to him; and he went in to her.

And it was in the evening that he took Leah his daughter and brought her to him, and he lived with her.

Lavan gave Zilpah, his servant to her, to Leah, his daughter as a handmaid.

And Lavan gave to his daughter Le᾽a Zilpa his maid for a handmaid.

And Lavan gave her Zilpah, his handmaid, to Leah his daughter, as a handmaid.

When it was morning, behold it was Leah! He [Yaakov] said to Lavan, What have you done to me? Did I not work with you for Rochel? Why did you deceive me?

And it came to pass, that in the morning, behold, it was Le᾽a: and he said to Lavan, What is this thou hast done to me? did not I serve with thee for Raĥel? why then hast thou beguiled me?

And it was in the morning, and, behold, it is Leah! [(Rachel having given to Leah the "identity signs" that Jacob had given her, so that Leah not be shamed)]. And he said to Lavan: What is this that you have done to me? Did I not serve with you for Rachel? Why have you deceived me!

Lavan said, It is not done so in our place, to give the younger [daughter in marriage] before the firstborn.

And Lavan said, It must not be so done in our country, to give the younger before the firstborn.

And Lavan said: It is not done thus in our place to give the younger daughter before the elder.

Complete the [marriage] week for this one. We will then give you the other also—in return for the work that you will do with me for another seven years.

Fulfil her week, and we will give thee this also for the service which thou shalt serve with me yet another seven years.

Fulfill the [festal] week of this one (Leah), and we will give you this one, too, [(after the festal week, Jacob's service beginning after the wedding)] for the service you will render me yet another seven years.

Yaakov did so, and he completed the [marriage] week for this one [Leah]. He [Lavan] then gave Rochel, his daughter to him as a wife.

And Ya῾aqov did so, and fulfilled her week: and he gave him Raĥel his daughter to wife also.

And Jacob did thus, and he fulfilled the week of that one, and he gave him Rachel his daughter as a wife.

To his daughter, Rochel, Lavan gave his servant Bilhah, to be her handmaid.

And Lavan gave to Raĥel his daughter Bilha his maid to be her handmaid.

And Lavan gave to Rachel his daughter, Bilhah his handmaid, to her as a handmaid.

He [Yaakov] also consummated his marriage with Rochel. He loved Rochel more than Leah, and he worked with [Lavan] additionally, another seven years.

And he went in also to Raĥel, and moreover he loved Raĥel more than Le᾽a, and served with him yet another seven years.

And he came also to Rachel, and he loved also Rachel more than Leah, and he served him yet another seven years, [as devotedly as the first].

Adonoy saw that Leah was the hated one, and He opened her womb. Rochel remained barren.

And when the Lord saw that Le᾽a was hated, He opened her womb: but Raĥel was barren.

And the L rd saw that Leah was hated, and He opened her womb; and Rachel was barren.

Leah conceived and gave birth to a son. She named him Reuvein, as she said, Adonoy has seen my affliction; for now my husband will love me.

And Le᾽a conceived, and bore a son, and she called his name Re᾽uven: for she said, Surely the Lord has looked upon my affliction; now therefore my husband will love me.

And Leah conceived and she bore a son, and she called his name Reuven, saying: For the L rd has seen (ra'ah Hashem) my affliction; for now my husband will love me.

She conceived again and gave birth to a son. She said, Since Adonoy heard that I am the hated one, He also gave me this one, and she named him Shimon.

And she conceived again, and bore a son; and said, Because the Lord has heard that I was hated, He has therefore given me this son also: and she called his name Shim῾on.

And she conceived again and she bore a son, and she said: For the L rd has heard (shama Hashem) that I am hated, and He has given me this one, too. And she called his name Shimon.

She conceived again and gave birth to a son. She said, This time my husband will become attached to me, for I have born him three sons. He therefore named him Leivi.

And she conceived again, and bore a son; and said, Now this time will my husband be joined to me, because I have born him three sons; therefore was his name called Levi.

And she conceived again and she bore a son, and she said: This time my husband will join himself (yilaveh) to me, for I have borne him three sons [my share of the twelve tribes (among his four wives)]. Therefore, he called his name Levi.

She conceived again and gave birth to a son. She said, This time I will praise Adonoy. She therefore named him Yehudah. She then stopped giving birth.

And she conceived again, and bore a son and she said, Now will I praise the Lord: therefore she called his name Yehuda, and she left off bearing.

And she conceived again and she bore a son, and she said: This time, [having borne more than my share], I will thank (odeh) the L rd. Therefore, she called his name Yehudah. And she left off bearing.
