Rochel saw that she was not bearing children to Yaakov. Rochel became jealous of her sister, and she said to Yaakov, Give me children; if not I am [considered] dead.

And when Raĥel saw that she bore Ya῾aqov no children, Raĥel envied her sister; and said, Give me children, or else I die.

And Rachel saw that she had not borne (a child) to Jacob, and Rachel envied her sister, [thinking that if Leah were not more righteous than she, she, too, would not have borne], and she said to Jacob: "Give me children" [i.e., pray for me to bear children, as your father did for your mother], "and if not, I am dead."

Yaakov became very angry with Rochel, and he said, Am I in God’s place? [It is He] who has withheld from you the fruit of the womb.

And Ya῾aqov’s anger burned against Raĥel: and he said, Am I in the place of God, Who has withheld from thee the fruit of the womb?

And Jacob's wrath burned against Rachel, and he said: Am I in the place of G d, who has withheld from you [(but not from me)] the fruit of the womb?

She said, Here is my handmaid, Bilhah, consummate a marriage with her. Let her give birth upon my knees, and I too will have a son through her.

And she said, Behold my maid Bilha, go in to her; and she shall bear upon my knees, that I may also have children by her.

And she said: Here is my handmaid Bilhah. Come to her and let her bear upon my knees, [i.e., I shall raise her child], and I, too, shall build up [i.e., bear a child] by cause of her, [(as Sarah did after she had given her handmaid Hagar to Abraham)].

She gave him Bilhah, her handmaid, as a wife and Yaakov consummated the marriage with her.

And she gave him Bilha her handmaid to wife: and Ya῾aqov went in to her.

And she gave him Bilhah her handmaid as a wife, and Jacob lived with her.

Bilhah conceived and bore Yaakov a son.

And Bilha conceived, and bore Ya῾aqov a son.

And Bilhah conceived and she bore a son to Jacob.

Rochel said, Elohim has judged me. He has also heard my voice, and has given me a son. She therefore named him Don.

And Raĥel said, God has judged me, and has also heard my voice, and has given me a son: therefore called she his name Dan.

And Rachel said: G d judged me (danani) [and made me barren], and He also heard my plaint and gave me a son — wherefore she called his name Dan.

She conceived again, and Bilhah, Rochel’s handmaid, bore a second son to Yaakov.

And Bilha Raĥel’s maid conceived again, and bore Ya῾aqov a second son.

And she conceived again, and Bilhah, Rachel's handmaid, bore a second son to Jacob.

Rochel said, With Elohim’s bonds, I have been joined to my sister, and I have also prevailed. She [therefore] called him Naftali.

And Raĥel said, With great wrestlings have I wrestled with my sister, and I have prevailed: and she called his name Naftali.

And Rachel said: [With many] importunities (naftulim) did I importune G d [to be equal] with my sister, and I also prevailed [i.e., He was also entreated of me], and she called his name Naftali.

Leah realized that she was no longer bearing children. She [therefore] took Zilpah, her handmaid, and gave her to Yaakov as a wife.

When Le᾽a saw that she had stopped bearing, she took Zilpa her maid, and gave her to Ya῾aqov to wife.

And Leah saw that she had stopped bearing, and she took her handmaid Zilpah and gave her to Jacob as a wife.

Zilpah, Leah’s handmaid, bore Yaakov a son.

And Zilpa Le᾽a’s maid bore Ya῾aqov a son.

And Zilpah, Leah's handmaid, bore a son to Jacob.

Leah said, Unexpected success has come, and she named him Gad.

And Le᾽a said, Fortune comes, and she called his name Gad.

And Leah said: "Bagad" ("Good fortune comes"), and she called his name Gad.

Zilpah, Leah’s handmaid bore a second son to Yaakov.

And Zilpa Le᾽a’s maid bore Ya῾aqov a second son.

And Zilpah, Leah's handmaid, bore a second son to Jacob.

Leah said, It is in my good fortune that daughters [women] will consider me fortunate. She named him Asher.

And Le᾽a said, Happy am I, for the daughters will call me blessed: and she called his name Asher.

And Leah said: For my praise (be'ashri); for daughters will praise me. And she called his name Asher.

Reuvein went in the days of the wheat harvest, and found jasmine flowers in the field. He brought them to Leah, his mother. Rochel said to Leah, Please give me some of your son’s jasmine flowers.

And Re᾽uven went in the days of the wheat harvest, and found mandrakes in the field, and brought them to his mother Le᾽a. Then Raĥel said to Le᾽a, Give me, I pray thee, of thy son’s mandrakes.

And Reuven went in the days of the wheat harvest, and he found violets in the field [(He took what was ownerless and not what had been harvested)], and he brought them to Leah his mother. And Rachel said to Leah: Give me of the violets of your son.

She [Leah] said to her, Isn’t it enough that you took my husband? Would you also take my son’s jasmine flowers? Rochel said, Therefore, he shall be with you tonight in exchange for your son’s jasmine flowers.

And she said to her, Is it a small matter that thou hast taken my husband? and wouldst thou take away my son’s mandrakes also? And Raĥel said, Therefore he shall lie with thee tonight for thy son’s mandrakes.

And she said to her: Is your taking my husband too little that you would also take the violets of my son? And Rachel said: Therefore, he will lie with you this night [(which was "Rachel's night")] in exchange for the violets of your son.

Yaakov came from the field in the evening, and Leah went out to meet him. She said, You will come to me, for I have hired you with my son’s jasmine flowers, and he was with her at night.

And Ya῾aqov came out of the field in the evening, and Le᾽a went out to meet him, and said, Thou must come in to me; for indeed I have hired thee with my son’s mandrakes. And he lay with her that night.

And Jacob came from the field in the evening, and Leah went out towards him, and she said: To me shall you come, for I hired you with the violets of my son; and he lay with her in that night, He [i.e., The L rd, "aided," Issachar issuing from that union].

Elohim perceived Leah’s [wish]. She conceived and bore [her] fifth son to Yaakov.

And God hearkened to Le᾽a, and she conceived, and bore Ya῾aqov a fifth son.

And G d hearkened unto Leah, [who aspired to multiply tribes], and she conceived and she bore a fifth son to Jacob.

Leah said, Elohim has given me my reward because I gave my handmaid to my husband. She named him Yissachar.

And Le᾽a said, God has given me my hire, because I have given my maiden to my husband: and she called his name Yissakhar.

And Leah said: G d has given my reward (s'chari) for having given my handmaid to my husband, and she called his name Issachar.

Leah conceived again and bore [her] sixth son to Yaakov.

And Le᾽a conceived again, and bore Ya῾aqov a sixth son.

And Leah conceived again, and she bore a sixth son to Jacob.

Leah said, Elohim has given a goodly portion. Now my husband will make his [main] home with me, for I have borne him six sons. She named him Zevulun.

And Le᾽a said, God has endowed me with a good dowry; now will my husband dwell with me, because I have born him six sons: and she called his name Zevulun.

And Leah said: The L rd has given me a goodly portion. Now my husband will consort with me (yizbeleni), for I have borne him six sons [(over and against all of his wives)]. And she called his name Zevulun.

Afterwards she gave birth to a daughter, and named her Deenah.

And afterwards she bore a daughter, and called her name Dina.

And then she bore a daughter, and she called her name Dinah.

Elohim remembered Rochel and opened her womb.

And God remembered Raĥel, and God hearkened to her, and opened her womb.

And G d remembered (it) unto Rachel [that she had given her "signs" to Leah and that she was distraught lest Esau take her], and G d hearkened unto her and He opened her womb.

She conceived and gave birth to a son. She said, Elohim has removed my shame.

And she conceived, and bore a son; and said, God has taken away my reproach:

And she conceived and she bore a son, and she said: G d has gathered in (asaf) my shame.

She named him Yoseif, saying, May Adonoy add to me another son.

and she called his name Yosef; and said, The Lord shall add to me another son.

And she called his name Yosef, saying: May the L rd add ("yosef") unto me another son [(Rachel knowing prophetically that there would be only twelve tribes)].

When Rochel had given birth to Yoseif, Yaakov said to Lavan, Send me on my way, and I will go to my own place and to my homeland.

And it came to pass, when Raĥel had born Yosef, that Ya῾aqov said to Lavan, Send me away, that I may go to my own place, and to my country.

And it was, when Rachel bore Joseph [the "adversary" of Esau (see Ovadiah 1:18)] that Jacob said to Lavan: Send me away, that I may go to my place and to my land.

Give me [permission to take] my wives and my children, for whom I worked for you, and I will go; for you know my work that I did for you.

Give me my wives and my children, for whom I have served thee, and let me go: for thou knowst my service which I have done thee.

Give me [by your leave] my wives and my children for whom I served you, and let me go. For you know the service which I have served you.

Lavan said to him, If I have found favor in your eyes, I have divined that Adonoy has blessed me because of you.

And Lavan said to him, I pray thee, if I have found favour in thine eyes, I have learned by signs that the Lord has blessed me for thy sake.

And Lavan said to him: If I have found favor in your eyes, I have found through divination that the L rd has blessed me for your sake.

He said, Set your wage for me, and I will give it.

And he said, Appoint me thy wages, and I will give it.

And he said: State your wage and I will give it.

He [Yaakov] said to him, You know how I worked for you, and how your livestock were with me.

And he said to him, Thou knowst how I have served thee, and how thy cattle were with me.

And he said to him: You know how I have served you and how [few] your kine were with me.

For the little you had before I came here has increased and has become a multitude. Adonoy has blessed you with my coming. Now when will I also do something for my own house?

For the little which thou hadst before I came is now increased to a multitude; and the Lord has blessed thee since my coming: and now when shall I provide for my own house also?

For the little that you had before has increased to a multitude, and the L rd has blessed you with my coming, and now, when will I also [in addition to my sons] do (what is needed) for my household?

He [Lavan] said, What shall I give you? Yaakov said, Do not give me anything—if you do this thing for me. I will continue to tend your flock and guard it.

And he said, What shall I give thee? And Ya῾aqov said, Thou shalt not give me anything: if thou wilt do this thing for me, I will again feed and keep thy flock.

And he said: What shall I give you? And Jacob said: You will not give me anything. If you do this thing for me, I will return and graze and guard your flock.

I will go through all your flocks this day. I will remove from them every lamb that is speckled, or spotted, and every dark one among the sheep, and every goat that is spotted and speckled. That [kind] will be my wage.

I will pass through all thy flock today, removing from there all the speckled and spotted cattle, and all the brown ones among the sheep, and the spotted and speckled among the goats: and of such shall be my hire.

I will pass through all your flock today, removing from there every sheep speckled and spotted, and every sheep, brownish among the flock, and the spotted and speckled among the goats, [these to be given to your sons], and that [i.e., those of the above kind born from now on] shall be my wage.

My righteousness shall testify for me in the future when it comes before you regarding my wage. Any goat which is not speckled or spotted, and any sheep that is [not] dark, is stolen [if it is] in my possession.

So shall my righteousness answer for me in time to come, when thou shalt come to see my hire before thy face: every one that is not speckled and spotted among the goats, and brown among the sheep, that shall be counted stolen with me.

And my righteousness shall answer for me on the morrow. For it [my righteousness] will come [and testify] to my wage before you, [i.e.,] anything [which you find in my flock] that is not speckled and spotted among the goats or brownish among the sheep is stolen with me.

Lavan said, Agreed, may it be as you say.

And Lavan said, Behold, would it might be according to thy word.

And Lavan said: Agreed! Would that you wished it so!

That day he [Lavan] removed the he-goats that were ringed and spotted, and all the she-goats that were speckled and spotted, everyone that had white in it, and all the dark ones among the sheep; and he gave them to his sons.

And he removed that day the he goats that were streaked and spotted, and all the she goats that were speckled and spotted, and every one that had some white in it, and all the brown ones among the sheep, and gave them into the hand of his sons.

And he [Lavan] removed on that day the he-goats that were ringstraked and spotted, and all the she-goats that were speckled and spotted — everything that had white in it — and everything that was brownish among the sheep, and he [Lavan] gave them into the hands of his sons.

He placed a three days journey between himself and Yaakov. Yaakov tended Lavan’s remaining flocks.

And he set three days’ journey between himself and Ya῾aqov: and Ya῾aqov tended the rest of Lavan’s flocks.

And he put three days distance between himself and Jacob, and Jacob grazed the flock of Lavan that were left [i.e., the sickly and barren ones].

Yaakov took rods of poplar that were fresh, hazel and chestnut [trees], and peeled white stripes in them by uncovering the white which is in the rods.

And Ya῾aqov took him rods of green poplar, and of the almond and plane tree; and peeled white streaks in them, and made the white appear which was in the rods.

And Jacob took a moist stick of white poplar and [a stick of] almond and of chestnut, and he peeled them into white streaks, baring the white on the sticks.

He stuck the rods that he had peeled into the ducts of the watering troughs where the flock [ewes] came to drink, facing the flock [rams]; that they should become heated when they came to drink.

And he set the rods which he had peeled before the flocks in the gutters in the watering troughs when the flocks came to drink, that they should conceive when they came to drink.

And he set the sticks which he had peeled in the gutters of the watering troughs where the flocks came to drink, opposite the flocks, and they became heated when they came to drink [i.e., the female recoiled at the sight of the sticks and the male mated with her, and she bore in their likeness].

The flock became heated [and mated] before the rods, and the flock gave birth to ringed, speckled and spotted [offspring].

And the flocks conceived before the rods, and brought forth cattle streaked, speckled, and spotted.

And the flocks became heated at the [sight of the] sticks [(as above)], and the flocks bore ringstraked, speckled, and spotted.

Yaakov separated the lambs. He set the faces of the flock toward the ringed ones and all the dark ones; [he did so] with Lavan’s flocks. He formed separate flocks of his own, and did not set them with Lavan’s flocks.

And Ya῾aqov separated the lambs, and set the faces of the flocks toward the streaked and all the brown in the flock of Lavan; and he put his own flocks by themselves, and put them not to Lavan’s cattle.

And Jacob separated the sheep [that were born ringstraked and spotted], and he set the face of the flock [that followed them] to the ringstraked and to all of the brownish [that he had found] in the flock of Lavan, having put them in flocks by themselves. And he did not place them with the flock of Lavan.

When the early-bearing flock were heated [to mate], Yaakov placed the rods before the flock’s eyes at the ducts, so they would be in heat among the rods.

And it came to pass, whenever the stronger cattle did conceive, that Ya῾aqov laid the rods before the eyes of the cattle in the gutters, that they might conceive among the rods.

And it was, whenever the early (aroused) sheep became heated, that Jacob set the sticks before the eyes of the sheep in the gutters to become heated at [the sight of] the sticks. [see 38]

But when the flock were late-bearing, he did not place [the rods before them]. Thus the late-bearing ones were Lavan’s, and the early-bearing ones became the possession of Yaakov.

But when the cattle were feeble, he did not put them in: so the feebler were Lavan’s, and the stronger Ya῾aqov’s.

And when the sheep were late (to become heated), he did not set (them) — and the (offspring of the) late ones were Lavan's, and the early ones, Jacob's.

The man became tremendously prosperous. He had multipying flocks, female slaves and male slaves, camels and donkeys.

And the man increased exceedingly, and had much cattle, and maidservants, and menservants, and camels, and asses.

And the man (Jacob) grew exceedingly strong, and he had flocks [more] fruitful [than the norm], and [(by selling them at a high price)] maidservants, manservants, camels, and asses.
