Deenah went out, the daughter of Leah, whom she had borne to Yaakov, to see [visit] the local girls.

And Dina the daughter of Le᾽a, whom she bore to Ya῾aqov, went out to see the daughters of the land.

And Dinah the daughter of Leah ["Like mother, like daughter" — Leah also "went out" (30:16)], whom she had borne to Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land.

She was seen by Shechem, son of Chamor, the Chivite, who was the prince of the land. He took her, was with her, and mistreated her.

And when Shekhem the son of Ḥamor the Ḥivvite, prince of the country, saw her, he took her, and lay with her, and defiled her.

And Shchem the son of Chamor, the Chivi, the prince of the land, saw her, and he took her and he lay with her [naturally], and he afflicted her [unnaturally].

He became deeply attached to Deenah, the daughter of Yaakov, and he loved the girl. He spoke to the girl’s heart.

And his soul was drawn to Dina the daughter of Ya῾aqov, and he loved the girl, and spoke kindly to the girl.

And his soul cleaved to Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the maiden and he spoke to the heart of the maiden [by suasion].

Shechem spoke to his father Chamor, saying, Take this young girl for me as a wife.

And Shekhem spoke to his father Ḥamor, saying, Get me this child for a wife.

And Shchem said to Chamor, his father: Take this girl for me as a wife.

Yaakov heard that he had defiled his daughter, Deenah, [while] his sons were with the livestock in the fields. Yaakov remained silent until they returned.

And Ya῾aqov heard that he had defiled Dina his daughter: now his sons were with his cattle in the field: and Ya῾aqov held his peace until they were come.

And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter, and his sons were with his herds in the field, and Jacob remained silent until they came.

Chamor, father of Shechem, went out to Yaakov to speak with him.

And Ḥamor the father of Shekhem went out to Ya῾aqov to speak with him.

And Chamor the father of Shchem went out to Jacob to speak to him.

The sons of Yaakov returned from the field when they heard [what had happened]. The men grieved and were very angry, for he [Shechem] had committed an outrage against Yisrael to lie with a daughter of Yaakov. Such a thing should not be done.

And the sons of Ya῾aqov came from the field when they heard it: and the men were grieved, and they were very angry, because he had done a disgraceful thing in Yisra᾽el in lying with Ya῾aqov’s daughter; which thing ought not to be done.

And the sons of Jacob came from the field when they heard, and the men were saddened and greatly angered, for he had done a shameful thing in Israel to lie with the daughter of Jacob, and such [(to afflict virgins)] was not to be done, [the nations having "fenced themselves" against illicit relations after the flood].

Chamor spoke with them saying, My son, Shechem, desires your daughter. Please grant her to him for a wife.

And Ḥamor spoke with them, saying, The soul of my son Shekhem longs for your daughter: I pray you give her him to wife.

And Chamor spoke with them, saying: My son, Shchem, desired your daughter. Give her to him, I pray you, as a wife.

Intermarry with us. Give us your daughters, and take our daughters for yourselves.

And make marriages with us; give your daughters to us, and take our daughters to you.

And intermarry with us. Give us your daughters [as you choose], and our daughters take for yourselves [as you choose].

You will [then] live with us and the land will be open to you. Live and trade in it and possess it.

And you shall dwell with us: and the land shall be before you; dwell and trade in it, and get property in it.

And dwell with us and the land shall be before you. Sit and trade in it, and gain a holding in it.

Shechem said to her father and her brothers, Let me find favor in your eyes and what ever you say [ask of me], I will give.

And Shekhem said to her father and to her brethren, Let me find favour in your eyes, and what you shall say to me I will give.

And Shchem said to her father and to her brothers: Let me find favor in your eyes, and what you tell me shall I give.

Increase greatly the amount I must pay for the bridal dowry and gifts. I will give whatever you say, but give me the girl for a wife.

Ask me never so much dowry and gift, and I will give according as you shall say to me: but give me the girl for a wife.

Heap upon me much dowry and gift, and I will give it, as you tell me, but give me the maiden as a wife.

The sons of Yaakov answered Shechem, and his father Chamor, with guile, when they spoke; because he had defiled their sister, Deenah.

And the sons of Ya῾aqov answered Shekhem and Ḥamor his father with cunning, because he had defiled Dina their sister, and they spoke:

And the sons of Jacob answered Shchem and Chamor his father with subtlety, and they spoke [thus rightfully], for he had defiled Dinah their sister.

They said to them, We cannot do such a thing—to give our sister [in marriage] to an uncircumcised man, for that is a disgrace to us.

and they said to them, We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one that is uncircumcised; for that would be a reproach to us:

And they said to them: We shall not be able to do this thing, to give our sister to a man with a foreskin, for it is an abomination to us.

This is the only way we will consent to you: if you will be like us, circumcising all your males.

but in this will we consent to you: If you will be as we are, that every male of you be circumcised;

Only with this will we consent to you, if you will be like us — to have all your males circumcised.

[Then] we will give our daughters to you, and we will take your daughters for ourselves. We will live together with you, and we will become one people.

then will we give our daughters to you, and we will take your daughters to us, and we will dwell with you, and we will become one people.

Then we will give our daughters to you [as we choose], and your daughters [i.e., those we choose] shall we take for ourselves. And we will dwell with you and we will be one people.

But if you do not listen to us to be circumcised, we will take our daughter and go.

But if you will not hearken to us, to be circumcised; then will we take our daughter, and we will be gone.

And if you do not heed us to circumcise yourselves, then we will take our daughter and go.

Their words were agreeable in the eyes of Chamor, and in the eyes of Shechem, the son of Chamor.

And their words pleased Ḥamor, and Shekhem, Ḥamor’s son.

And their words were good in the eyes of Chamor and in the eyes of Shchem the son of Chamor.

The young man did not delay doing the thing, because he desired the daughter of Yaakov. He was the most honored person in his father’s house.

And the young man did not delay to do the thing, because he had delight in Ya῾aqov’s daughter: and he was the most honoured of all the house of his father.

And the young man did not delay doing the thing, for he desired the daughter of Jacob, and he was the most highly honored in his father's house.

Chamor and his son, Shechem came to the gate of their city, and they spoke to the men of their city saying,

And Ḥamor and Shekhem his son came to the gate of their city, and spoke with the men of their city, saying,

And Chamor and Shchem his son came to the gate of their city and they spoke to the men of their city, saying:

These men are completely at peace with us. Let them live in the land and trade in it. The land has ample room to be open to them. We will take their daughters for wives, and we will give them our daughters.

These men are peaceable with us; therefore let them dwell in the land, and trade in it; for the land, behold, it is large enough for them; let us take their daughters to us for wives, and let us give them our daughters.

These men are whole-hearted with us. Let them dwell in the land and trade in it; the land is "broad-handed" [i.e., ample] before them [You will lose nothing by their presence.] Their daughters shall we take for ourselves as wives [by our choice], and our daughters shall we give to them [by our choice].

But only on these terms will the men consent to live with us, to become one people: every male among us must be circumcised, just as they are circumcised.

Only on this condition will the men consent to us to dwell with us, to be one people, if every male among us be circumcised, as they are circumcised.

Only with this will the men consent to dwell with us, to be one people, by all of our males being circumcised as they are circumcised.

Their livestock, their possessions and all their cattle, will it not be ours? Only let us consent to them, and they will live with us.

Shall not their cattle and their substance and every beast of theirs be ours? only let us consent to them, and they will dwell with us.

Their herds, their possessions, and all of their beasts — are they not ours? Let us but consent to them [to be circumcised], and they will dwell with us.

They listened to Chamor, and to his son, Shechem—all those who passed through the gate of his city. Every male was circumcised—all who passed through the gate of his city.

And to Ḥamor and to Shekhem his son all that went out of the gate of his city hearkened; and every male was circumcised, all that went out of the gate of his city.

And they hearkened to Chamor and to Shchem his son, all that went out of the gate of his city, and all the males were circumcised, all that went out of the gate of his city.

On the third day when they were in pain, two of Yaakov’s sons, Shimon and Leivi, brothers of Deenah, each took his sword. They approached the city with confidence, and killed every male.

And it came to pass on the third day, when they were in pain, that two of the sons of Ya῾aqov, Shim῾on and Levi, Dina’s brethren, took each man his sword, and came upon the city unresisted, and slew all the males.

And it was on the third day, when they were in pain, that two of Jacob's sons [(Though they were Jacob's sons, they did not consult him)], Shimon and Levi, the brothers of Dinah, [risking their lives for her], took each man his sword, and came upon the city secure, [in that the men were ailing], and they killed every male.

They killed Chamor and his son Shechem at the point of the sword. They took Deenah from the house of Shechem and they left.

And they slew Ḥamor and Shekhem his son with the edge of the sword, and took Dina out of Shekhem’s house, and went out.

And Chamor and Shchem his son they slew by the sword, and they took Dinah from the house of Shchem and they went out.

The sons of Yaakov came upon the corpses, and they plundered the city that had defiled their sister.

The sons of Ya῾aqov came upon the slain, and plundered the city, because they had defiled their sister.

The sons of Jacob came upon the slain [to strip them], and they despoiled the city that had defiled their sister.

Their sheep, their cattle, their donkeys, whatever was in the city and whatever was in the field—they took.

They took their sheep, and their oxen, and their asses, and that which was in the city, and that which was in the field,

Their sheep, their cattle, and their asses, and what was in the city and what was in the field they took.

All their wealth, all their children, and their wives—they took captive, and plundered—including everything in the houses.

Yaakov said to Shimon and Leivi, You have made trouble for me, making me obnoxious to the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites and the Perizzites. [Since] I am few in number, they will gather together and attack me. I and my house [family] will be destroyed.

And Ya῾aqov said to Shim῾on and Levi, You have brought trouble on me to make me odious among the inhabitants of the land, among the Kena῾ani and the Perizzi; and I being few in number, they shall gather themselves together against me, and slay me; and I shall be destroyed, I and my house.

And Jacob said to Shimon and to Levi: You have sullied me, to make me odious with the inhabitant of the land, the Canaani and Perizi. And I am but few in number, and they will gather against me and smite me, and I will be destroyed, I and my house.

They said, Should he make our sister into a harlot ?

But they said, Should he deal with our sister as with a harlot?

And they said: Shall they make our sister as an abandoned one!
