Yaakov settled in the land of his father’s residence, in the land of Canaan.

And Ya῾aqov dwelt in the land in which his father had sojourned, in the land of Kena῾an.

And Jacob dwelt in the land of his father's sojournings, in the land of Canaan.

This is the history of Yaakov; Yoseif at the age of seventeen years, would tend the sheep with his brothers, and the lad was with the sons of Bilhah, and the sons of Zilpah, his father’s wives. Yoseif brought back bad reports about them to their father.

These are the generations of Ya῾aqov. Yosef being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren; and the lad was with the sons of Bilha, and with the sons of Zilpa, his father’s wives: and Yosef brought to his father their evil report.

[And] these [(following the abbreviated chronicles of Esau)] are the [habitations and wanderings of the] generations of Jacob [until they came to a permanent settlement]: Joseph, when he was seventeen years old, grazed the flock with his brothers. And he was a lad [He would do callow things, preening and primping himself], (associating) with the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, the wives of his father. [His brothers scorned them, and he befriended them.] And Joseph brought evil report of them [the sons of Leah] to their father.

Yisrael loved Yoseif more than any of his sons, for he was a son of his old age to him, and he made him a long, colorful cloak.

Now Yisra᾽el loved Yosef more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat with long sleeves.

And Israel loved Joseph more than all his sons, for he was the son of his old age. And he made him a robe of fine wool.

His brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, and they hated him. They could not speak to him peaceably.

And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably to him.

And his brothers saw that his father loved him more than all his brothers, and they [being "one in mouth and one in heart"] could not speak peaceably to him.

Yoseif had a dream and he told his brothers, and they hated him even more.

And Yosef dreamed a dream, and he told it his brethren: and they hated him yet the more.

And Joseph dreamed a dream and he told (the dream) to his brothers, and they hated him even more.

He said to them, Listen to this dream that I dreamt.

And he said to them, Hear, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed:

And he said to them: Hear, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed.

Behold, we were binding sheaves in the middle of the field. Behold my sheaf rose and stood up straight; and behold your sheaves surrounded it and prostrated themselves to my sheaf.

for, behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and, lo, my sheaf arose, and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves stood round about, and bowed down to my sheaf.

And, behold, we were binding sheaves in the midst of the field, and, behold, my sheaf arose and remained standing, and behold, your sheaves surrounded it and bowed down to my sheaf.

His brothers said to him, Will you then be a king over us? Will you indeed rule over us? They hated him even more because of his dreams and his words.

And his brethren said to him, Shalt thou indeed reign over us? or shalt thou indeed have dominion over us? And they hated him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words.

And his brothers said to him: Will you reign over us? Will you rule over us? And they hated him even more for his dreams and for his words [the evil report (2)].

He had another dream and told it to his brothers. He said, Behold! I dreamed another dream. The sun, the moon, and eleven stars were prostrating themselves to me.

And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it his brethren, and said, Behold, I have again dreamed a dream; and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars bowed down to me.

And he dreamed another dream, and he told it to his brothers, and he said: Behold, I have dreamed another dream, and, behold, the sun and the moon and eleven stars bowing down to me.

He told it to his father and to his brothers. His father rebuked him, and said to him, What is this dream that you dreamed? Shall I, your mother and your brothers come and prostrate themselves on the ground to you?

And he told it to his father, and to his brothers: and his father rebuked him, and said to him, What is this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brothers indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth?

And he told it to his father and to his brothers [together, after having told it to his brothers]. And his father rebuked him [for arousing hatred to himself] and he said to him: What is this dream which you have dreamed? Shall I and your mother and your brothers come to bow down to you to the earth? [i.e., How can this be if your mother is dead! (Jacob not knowing that it would be fulfilled through Bilhah, who had reared Joseph as a mother.)]

His brothers were jealous of him but his father kept the matter in mind.

And his brothers envied him; but his father kept the matter in mind.

And his brothers envied him, and his father awaited the [materialization of] the thing.

His brothers went off to pasture their father’s sheep in Shechem.

And his brothers went to feed their father’s flock in Shekhem.

And his brothers went to graze their father's flock in Shchem.

Yisrael said to Yoseif, Aren’t your brothers pasturing [the sheep] in Shechem? Come, I will send you to them. He [Yoseif] said to him, Here I am.

And Yisra᾽el said to Yosef, Do not thy brothers feed the flock in Shekhem? come, and I will send thee to them. And he said to him, Here I am.

And Israel said to Joseph: Are your brothers not grazing in Shchem? Go, and I will send you to them. And he said to him: I am here [at your service (though knowing that his brothers hated him)].

He [Yisrael] said to him, Go please, see after the well-being of your brothers, and the welfare of the sheep, and bring me a report. He sent [Yoseif] from the depths of Chevron, and he came to Shechem.

And he said to him, Go, I pray thee, see whether it be well with thy brothers, and well with the flocks; and bring me word again. So he sent him out of the vale of Ḥevron, and he came to Shekhem.

And he said to him: Go now, and see how your brothers fare and how the flock fares, and return word to me. And he sent him from [i.e., towards realization of] the deep [counsel of the one (Abraham) buried in] Chevron, [viz. (15:13): "For your seed shall be a stranger, etc."], and he came to Shchem.

A man found him going astray in the field. The man asked him, What are you seeking?

And a certain man found him, and, behold, he was wandering in the field: and the man asked him, saying, What seekest thou?

And a man [the angel Gabriel] found him, and, behold, he was straying in the field. And the man asked him: What are you seeking?

He said, I am looking for my brothers, tell me please, where are they pasturing?

And he said, I seek my brothers: tell me, I pray thee, where they feed their flocks.

And he said: I am seeking my brothers; tell me, I pray you, where they are grazing.

The man said, They have traveled on from here, for I heard them say, Let us go to Doson. Yoseif went after his brothers and found them in Doson.

And the man said, They are departed from here; for I heard them say, Let us go to Dotan. And Yosef went after his brothers, and found them in Dotan.

And the man said: They have departed from this [i.e., from brotherhood]. For I heard them saying: Let us go to Dothan. And Joseph went after his brothers, and he found them in Dothan.

They saw him from a distance, and before he approached them they were plotting against him to kill him.

And when they saw him afar off, even before he came near to them, they conspired against him to slay him.

And they saw him from afar. And before he approached them they schemed against him to put him to death.

One man said to another, Here comes the dreamer.

And they said one to another, Behold, this dreamer comes.

And each said to the other: Behold, this dreamer of dreams is coming.

Now, come let us kill him and throw him into one of the pits; and we will say that a wild beast devoured him. Then we will see what will become of his dreams.

Come now therefore, and let us slay him, and cast him into some pit, and we will say, An evil beast has devoured him: and we shall see what will become of his dreams.

And now, let us go to slay him, and let us cast him in one of the pits. And we will say: An evil beast devoured him, and [(the Holy Spirit thus saying)]: We will see what will be his dreams [i.e., whether your words will be fulfilled or Mine].

Reuvein heard and rescued him from their hands. He said, Let us not kill him.

And Re᾽uven heard it, and he delivered him out of their hands; and said, Let us not kill him.

And Reuven heard and he rescued him from their hand, saying: Let us not strike him a death blow.

Reuvein said to them, Do not commit bloodshed. Throw him into this pit which is in the wilderness, and do not lay a hand on him. His purpose was to rescue him from their hands, to bring him back to his father.

And Re᾽uven said to them, Shed no blood, but cast him into this pit that is in the wilderness, and lay no hand upon him; that he might save him out of their hands, to deliver him back to his father.

And Reuven said to them: Do not spill blood. Cast him into this pit, which is in the desert, but do not send a hand against him, [Reuven saying this (thus the testimony of the Holy Spirit)] in order to rescue him from their hands, to return him to his father.

When Yoseif came to his brothers, they stripped him of his coat, the long, colorful coat that he had on.

And it came to pass, when Yosef was come to his brethren, that they stripped Yosef of his coat, the long sleeved coat that was on him.

And it was, when Joseph came to his brothers, that they stripped Joseph of his robe, the robe of fine wool that was upon him.

They took him and threw him into the pit. The pit was empty; there was no water in it.

And they took him, and cast him into a pit: and the pit was empty; there was no water in it.

They sat down to eat bread. They raised their eyes and saw—behold a Yishmaelite caravan was coming from Gilod. Their camels were carrying spices, balsam and lotus, bringing them down to Egypt.

And they sat down to eat bread: and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and, behold, a company of Yishme᾽elim came from Gil῾ad with their camels bearing gum balm and ladanum, going to carry it down to Miżrayim.

And they sat down to eat bread, and they lifted their eyes and they saw, and, behold, a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead, and their camels laden with spicery, balm, and laudanum [(rather than the usual foul-smelling load — providentially, for Joseph's benefit)], going to take it down to Egypt.

Yehudah said to his brothers, What will we gain if we kill our brother and cover up his blood?

And Yehuda said to his brothers, What profit is it if we slay our brother, and conceal his blood?

And Judah said to his brothers: What [monetary] profit if we kill our brother and conceal his death?

Come let us sell him to the Yishmaelites, and let our hands not be upon him; for he is our brother, our own flesh. His brothers listened [to him.].

Come, and let us sell him to the Yishme᾽elim, and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother and our flesh.

Let us go and sell him to the Ishmaelites, and let our hand not be against him, for he is our brother, our flesh; and his brothers acquiesced.

Midianite merchants passed by. They [the brothers] pulled Yoseif up from the pit and sold Yoseif to the Yishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver. They brought Yoseif to Egypt.

And his brothers hearkened to him. Then there passed by Midyanim, merchants; and they drew and lifted up Yosef out of the pit, and sold Yosef to the Yishme᾽elim for twenty pieces of silver: and they brought Yosef into Miżrayim.

And Midianite merchants passed by; and they [Joseph's brothers] pulled and raised Joseph out of the pit, and they sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver [and the Ishmaelites sold him to the Midianites] and they brought Joseph to Egypt.

Reuvein returned to the pit, but behold, Yoseif was not in the pit. He [then] tore his clothes [in grief.]

And Re᾽uven returned to the pit; and, behold, Yosef was not in the pit; and he rent his clothes.

And Reuven returned to the pit, [it having been his day to pay attendance upon his father], and, behold, Joseph was not in the pit, and he rent his garments.

He returned to his brothers and said, The boy is not there; and I—where can I go.

And he returned to his brothers, and said, The child is not; and I, where shall I go?

And he returned to his brothers and he said: The youth is not here, and I, where shall I come? [i.e., Whither shall I flee from my father's grief?]

They took Yoseif’s coat, slaughtered a goat, and dipped the coat in the blood.

And they took Yosef’s coat, and killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the coat in the blood;

And they took Joseph's robe, and they slaughtered a kid of goats, [whose blood is similar to a man's], and they dipped the robe in the blood.

They sent the long, colorful coat and brought it to their father, and said, We found this. Please identify it. Is it your son’s coat or not?

and they sent the coat with long sleeves, and they brought it to their father; and said, This we have found: know now whether it be thy son’s coat or no.

And they sent the robe of fine wool and they brought it to their father. And they said: This we found. Recognize, now, whether or not it is your son's robe.

He recognized it and said, It is my son’s coat. An evil beast has devoured him. Yoseif has been torn to pieces.

And he knew it, and said, It is my son’s coat; an evil beast has devoured him; Yosef is without doubt torn in pieces.

And he recognized it, and he said: The robe of my son. A wild beast has devoured him; Joseph has been torn.

Yaakov tore his robes, and placed sackcloth on his loins. He mourned for his son for many days.

And Ya῾aqov rent his clothes, and put sackcloth on his loins, and mourned for his son many days.

And Jacob rent his garments and placed sackcloth on his loins, and he mourned his son many days [twenty-two years].

All his sons and all his daughters rose to console him, but he refused to be consoled. He said, I will go down to the grave mourning for my son. His father wept for him.

And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted; and he said, For I will go down to my son mourning into She᾽ol. Thus his father wept for him.

And all his sons and all his daughters arose to console him [(one view: a twin girl was born with each son, and each married a step-sister. Another view: "daughters" here are daughters-in-law)]. And he refused to be consoled, [consolation not "taking" for a living person who is thought dead.] And he said: For I will go down to the grave mourning over my son. And his father [Isaac] bewept him [Jacob (for his grieving)].

The Midianites sold him in Egypt to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, the chief of the slaughterers.

And the Midyanim sold him to Miżrayim to Potifar, Par῾o’s chamberlain, a captain of the guard.

And the Medanites sold him to Egypt to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, head of the slaughterers.
