He commanded the one in charge of his house, saying, Fill the men’s bags with as much food as they can carry, and place each man’s money in the opening of his bag.

And he commanded the steward of his house, saying, Fill the men’s sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put every man’s money in the mouth of his sack.

And he charged the one over his house, saying: Fill the sacks of the men with food, as much as they can carry, and place each one's money in the mouth of his sack.

And my goblet, the silver goblet, put in the opening of the youngest one’s bag, together with the money for his purchase of food. He acted according to the word Yoseif had spoken.

And put my cup, the silver cup, in the mouth of the sack of the youngest, and his corn money. And he did according to the word that Yosef had spoken.

And my goblet, the silver goblet, place in the mouth of the sack of the youngest and the money of his grain purchase. And he did according to the word of Joseph, who had spoken.

With the morning light, the men were sent [on their way] together with their donkeys.

As soon as the morning was light, the men were sent away, they and their asses.

Morning dawned and the men were sent away, they and their asses.

They had just left the city, they had not gone far, when Yoseif said to the one in charge of his house, Get up, pursue the men, and when you catch up with them, say to them, Why did you repay good with evil.

And when they were gone out of the city, and not yet far off, Yosef said to his steward, Up, follow after the men; and when thou dost overtake them, say to them, Why have you rewarded evil for good?

They had left the city and had not gone far when Joseph said to the one over his house: Arise, pursue the men, and when you overtake them, say to them: Why did you pay evil for good?

Why, this is [the goblet] from which my master drinks. He uses it for divination. You have acted badly in what you have done.

Is not this that from which my lord drinks, and whereby indeed he divines? you have done evil in so doing.

Is not this what my master drinks in and through which he divines? You have done evil by what you have done.

He caught up with them, and spoke these exact words to them.

And he overtook them, and he spoke to them these same words.

And he overtook them, and he spoke these things to them.

They said to him, Why does my master speak such words? It would be degrading for your servants to do such a thing.

And they said to him, Why does my lord say these words? Far be it from thy servants to do according to this thing:

And they said to him: Why should my lord speak such things? It would be profane in your servants to do such a thing!

Behold the money that we found in the opening of our bags, we brought back to you from the land of Canaan. How then could we have stolen silver or gold from your master’s house?

behold, the money, which we found in our sacks’ mouths, we brought again to thee out of the land of Kena῾an: how then should we steal out of thy lord’s house silver or gold?

Behold, the money which we found in the mouth of our sacks we returned to you from the land of Canaan. How, then, would we steal from your master's house silver or gold!

He among your servants with whom it is found, he shall die. We will also be servants to my master.

With whomever of thy servants it be found, let him die, and we also will be my lord’s bondmen.

With whomever it is found of your servants, he shall die, and we, too, shall be servants to my lord.

And he said, Your words are now also correct. The one with whom it is found, he shall be my slave, and you shall be guiltless.

And he said, Now also let it be according to your words: he with whom it is found shall be my bondman; and you shall be blameless.

And he said: This, too, is as you say; it is true [that if one among ten is found to have stolen, all should be apprehended, but I shall be liberal, and only] the one with whom it is found shall be my slave, and you will be absolved.

They hurried, and each man lowered his bag to the ground, and each man opened his bag.

Then they speedily took down every man his sack to the ground, and opened every man his sack.

And they hastened, and each brought his sack down to the ground, and each opened his sack.

He searched, beginning with the oldest, and ending with the youngest. The goblet was found in Binyomin’s bag.

And he searched, and began at the eldest, and ended at the youngest: and the cup was found in Binyamin’s sack.

And he searched, beginning with the oldest, [so that they not suspect him of knowing where it was], and finishing with the youngest, and the goblet was found in Benjamin's sack.

They tore their garments [in grief]. Each man loaded his donkey, and they returned to the city.

Then they rent their clothes, and loaded every man his ass, and returned to the city.

And they rent their garments, and each [individually, without requiring another's assistance] laded his ass, and they returned to the city [(really a metropolis, but, in their eyes, merely a "city" (of ten) in its defenselessness before them)].

Yehudah and his brothers came to Yoseif’s house. He was still there, and they fell to the ground before him.

And Yehuda and his brethren came to Yosef’s house; for he was still there: and they fell before him to the ground.

And Judah and his brothers came to the house of Joseph, and he was still there [waiting for them], and they fell before him to the ground.

Yoseif said to them, What is this deed that you have done? Do you not know that a man like me is an expert diviner ?

And Yosef said to them, What deed is this that you have done? do you not know that such a man as I can certainly divine?

And Joseph said to them: What is this deed that you have done? Did you not know that a man such as I could divine [that you had stolen the goblet]?

Yehudah said, What shall we say to my master? What can we speak? How can we justify ourselves? God has found the iniquity of your servants. Let us be slaves to my master, both we, and the one in whose hand the goblet was found.

And Yehuda said, What shall we say to my lord? what shall we speak? or how shall we clear ourselves? God has found out the iniquity of thy servants: behold, we are my lord’s bondmen, both we, and he also with whom the cup is found.

And Judah said: What shall we say to my lord? What shall we speak and how shall we justify ourselves? [We did not sin in this instance (of the goblet), but] G d has found [a way to exact punishment for] the [former] sin of your servants. We are slaves to my lord, both we, both him in whose hand the goblet has been found.

He [Yoseif] said [to them], It would be degrading for me to do such a thing. The man in whose hand the goblet was found, he shall be my slave, and [the rest of] you go up in peace to your father.

And he said, Far be it from me that I should do so: but the man in whose hand the cup is found, he shall be my bondman; and as for you, go up in peace to your father.

And he said: It were profane in me to do this! The man in whose hand the goblet is found — he shall be my servant. And you, go up in peace to your father.

Yehudah approached him [Yoseif] and said, Please my master, let your servant speak a word in my master’s ears, and do not be angry with your servant; for you are equal to Pharaoh.

Then Yehuda came near to him, and said, Oh my lord, let thy servant, I pray thee, speak a word in my lord’s ears, and let not thy anger burn against thy servant: for thou art even as Par῾o.

And Judah drew near to him and he said: I entreat you, my lord, let your servant speak a word [that will enter] in the ears of my lord. And let not your wrath burn against your servant [— whence we may infer that he spoke "strong words" to him], for you are [as eminent in my eyes] as Pharaoh.

My master asked his servants, saying, Do you have a father or brother?

My lord asked his servants, saying, Have you a father, or a brother?

My lord asked his servants: Do you have a father or a brother? [From the very beginning you were plotting against us. Why did you ask all these questions? Were we asking for your daughter in marriage? Or were you asking for our sister?]

We said to my master, We have a father who is old, and a young child of his old age. His brother is dead, and he alone survives of his mother, and his father loves him.

And we said to my lord, We have a father, an old man, and a child of his old age, a little one; and his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother, and his father loves him.

And [in spite of this, we concealed nothing from you, but] we said to my lord: We have an old father and a small child of his old age, and his brother died [(Judah lying here out of fear that he be told to bring him too)], and he alone was left to his mother, [Benjamin having no other brother from that mother], and his father loves him.

You said to your servants, Bring him down to me, that I may set my eyes on him.

And thou didst say to thy servants, Bring him down to me, that I may set my eyes upon him.

And you said to your servants: Bring him down to me that I may set my eye upon him.

We said to my master, the lad cannot leave his father, for if he left his father, he would die.

And we said to my lord, The lad cannot leave his father: for if he should leave his father, his father would die.

And we said to my lord: The youth will not be able to leave his father, for if he leaves his father he may die [on the road (as his mother did)].

You [then] said to your servants, If your youngest brother does not come down with you, you shall not see my face again.

And thou didst say to thy servants, Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you shall see my face no more.

And you said to your servants: If your younger brother does not come down with you, you shall see my face no more.

When we went to your servant, my father, we told him of my master’s words.

And it came to pass when we came up to thy servant my father, we told him the words of my lord.

And it was, when we went up to your servant, my father, and we told him the words of my lord,

Our father said, Go back and buy us a little food.

And our father said, Go back, and buy us a little food.

that our father said: Return, buy for us a little food.

We said, We cannot go down. If our youngest brother is with us, we will go down, for we cannot see the man’s face, unless our youngest brother is with us.

And we said, We cannot go down: if our youngest brother be with us, then will we go down: for we may not see the man’s face, unless our youngest brother is with us.

And we said: We cannot go down. If our younger brother is with us then we will go down. For we will not be able to see the man's face if our younger brother is not with us.

Your servant, my father said to us, You know that my wife [Rochel] bore me two sons.

And thy servant my father said to us, You know that my wife bore me two sons:

And your servant, my father, said to us: You know that my wife (Rachel) bore me two sons.

One has [already] left me, and I said, surely he is torn to pieces. I have not seen him until now.

and the one went out from me, and I said, Surely he is torn in pieces; and I saw him not since:

And the one went from me. And I said: Surely, he has been torn. And I have not seen him until now.

If you take this one also away from me, and misfortune befall him, you will bring my white head down to the grave in evil.

and if you take this also from me, and mischief befall him, you shall bring down my grey hairs with sorrow to She᾽ol.

And if you take this one, too, from me, then a mishap will befall him, [for "Satan prosecutes in time of danger"], and you will bring down my hoary head with evil to the grave. [Benjamin is my consolation for Rachel and Joseph. If he dies, it is as if they all died in one day.]

And now, when I come to your servant, my father, and the lad is not with us; his soul is bound up with the lad’s soul.

Now therefore when I come to thy servant my father, and the lad is not with us; seeing that his life is bound up in the lad’s life;

And now, if I come to your servant, my father, and the youth is not with us, and his soul is bound up with his soul —

When he sees that the lad is not [with us], he will die. Your servants will have brought down the white head of your servant, our father, to the grave in sorrow.

it shall come to pass, when he sees that the lad is not with us, that he will die: and thy servants shall bring down the grey hairs of thy servant our father with sorrow to She᾽ol.

Then it shall be, if he sees that the youth is not (with us), he will die, and your servants will have brought down the hoary head of your servant, our father, with sorrow to the grave.

For your servant became surety for the lad, to my father, saying, If I do not bring him to you, I will have sinned to my father for all time.

For thy servant became surety for the lad to my father, saying, If I bring him not to thee, then I shall have sinned to my father for ever.

[And I am more importunate in this than my other brothers], for your servant has gone surety for the youth to my father, saying: If I do not bring him back to you, then I will have sinned against my father all of the days, [to be cut off in both worlds].

And now, let your servant remain as a slave to my master instead of the lad. Let the lad go up with his brothers.

Now therefore, I pray thee, let thy servant remain instead of the lad a bondman to my lord; and let the lad go up with his brothers.

And now, let your servant stay, I pray you, instead of the youth as a servant to my lord, and let the youth go up with his brothers.

For how shall I go up to my father when the lad is not with me; lest I see the evil that would befall my father.

For how shall I go up to my father, and the lad be not with me? lest I see the evil that shall come on my father.

For how can I go up to my father if the youth is not with me — lest I see the evil that shall befall my father.
