Elohim blessed Noach and his sons. He said to them, Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.
And God blessed Noaĥ and his sons, and said to them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth.
And G-d blessed Noach and his sons, and He said to them: Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.
Your fear and terror will be upon every wild beast of the earth, and upon every bird in the heavens. All that creeps on the ground, and all the fish of the sea, are given into your hands.
And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth, and upon every bird of the air, upon all that moves upon the earth, and upon all the fishes of the sea; into your hand are they delivered.
And your dread and your awe shall be upon all the animals of the earth and on all the birds of the heaven, on all that moves upon the earth and on all the fish of the sea; into your hand are they given.
Every moving creature that lives, shall be yours for food; like the green vegetation [which I gave previously] I have [now] given you everything [for food].
Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you; even as the green herb have I given you all things.
Every creeping thing that lives shall be for you to eat. As green herbs [which alone, I permitted to Adam], to you have I given all.
Nevertheless, flesh with its lifeblood, you shall not eat.
But flesh with its life, which is its blood, you shall not eat.
Only, you shall not eat flesh with its life [(the ban on ever min hachai — flesh torn from a living animal)] — blood [(the ban on blood from a living animal)].
However, of the blood of your souls, I will demand an account; from the hand of every beast will I demand it. From the hand of man, even from the hand of man’s own brother, will I demand an account of man’s soul.
And surely your blood of your lives will I require; at the hand of every beast will I require it, and at the hand of man; at the hand of every man’s brother will I require the life of man.
But [though I have permitted you to take the life of a beast], I shall require your blood [(if you take your life)] for your lives [even if you do not spill blood, (e.g., strangulation)]. From the hand of every animal will I [now] require it, [the men of the generation of the flood having been consigned as prey to the beasts], and from the hand of man [one who kills wilfully, in the absence of witnesses], from the hand of a man [against one he loves as] his brother, [whom he kills unwittingly, in the absence of witnesses to make him liable to exile, and in the absence of contrition and penance on his part], I shall require the life of a man.
He who spills the blood of man, through man shall his blood be spilled, for in the image of Elohim, He made man.
Whoso sheds man’s blood by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made He man.
One who spills the blood of man [in the presence of witnesses], by man shall his blood be spilled. [Why so?] For in the image of G-d did He make man.
וְאַתֶּ֖ם פְּר֣וּ וּרְב֑וּ שִׁרְצ֥וּ בָאָ֖רֶץ וּרְבוּ־בָֽהּ׃{ס}
And now be fruitful and multiply, spread throughout the earth and multiply on it.
And as for you, be fruitful, and multiply; bring forth abundantly in the earth, and multiply in it.
And you, be fruitful and multiply, [(this being stated originally (9:1) as a blessing, and here, as a command)], teem in the earth and increase in it.
Elohim said to Noach and to his sons with him, saying,
And God spoke to Noaĥ, and to his sons with him, saying,
And G-d said to Noach and to his sons with him, saying:
Behold, I am making a covenant with you and with your offspring after you.
And behold, I establish My covenant with you, and with your seed after you;
And I, behold, [I concur with you in your apprehension of begetting children (with the threat of another deluge looming over them) and] I am establishing My covenant with you [not to destroy you], and with your seed after you.
And with every living creature that is with you, with the birds, the animals, and all the beasts of the earth with you, all who departed from the ark, including every living creature on earth.
and with every living creature that is with you, of the birds, of the cattle, and of every beast of the earth with you; from all that came out of the ark, to every beast of the earth.
And with all living things that are with you, of bird and beast, and of all the animals of the earth that are ["compatible"] with you, of all that leave the ark [including reptiles and creeping things], of all the animals of the earth [including mazikkin ("injurers")].
I will keep My covenant with you, that never again will all flesh be cut off by flood waters, never again will flood waters destroy the earth.
And I will establish My covenant with you; neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of the flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth.
And I will confirm [through the sign of the rainbow] My covenant with you, and no flesh will again be cut off by the waters of the deluge, and there will not again be a deluge to destroy the earth.
Elohim said, This is the sign of the covenant that I pledge between Myself and you, and between every living creature that is with you, for the generations of all time.
And God said, This is the token of the covenant which I make between Me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations:
And G-d said: This is the sign of the covenant that I give between Me and you and between every living soul that is with you for the generations [(doroth, written defective, some generations of righteous men not requiring a sign)] forever.
I have set My [rain] bow in the clouds, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between Myself and the earth.
I have set My bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between Me and the earth.
My bow have I set in the cloud, and it shall be a sign of a covenant between Me and the earth.
At a time when I bring clouds over the earth, the [rain] bow will be seen in the clouds.
And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the cloud:
And it will be, when I "cloud a cloud" upon the earth [i.e., when it enters My mind to bring darkness and destruction to the world], then the bow will be seen in the cloud.
I shall remember My covenant that is between Myself and you, and between every living soul in all flesh, that never again will flood waters destroy all flesh.
and I will remember My covenant, which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh.
And I shall remember My covenant between Me and you and between every living thing of all flesh, and the waters will no more be a deluge to destroy all flesh.
The [rain]bow shall be in the clouds, and I will see it to remember the eternal covenant between Elohim and between every living soul that is in all flesh that is on the earth.
And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth.
And the bow will be in the cloud and I will see it, to remember the eternal covenant between G-d [Elokim — the Attribute of Justice] and between every living soul in all flesh upon the earth.
וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֱלֹהִ֖ים אֶל־נֹ֑חַ זֹ֤את אֽוֹת־הַבְּרִית֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר הֲקִמֹ֔תִי בֵּינִ֕י וּבֵ֥ין כׇּל־בָּשָׂ֖ר אֲשֶׁ֥ר עַל־הָאָֽרֶץ׃{פ}
Elohim said to Noach, This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between Myself and between all flesh that is on the earth.
And God said to Noaĥ, This is the token of the covenant, which I have established between Me and all flesh that is upon the earth.
And G-d said to Noach [showing him the bow]: This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between Me and between all flesh that is on the earth.
The sons of Noach, who went out of the ark were Sheim, Yafes and Cham; Cham was the father of Canaan.
And the sons of Noaĥ, that went out of the ark, were Shem, and Ḥam, and Yefet: and Ḥam is the father of Kena῾an.
And the sons of Noach who went out of the ark were Shem, Cham, and Yefeth; and Cham was the father of Canaan [(the relationship being mentioned here to shed light on what is to follow vis-à-vis the cursing of Cham and Canaan)].
These three were the sons of Noach, and from these, the whole world developed.
These are the three sons of Noaĥ: and of them was the whole earth overspread.
These three are the sons of Noach, and from these did the whole earth spread.
Noach began to be a man of the soil and he planted a vineyard.
And Noaĥ began to be a husbandman, and he planted a vineyard:
And Noach profaned himself, the lord of the ground, and he planted a vineyard. [He should have planted something else first.]
He drank of the wine and was intoxicated. He [then] uncovered himself in his tent.
And he drank of the wine, and was drunk; and he was uncovered within his tent.
And he drank from the wine and he was inebriated and he uncovered himself in the midst of his tent [ahalo, written "ahalah," an allusion to the ten tribes, called by the name of Shomron (Ahalah), who were exiled because of overindulgence in wine].
Cham the father of Canaan saw the nakedness of his father, and told it to his brothers [who were] Outside.
And Ḥam, the father of Kena῾an saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brethren outside.
And Cham the father of Canaan saw [(Some say Canaan saw and reported it to his father)] the nakedness of his father [(Some say that he castrated him; others, that he sodomized him)], and he told his two brothers outside.
Sheim and Yafes took the cloak, placed it on their shoulders, and walked backwards, covering the nakedness of their father. They faced away from him, and did not see the nakedness of their father.
And Shem and Yefet took the garment, and laid it upon both their shoulders, and went backward, and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were backward, and they saw not their father’s nakedness.
And Shem took [(Shem, exerting himself on behalf of the mitzvah more than Yefeth did (for which reason his descendants merited the mitzvah of tzitzith)] and Yefeth, the garment [(for which reason he merited burial for his descendants (Ezekiel 39:11), (the descendants of Cham, who shamed his father, being led in nakedness into exile (Isaiah 20:4)], and they placed it on the shoulders of both and they walked backwards, and they covered the nakedness of their father, and their faces were [(kept)] turned backwards [when they drew near him to cover him], and the nakedness of their father they did not see.
Noach awoke from his wine [induced sleep] and he realized what had been done to him by his youngest son.
And Noaĥ awoke from his wine, and knew what his younger son had done to him.
And Noach awoke from his wine and he knew what his "small" [i.e., unworthy, despicable] son had done to him.
He said, Cursed is Canaan. A slave of slaves shall he be to his brothers.
And he said, Cursed be Kena῾an; a servant of servants shall he be to his brethren.
And he said: Cursed is Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be to his brothers.
He then said, Blessed is Adonoy, God of Sheim; may Canaan be his slave.
And he said, Blessed be the Lord God of Shem; and Kena῾an shall be his servant.
And he said: Blessed is the L-rd, the G-d of Shem, [who is destined to keep His promise to his (Shem's) seed and give them the land of Canaan], and Canaan will be a servant to him.
Elohim will enlarge Yefes, but He will dwell in the tents of Sheim, and Canaan will be their slave.
God shall enlarge Yefet, and he shall dwell in the tents of Shem; and Kena῾an shall be his servant.
G-d will "expand" Yefeth, but He will dwell in the tents of Shem, and Canaan will be a servant unto him. [Even after the sons of Shem are exiled, servants will be sold to them from the sons of Canaan.]
After the Flood, Noach lived three hundred and fifty years.
And Noaĥ lived after the flood three hundred and fifty years.
And Noach lived after the flood three hundred and fifty years.
וַיִּֽהְיוּ֙¹ כׇּל־יְמֵי־נֹ֔חַ תְּשַׁ֤ע מֵאוֹת֙ שָׁנָ֔ה וַחֲמִשִּׁ֖ים שָׁנָ֑ה וַיָּמֹֽת׃{פ}
