Then all Yisra᾽el gathered themselves to David to Ḥevron, saying, Behold, we are thy bone and thy flesh.
And all of Israel gathered together to David, to Chevron, saying: Behold, we are your bone and flesh.
And moreover in time past, even when Sha᾽ul was king, thou wast he who didst lead out Yisra᾽el and bring them in: and the Lord thy God said to thee, Thou shalt be shepherd over my people Yisra᾽el, and thou shalt be ruler over my people Yisra᾽el.
Also of yore, also when Saul was king, it was you who led Israel out and brought them in. And the L-rd said to you: You shall graze My people Israel, and you shall be a leader over Israel.
וַ֠יָּבֹ֠אוּ כׇּל־זִקְנֵ֨י יִשְׂרָאֵ֤ל אֶל־הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ חֶבְר֔וֹנָה וַיִּכְרֹת֩ לָהֶ֨ם דָּוִ֥יד בְּרִ֛ית בְּחֶבְר֖וֹן לִפְנֵ֣י יְהֹוָ֑ה וַיִּמְשְׁח֨וּ אֶת־דָּוִ֤יד לְמֶ֙לֶךְ֙ עַל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל כִּדְבַ֥ר יְהֹוָ֖ה בְּיַד־שְׁמוּאֵֽל׃{ס}
Therefore all the elders of Yisra᾽el came to the king to Ḥevron; and David made a covenant with them in Ḥevron before the Lord; and they anointed David king over Yisra᾽el, according to the word of the Lord by Shemu᾽el.
And all the elders of Israel came to the king in Chevron and David made a covenant with them in Chevron before the L-rd. And they anointed David as king over Israel, according to the word of the L-rd by Samuel.
And David and all Yisra᾽el went to Yerushalayim, which is Yevus; where the Yevusi were, the inhabitants of the land.
And David and all of Israel went to Jerusalem — Yevus — where the Yevusites were, the inhabitants of the land.
And the inhabitants of Yevus said to David, Thou shalt not come here. Nevertheless David took the stronghold of Żiyyon, which is the city of David.
And the inhabitants of Yevus said to David: You will not come here. And David took [(Yevus)] Metzudath Tziyon [("the stronghold of Zion")], which is the city of David.
And David said, Whoever smites the Yevusi first shall be chief and captain. So Yo᾽av the son of Żeruya went first up, and became the chief.
And David said: Whoever smites the Yevusites, [going up] first, will be chief and head. And Yoav the son of Tzeruyah went up first, and he became the head.
And David dwelt in the stronghold; therefore they called it the city of David.
And David dwelt in the stronghold, wherefore they called it "the city of David."
And he built the city round about, even from the Millo round about: and Yo᾽av repaired the rest of the city.
And he built the city roundabout the milo [(a low-walled enclosure encircling the stronghold)] and within it. And Yoav restored the rest of the city.
וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ דָּוִ֖יד הָל֣וֹךְ וְגָד֑וֹל וַיהֹוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת עִמּֽוֹ׃{פ}
So David grew greater and greater: for the Lord of hosts was with him.
And David grew ever greater, and the L-rd of hosts was with him.
וְאֵ֨לֶּה רָאשֵׁ֤י הַגִּבֹּרִים֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר לְדָוִ֔יד הַמִּתְחַזְּקִ֨ים עִמּ֧וֹ בְמַלְכוּת֛וֹ עִם־כׇּל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לְהַמְלִיכ֑וֹ כִּדְבַ֥ר יְהֹוָ֖ה עַל־יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃{ס}
These also are the chiefs of the mighty men whom David had, who held fast to him in his kingdom, together with all Yisra᾽el, to make him king, according to the word of the Lord concerning Yisra᾽el.
And these are the heads of David's stalwarts, who championed his kingdom, to make him king, according to the word of the L-rd concerning Israel.
And this is the number of the mighty men whom David had; Yoshov῾am, the son of Ḥakhmoni, the chief of the captains: he swung his spear over three hundred slain at one time.
And these are the number of David's stalwarts [viz. II Samuel 23:8-39]: Yashavam the son of Chachmoni, head of the three. He would brandish his spear [(to fight further)] over three hundred that he had slain at one time.
And after him was El῾azar the son of Dodo, the Aĥoĥite, who was one of the three mighty men.
And after him, Elazar the son of Dodo the Achohite, among the three [choicest] of the mighty.
He was with David at Pas-dammim, and there the Pelishtim were gathered together to battle, where there was a plot of ground full of barley; and the people fled from before the Pelishtim.
He was with David in Pas-damim when the Philistines were gathered there for war. And there was a field-plot (there) full of barley. (And the people had fled from the Philistines).
And they set themselves in the midst of that plot, and delivered it, and slew the Pelishtim; and the Lord saved them by a great deliverance.
And they [(he and his men)] stood in the midst of the plot and they saved it and they smote the Philistines. And the L-rd wrought a great salvation.
Now three of the thirty captains went down to the rock to David, into the cave of ῾Adullam; and the host of the Pelishtim encamped in the valley of Refa᾽im.
And there went down three of the chief officers upon the rock to David, to the cave of Adulam. And a troop of Philistines were encamped in the valley of Refaim.
And David was then in the stronghold, and the garrison of the Pelishtim was then at Bet-leĥem.
And David was then in the stronghold, and a garrison of the Philistines was then in Beth-lechem [(having been sent there from the valley of Refaim)].
And David longed, and said, Oh that someone would give me water of the well of Bet-leĥem, that is by the gate, to drink!
And David lusted [to drink] and he said: Would that someone gave me water to drink from the well of Beth-lechem near the gate!
And those three broke through the host of the Pelishtim, and drew water out of the well of Bet-leĥem, that was by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David: but David would not drink of it, but poured it out to the Lord,
And the three broke through the camp of the Philistines and drew water from the well of Beth-lechem near the gate. And they carried it and brought it to David. And David did not want to drink it, and he poured it out before the L-rd.
and he said, far be it from me before my God, that I should do this thing: shall I drink the blood of these men that have put their lives in jeopardy? for with the jeopardy of their lives have they brought it. Therefore he would not drink it. These things did these three mightiest.
And he said: G d forbid that I should do this. Shall I drink [the blood] of these men with their lives? For at [the risk of] their lives did they bring it! And he did not want to drink it. These (things) were done by the three warriors.
And Avshay the brother of Yo᾽av, he was chief among the three: and he swung his spear over three hundred slain, and had a name among the three.
And Avishai the brother of Yoav was the head of the three. He would brandish his spear [(to fight further)] over three hundred that he had slain, and he had a name among the three.
מִן־הַשְּׁלוֹשָׁ֤ה בַשְּׁנַ֙יִם֙ נִכְבָּ֔ד וַיְהִ֥י לָהֶ֖ם לְשָׂ֑ר וְעַד־הַשְּׁלוֹשָׁ֖ה לֹא־בָֽא׃{ס}
Of the three in the second rank he was most honourable; therefore he was their captain: but he attained not to the first three.
Of the three he was more honored than the two (others), and he was their leader, but to the [first] three [viz. 11] he did not approach.
Benaya the son of Yehoyada, the son of a valiant man of Qavże᾽el, who had done many acts; he slew two lionhearted men of Mo᾽av: and he went down and slew a lion in a pit in a time of snow.
(And) Benayah the son of Yehoyada, a man of valor, of many feats, of Kavtze'el. He smote the two heroes of Moav. And he went down and smote the lion in the midst of the pit on a day of snow.
And he slew a Miżrian man, a man of great stature, five cubits high; and in the Miżrian’s hand was a spear like a weaver’s beam; and he went down to him with a staff, and plucked the spear out of the Miżrian’s hand, and slew him with his own spear.
And he smote the Egyptian, a man of (great) stature, five [cubits] by the [royal] cubit. And in the Egyptian's hand was a spear like a weaver's beam. And he went down to him with a staff, snatched the spear from the Egyptian's hand, and slew him with his (own) spear.
These things Benayahu the son of Yehoyada did, and he had a name among the three mighty ones.
These (things) were done by Benayahu the son of Yehoyada, and he had a name among the three warriors.
מִן־הַשְּׁלוֹשִׁ֗ים הִנּ֤וֹ נִכְבָּד֙ ה֔וּא וְאֶל־הַשְּׁלֹשָׁ֖ה לֹא־בָ֑א וַיְשִׂימֵ֥הוּ דָוִ֖יד עַל־מִשְׁמַעְתּֽוֹ׃{ס}
Behold, he was renowned among the thirty, but did not attain to the first three: and David set him over his guard.
Of the officers he was most honored, but he did not approach the three. And David placed him at his command.
וְגִבּוֹרֵ֖י הַחֲיָלִ֑ים עֲשָׂהאֵל֙ אֲחִ֣י יוֹאָ֔ב{ס}אֶלְחָנָ֥ן בֶּן־דּוֹד֖וֹ מִבֵּ֥ית לָֽחֶם׃{ס}
