Amażyahu was twenty five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty nine years in Yerushalayim. And his mother’s name was Yeho῾addan of Yerushalayim.
Amatzyahu was twenty-five years old when he [began] to reign, and he reigned for twenty-five years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Yehoadan of Jerusalem.
And he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, but not with a perfect heart.
And he did what was just in the eyes of the L rd, but not with a whole heart.
Now it came to pass, when the kingdom was established to him, that he slew his servants who had killed the king his father.
And it was, when the kingdom became secure with him, that he smote his servants, who had smitten the king, his father.
But he did not slay their children, but did as it is written in the Tora, in the book of Moshe, where the Lord commanded, saying, Fathers shall not die for children, nor shall children die for fathers, but every man shall die for his own sin.
But their sons he did not put to death, as it is written in the Torah of Moses that the L rd commanded, saying [Deuteronomy 24:16]: "Fathers shall not be put to death because of the sons, and sons shall not be put to death because of the fathers, but each man shall be put to death for his (own) sin."
Moreover Amażyahu gathered Yehuda together, and made them captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, according to the houses of their fathers, throughout all Yehuda and Binyamin: and he numbered them from twenty years old and upwards, and found them three hundred thousand choice men, able to go out to war, that could handle spear and shield.
And Amatzyahu gathered Judah, and he stood them up by the fathers' houses, by the officers of thousands and the officers of hundreds, for all of Judah and Benjamin. And he counted them from twenty years old and above, and he found them to be three hundred thousand select (men), wielding spear and shield.
He hired also a hundred thousand mighty men at arms out of Yisra᾽el for a hundred talents of silver.
And he hired from Israel one hundred thousand warriors for a hundred talents of silver.
But there came a man of God to him, saying, O king, let not the army of Yisra᾽el go with thee; for the Lord is not with Yisra᾽el, with all these children of Efrayim.
And a man of G d came to him and said: O king, let the army of Israel not come with you. For the L rd is not with Israel, (with) all the sons of Ephraim.
But if thou wilt go, and even if thou engage valiantly in the battle: God shall make thee fall before the enemy: for God has power to help, and to cast down.
For if you do come (with them), you may strengthen yourself for war, (but) G d will cause you to stumble before the foe. For there is power in G d to help or to hinder.
And Amażyahu said to the man of God, But what shall we do for the hundred talents which I have given to the army of Yisra᾽el? And the man of God answered, The Lord is able to give thee much more than this.
And Amatzyahu said to the man of G d: But what is to be done about the hundred talents that I have given for the troop of Israel? And the man of G d said: The L rd has the power to give you much more than this.
וַיַּבְדִּילֵ֣ם אֲמַצְיָ֗הוּ לְהַגְּדוּד֙ אֲשֶׁר־בָּ֤א אֵלָיו֙ מֵאֶפְרַ֔יִם לָלֶ֖כֶת לִמְקוֹמָ֑ם וַיִּ֨חַר אַפָּ֤ם מְאֹד֙ בִּֽיהוּדָ֔ה וַיָּשׁ֥וּבוּ לִמְקוֹמָ֖ם בׇּחֳרִי־אָֽף׃{ס}
Then Amażyahu separated them, namely that army that was come to him out of Efrayim, and bade them go home again: so that their anger burned strongly against Yehuda, and they returned home in great anger.
And Amatzyahu separated the troop that had come to him from Ephraim to return to their place. And their wrath burned greatly against Judah, and they returned to their places in burning wrath.
And Amażyahu strengthened himself, and led his people, and went to the valley of salt, and smote ten thousand of the children of Se῾ir.
And Amatzyahu strengthened himself and led his people. And he went to the valley of Salt, and he smote the sons of Seir, ten thousand.
And another ten thousand did the children of Yehuda carry away alive captive, and brought them to the top of the rock, and they cast them down from the top of the rock, so that they all were broken in pieces.
And the sons of Judah took captive ten thousand, alive. And they brought them to the peak of the rock, and they cast them down from the peak of the rock, and they were all split.
וּבְנֵ֣י הַגְּד֗וּד אֲשֶׁ֨ר הֵשִׁ֤יב אֲמַצְיָ֙הוּ֙ מִלֶּ֤כֶת עִמּוֹ֙ לַמִּלְחָמָ֔ה וַֽיִּפְשְׁטוּ֙ בְּעָרֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֔ה מִשֹּׁמְר֖וֹן וְעַד־בֵּ֣ית חוֹר֑וֹן וַיַּכּ֤וּ מֵהֶם֙ שְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת אֲלָפִ֔ים וַיָּבֹ֖זּוּ בִּזָּ֥ה רַבָּֽה׃{פ}
But the soldiers of the army which Amażyahu sent back, so that they should not go with him to battle, fell upon the cities of Yehuda, from Shomeron as far as Bet-ĥoron, and smote three thousand of them, and took much spoil.
Now it came to pass, after Amażyahu was come from the slaughter of the Adomim, that he brought the gods of the children of Se῾ir, and set them up to be his gods, and prostrated himself before them, and burned incense to them.
And it was, after Amatzyahu came back from smiting the Edomites, that he brought back the gods of the sons of Seir, and he set them up for himself as gods, and to them did he bow down, and to them did he burn incense.
So that the anger of the Lord burned against Amażyahu, and he sent to him a prophet, who said to him, Why hast thou sought after the gods of the people, who could not deliver their own people out of thy hand?
And the wrath of the L rd burned against Amatzyahu, and he sent him a prophet, who said to him: Why have you sought out the gods of the people, who could not save their people from your hand!
וַיְהִ֣י**׀** בְּדַבְּר֣וֹ אֵלָ֗יו וַיֹּ֤אמֶר לוֹ֙ הַלְיוֹעֵ֤ץ לַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ נְתַנּ֔וּךָ חֲדַל־לְךָ֖ לָ֣מָּה יַכּ֑וּךָ וַיֶּחְדַּ֣ל הַנָּבִ֗יא וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ יָדַ֗עְתִּי כִּֽי־יָעַ֤ץ אֱלֹהִים֙ לְהַשְׁחִיתֶ֔ךָ כִּֽי־עָשִׂ֣יתָ זֹּ֔את וְלֹ֥א שָׁמַ֖עְתָּ לַעֲצָתִֽי׃{פ}
And it came to pass, as he talked with him, that the king said to him, Have we made thee of the king’s counsel? forbear; why shouldst thou be smitten? Then the prophet ceased, and said, I know that God has determined to destroy thee, because thou hast done this, and hast not hearkened to my counsel.
And it was, when he spoke to him that he said to him: Have we made you an adviser to the king? Forbear! Why should they smite you? And the prophet forbore, and he said: I know that the L rd has counseled to destroy you because you have done this and not heeded my counsel.
Then Amażyahu king of Yehuda took advice, and sent to Yo᾽ash, the son of Yeho᾽aĥaz, the son of Yehu, king of Yisra᾽el, saying, Come, let us see one another in the face.
And Amatzyahu king of Judah took counsel and sent to Yoash son of Yehoachaz son of Yehu king of Israel, saying: Come, let us confront each other [(in war)].
And Yo᾽ash king of Yisra᾽el sent to Amażyahu king of Yehuda, saying, The thistle that was in the Levanon sent to the cedar that was in the Levanon, saying, Give thy daughter to my son to wife: and there passed by a wild beast that was in the Levanon, and trampled down the thistle.
And Yoash, king of Israel, sent to Amatzyahu, king of Judah, saying: The thornbush in the Levanon [(Shechem, the son of Chamor)] sent to the cedar in the Levanon [(Jacob)], saying: Give your daughter to my son as a wife. And the animals of the Levanon passed by and trod down the thornbush [(i.e., the sons of Jacob despoiled the slain [(You, too, in your haughtiness, will be trodden down by my cohorts])].
Thou sayst, Lo, thou hast smitten Edom; and thy heart has lifted thee up to boast: stay now at home; why shouldst thou meddle with evil, that thou shouldst fall, thou, and Yehuda with thee?
You said that, behold, you had smitten Edom, and your heart lifted you [in pride] to gain [more] glory. (But) now, sit in your house. Why should you stir up evil and fall, you and Judah with you?
But Amażyahu would not hear; for it came of God, that he might deliver them into the hand of their enemies, because they sought after the gods of Edom.
But Amatzyahu did not pay heed, for it was from G d [i.e., it was His design], in order to deliver them [(Amatzyah and his people)] into the hand [(of Israel)], for they had sought out the gods of Edom.
So Yo᾽ash the king of Yisra᾽el went up; so they looked one another in the face, both he and Amażyahu king of Yehuda, at Bet-shemesh, which belongs to Yehuda.
And Yoash king of Israel went up and they confronted each other, he and Amatzyahu king of Judah in Beth-shemesh of Judah.
And Yehuda was beaten before Yisra᾽el, and they fled every man to his tent.
And Judah was smitten before Israel, and they fled, each to his tent.
And Yo᾽ash the king of Yisra᾽el took Amażyahu king of Yehuda, the son of Yo᾽ash, the son of Yeho᾽aĥaz, at Bet-shemesh, and brought him to Yerushalayim, and broke down the wall of Yerushalayim from the gate of Efrayim to the corner gate, four hundred cubits.
And Amatzyahu the king of Judah, the son of Yoash the son of Yehoachaz, was seized by Yoash king of Israel in Beth-shemesh. And he brought him to Jerusalem and he breached the wall of Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim until the Corner gate, four hundred cubits.
וְכׇֽל־הַזָּהָ֣ב וְהַכֶּ֡סֶף וְאֵ֣ת כׇּל־הַ֠כֵּלִ֠ים הַנִּמְצְאִ֨ים בְּבֵית־הָאֱלֹהִ֜ים עִם־עֹבֵ֣ד אֱד֗וֹם וְאֶת־אֽוֹצְרוֹת֙ בֵּ֣ית הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וְאֵ֖ת בְּנֵ֣י הַתַּעֲרֻב֑וֹת וַיָּ֖שׇׁב שֹׁמְרֽוֹן׃{פ}
And he took all the gold and the silver, and all the vessels that were found in the house of God with ῾Oved-edom, and the treasures of the king’s house, together with the hostages, and returned to Shomeron.
[And he took] all the gold and the silver and all the vessels found in the house of G d with [i.e., under the care of] Oved-edom and [in] the treasuries of the king's house and the hostage-sons [(the sons of the lords held hostage as security against their fathers' rebelling against the king)], and he returned to Shomron.
And Amażyahu the son of Yo᾽ash king of Yehuda lived after the death of Yo᾽ash son of Yeho᾽aĥaz king of Yisra᾽el fifteen years.
And Amatzyahu the son of Yoash king of Judah lived for fifteen years after the death of Yoash the son of Yehoachaz king of Israel.
Now the rest of the acts of Amażyahu, first and last, behold, are they not written in the book of the kings of Yehuda and Yisra᾽el?
And the rest of the events (of the reign) of Amatzyahu, the earlier and the later, are they not written in the book [of the chronicles] of the kings of Judah and Israel.
Now after the time that Amażyahu turned away from following the Lord they made a conspiracy against him in Yerushalayim; and he fled to Lakhish: but they sent to Lakhish after him, and slew him there.
And from the time that Amatzyahu turned away from the L rd, they formed a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem. And he fled to Lachish, and they sent after him to Lachish, and they put him to death there.
And they brought him upon horses, and buried him with his fathers in the city of Yehuda.
And they bore him upon the horses and they buried him with his fathers in the city of Judah.
