Yoshiyyahu was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned in Yerushalayim for thirty one years.
Yoshiyahu was eight years old when he [began] to reign, and he reigned for thirty-one years in Jerusalem.
And he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, and followed in the ways of David his father, declining neither to the right hand, nor to the left.
And he did what was just in the eyes of the L rd, and he went in the ways of David his father, not turning right or left.
For in the eighth year of his reign, while he was still young, he began to seek after the God of David his father: and in the twelfth year he began to purge Yehuda and Yerushalayim of the high places, and the asherim, and the carved idols, and the molten images.
And in his eighth year, when he became king, when yet a youth, he began to seek out the G d of David his father. And in his twelfth year, he began to purge Judah and Jerusalem of the mounds and the asherim and the graven images and the molten images.
And they broke down the altars of the Be῾alim in his presence; and the sun images, that were on high above them, he cut down; and the asherim, and the carved idols, and the molten images, he broke in pieces, and made dust of them, and strewed it upon the graves of those who had sacrificed to them.
And they razed before him the altars of the ba'alim; and the sun images above them he cut down. And the asherim and the graven images and the molten images he broke and ground down, and he cast [(the grindings)] on the face of the graves of those who had sacrificed to them [viz. I Kings 13:2].
And he burnt the bones of the priests upon their altars, and cleansed Yehuda and Yerushalayim.
And the bones of [(dead idolatrous)] priests he burned upon their altars, and he purged Judah and Jerusalem.
And so he did in the cities of Menashshe, and Efrayim, and Shim῾on even to Naftali, in their ruins round about.
And (they did the same) in the cities of Menasheh and Ephraim and Shimon, until Naftali, (which they razed) with their mattocks roundabout.
וַיְנַתֵּ֣ץ אֶת־הַֽמִּזְבְּח֗וֹת וְאֶת־הָאֲשֵׁרִ֤ים וְהַפְּסִלִים֙ כִּתַּ֣ת לְהֵדַ֔ק וְכׇל־הַחַמָּנִ֥ים גִּדַּ֖ע בְּכׇל־אֶ֣רֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיָּ֖שׇׁב לִירוּשָׁלָֽ͏ִם׃{פ}
And when he had broken down the altars and the asherim, and had beaten the carved idols into dust, and cut down all the sun images throughout all the land of Yisra᾽el, he returned to Yerushalayim.
And he razed the altars and the asherim; and the graven images he crushed into dust. And all the sun images he cut down in all the land of Israel, and he returned to Jerusalem.
Now in the eighteenth year of his reign, when he had purged the land, and the house, he sent Shafan the son of Ażalyahu, and Ma῾aseyahu the governor of the city, and Yo᾽aĥ the son of Yo᾽aĥaz the recorder, to repair the house of the Lord his God.
And in the eighteenth year of his reign, having cleansed the land and the Temple, he sent Shafan the son of Atzalyahu, Ma'aseyahu, the governor of the city, and Yoach the son of Yoachaz the recorder to strengthen the house of the L rd his G d.
And when they came to Ḥilqiyyahu the high priest, they delivered the money that was brought into the house of God, which the Levites who kept the doors had gathered from the hand of Menashshe and Efrayim, and from all the remnant of Yisra᾽el, and from all Yehuda and Binyamin; and they returned to Yerushalayim.
And they came to Chilkiyahu, the high-priest, and they gave him the money brought to the house of G d, collected by the Levites, the gatekeepers, from Menasheh and Ephraim, and from all the remnant of Israel, and from all of Judah and Benjamin, and they returned to Jerusalem.
And they put it in the hand of the workmen who had the oversight of the house of the Lord, and they gave it to the workmen who were employed in the house of the Lord, to repair and mend the house:
And they gave it to the [treasurers] over the doers of the work appointed in the house of the L rd, and they gave it to the workers in the house of the L rd to seek out and repair [the breaches in] the house.
וַֽיִּתְּנ֗וּ לֶחָֽרָשִׁים֙ וְלַבֹּנִ֔ים לִקְנוֹת֙ אַבְנֵ֣י מַחְצֵ֔ב וְעֵצִ֖ים לַֽמְחַבְּר֑וֹת וּלְקָרוֹת֙ אֶת־הַבָּ֣תִּ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר הִשְׁחִ֖יתוּ מַלְכֵ֥י יְהוּדָֽה׃{ס}
to the carpenters and builders they give it, to buy hewn stone, and timber for couplings, and to make beams for the houses which the kings of Yehuda had destroyed.
And they gave it to the carpenters and the builders to buy hewn stone and wood for the couplings and to roof the houses which the kings of Judah had destroyed.
And the men did the work faithfully: and their overseers were Yaĥat and ῾Ovadyahu the Levites, of the sons of Merari; and Zekharya and Meshullam, of the sons of the Qehatim, to supervise it; and other of the Levites, all who had skill in instruments of music.
And the men did their work in good faith. And appointed over them were Yachath and Ovadyahu the Levites of the sons of Merari and Zecharyah and Meshulam of the sons of the Kehothites, to supervise (the work), and the Levites, all skilled instrumentalists.
Also they were over bearers of burdens, and they had control over all who were employed in the work in any manner of service: and of the Levites there were scribes, and officers, and gatekeepers.
And [(overseers were appointed)] over the porters, and supervisors over all of the workers, for every (kind of) work. And, of the Levites, scribes, officers, and gatekeepers.
And when they brought out the money that was brought into the house of the Lord, Ḥilqiyyahu the priest found a book of the Tora of the Lord given by Moshe.
And when they took out the silver brought to the house of the L rd, Chilkiyahu the priest found the scroll [(Deuteronomy)] of the Torah of the L rd written by Moses.
And Ḥilqiyyahu answered and said to Shafan the scribe, I have found a book of the Tora in the house of the Lord. And Ḥilqiyyahu delivered the book to Shafan.
And Chilkiyahu spoke and said to Shafan the scribe: I have found the scroll of the Torah in the house of the L rd. And Chilkiyahu gave the scroll to Shafan.
And Shafan carried the book to the king, and further brought the king word back, saying, All that was committed to thy servants they are doing.
And Shafan brought the scroll to the king, and he also returned word to the king, saying: Everything entrusted to your servants they are doing.
And they have poured out the money that was found in the house of the Lord, and have delivered it into the hand of the overseers, and into the hand of the workmen.
And they minted the silver found in the house of the L rd and they gave it [to the treasurers] over the appointees and over the doers of the work.
Then Shafan the scribe told the king, saying, Ḥilqiyyahu the priest has given me a book. And Shafan read it before the king.
And Shafan the scribe told the king: Chilkiyahu the priest gave me a scroll. And Shafan read in it before the king.
And it came to pass, when the king had heard the words of the Tora, that he rent his clothes.
And it was, when the king heard the words of the Torah, that he rent his garments.
And the king commanded Ḥilqiyyahu, and Aĥiqam the son of Shafan, and ῾Avdon the son of Mikha, and Shafan the scribe, and ῾Asaya a servant of the king’s, saying,
And the king commanded Chilkiyahu and Achikam the son of Shafan and Avdon the son of Michah and Shafan the scribe and Asayah the king's servant, saying:
Go, inquire of the Lord for me, and for those who are left in Yisra᾽el and in Yehuda, concerning the words of the book that is found: for great is the wrath of the Lord that is poured out upon us, because our fathers have not kept the word of the Lord, to do according to all that is written in this book.
Go, inquire of the L rd for me and for the remnant in Israel and in Judah [(He had seen [Deuteronomy 28:36]: "The L rd will lead away you and your king, etc.")] about the words of the scroll that has been found. For great is the wrath of the L rd that has been poured out against us because our fathers did not heed the word of the L rd to do according to all that is written in this scroll.
And Ḥilqiyyahu, and they whom the king had appointed, went to Ḥulda the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Toqhat, the son of Ḥasra, keeper of the wardrobe; (now she dwelt in Yerushalayim in the second quarter:) and they spoke to her to that effect.
And Chilkiyahu went and others [designated by] the king to Chuldah the prophetess, the wife of Shalum the son of Tokhath the son of Chasrah, the keeper of the garments. And she sat in Jerusalem in the study house, and they spoke to her thus [(according to the words of the king.)]
וַתֹּ֣אמֶר לָהֶ֔ם כֹּֽה־אָמַ֥ר יְהֹוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל אִמְר֣וּ לָאִ֔ישׁ אֲשֶׁר־שָׁלַ֥ח אֶתְכֶ֖ם אֵלָֽי׃{ס}
And she said to them, Thus says the Lord God of Yisra᾽el, Tell the man who sent you to me,
And she said to them: Thus says the L rd G d of Israel: Speak to the man who sent you to me.
Thus says the Lord, Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, and upon its inhabitants, namely, all the curses that are written in the book which they have read before the king of Yehuda:
Thus says the L rd: Behold, I am bringing evil to this place and upon its inhabitants, all the curses written in the scroll which they read before the king of Judah.
because they have forsaken me, and have burned incense to other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands; therefore my wrath shall be poured out upon this place, and shall not be quenched.
Because they forsook Me and burned incense to other gods in order to anger Me with all the work of their hands. My wrath has been poured out against this place, and it will not be extinguished.
And as for the king of Yehuda, who sent you to inquire of the Lord, so shall you say to him, Thus says the Lord God of Yisra᾽el concerning the words which thou hast heard;
And to the king of Judah, who sends you to inquire of the L rd, thus shall you say to him: Thus says the L rd, the G d of Israel — the words that you have heard.
Because thy heart was submissive, and thou didst humble thyself before God, when thou didst hear his words against this place, and against its inhabitants, and didst humble thyself before me, and didst rend thy clothes, and weep before me; I also have heard thee, says the Lord.
But, because your heart is soft and you humbled yourself before G d when you heard His words concerning this place and its inhabitants, and you were humbled before Me, and you rent your garments, and you wept before Me — I, too, have heard, says the L rd.
הִנְנִ֨י אֹסִפְךָ֜ אֶל־אֲבֹתֶ֗יךָ וְנֶאֱסַפְתָּ֣ אֶל־קִבְרוֹתֶ֘יךָ֮ בְּשָׁלוֹם֒ וְלֹא־תִרְאֶ֣ינָה עֵינֶ֔יךָ בְּכֹל֙ הָרָעָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר אֲנִ֥י מֵבִ֛יא עַל־הַמָּק֥וֹם הַזֶּ֖ה וְעַל־יֹֽשְׁבָ֑יו וַיָּשִׁ֥יבוּ אֶת־הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ דָּבָֽר׃{ס}
Behold, I will gather thee to thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered to thy grave in peace, and thy eyes shall not see all the evil that I will bring upon this place, and upon its inhabitants. So they brought back word to the king.
Behold, I will gather you to your fathers, and you will be gathered to your grave in peace [(not witnessing the destruction of the Temple)], and your eyes will not see all the evil that I will bring upon this place and upon its inhabitants. And they returned word to the king.
Then the king sent and gathered together all the elders of Yehuda and Yerushalayim.
And the king sent and they gathered all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem.
And the king went up into the house of the Lord, and all the men of Yehuda, and the inhabitants of Yerushalayim, and the priests, and the Levites, and all the people, old and young: and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant that was found in the house of the Lord.
And the king went up to the house of the L rd, and all the men of Judah and the dwellers of Jerusalem and the priests and the Levites and all the people, from great to small. And he read in their ears all the words of the scroll of the covenant that was found in the house of the L rd.
And the king stood in his place, and made the covenant before the Lord, to walk after the Lord, and to keep his commandments, and his testimonies, and his statutes, with all his heart, and with all his soul, to perform the words of the covenant which are written in this book.
And the king stood in his [designated] place, and he made the covenant before the L rd, to follow the L rd and to keep His mitzvoth, His testimonies and His statues with all (his) heart and all (his) soul, to fulfill the words of the covenant written in this scroll.
And he caused all who were present in Yerushalayim and Binyamin to stand to it. And the inhabitants of Yerushalayim did according to the covenant of God, the God of their fathers.
And he stood [i.e., entered into the covenant] all who were found in Jerusalem and Benjamin. And the dwellers of Jerusalem did according to the covenant of G d, the G d of their fathers.
וַיָּ֨סַר יֹאשִׁיָּ֜הוּ אֶת־כׇּל־הַתֹּעֵב֗וֹת מִֽכׇּל־הָאֲרָצוֹת֮ אֲשֶׁ֣ר לִבְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵל֒ וַֽיַּעֲבֵ֗ד אֵ֤ת כׇּל־הַנִּמְצָא֙ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל לַעֲב֖וֹד אֶת־יְהֹוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵיהֶ֑ם כׇּל־יָמָ֕יו לֹ֣א סָ֔רוּ מֵאַחֲרֵ֕י יְהֹוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵ֥י אֲבוֹתֵיהֶֽם׃{ס}
And Yoshiyyahu removed all the abominations out of all the territories that belonged to the children of Yisra᾽el and he enforced all that were present in Yisra᾽el to serve the Lord their God. And all his days they departed not from following the Lord, the God of their fathers.
And Yoshiyahu removed all the abominations from all the lands of the children of Israel, and he caused all who were found in Israel to serve the L rd their G d. All his days they did not turn from the L rd, the G d of their fathers.
