Now it came to pass in the seventh month, that Yishma᾽el the son of Netanya the son of Elishama, of the seed royal, and some of the chief officers of the king, and ten men with him, came to Gedalyahu the son of Aĥiqam to Miżpa; and there they did eat bread together in Miżpa.

Then Yishma᾽el the son of Netanya and the ten men that were with him arose, and struck Gedalyahu the son of Aĥiqam the son of Shafan with the sword, and slew him, whom the king of Bavel had made governor over the land.

And Yishma᾽el slew all the men of Yehuda that were with him, with Gedalyahu, at Miżpa, and the Kasdim that were found there, and the men of war.

And it came to pass on the second day after the killing of Gedalyahu, (and no man knew it,)

that there came certain men from Shekhem, from Shilo, and from Shomeron, eighty men, (their beards shaven, and their clothes rent, and having cut themselves,) with offerings and incense in their hand, to bring them to the house of the Lord.

And Yishma᾽el the son of Netanya went out of Miżpa to meet them, weeping as he went: and it came to pass, as he met them, that he said to them, Come to Gedalyahu the son of Aĥiqam.

And when they came into the midst of the city, Yishma᾽el the son of Netanya slew them, and cast them into the midst of the pit, he, and the men that were with him.

But ten men were found among them that said to Yishma᾽el, Slay us not: for we have in the countryside hidden stores, of wheat, and of barley, and of oil, and of honey. So he desisted, and did not slay them among their brethren.

Now the pit wherein into which Yishma᾽el had cast all the dead bodies of the men, whom he had slain because of Gedalyahu, was that which Asa the king had made for fear of Ba῾sha king of Yisra᾽el: and Yishma᾽el the son of Netanyahu filled it with the slain.

Then Yishma᾽el carried away captive all the residue of the people that were in Miżpa, the king’s daughters, and all the people that remained in Miżpa, whom Nevuzar᾽adan the captain of the guard had committed to Gedalyahu the son of Aĥiqam: and Yishma᾽el the son of Netanya carried them away captive, and departed to go over to the children of ῾Ammon.

But when Yoĥanan the son of Qareaĥ, and all the captains of the forces that were with him, heard of all the evil that Yishma᾽el the son of Netanya had done,

then they took all the men, and went to fight with Yishma᾽el the son of Netanya, and found him by the great pool of waters that are in Giv῾on.

Now it came to pass, that when all the people who were with Yishma᾽el saw Yoĥanan the son of Qareaĥ, and all the captains of the forces that were with him, then they were glad.

So all the people that Yishma᾽el had carried away captive from Miżpa turned about and came back, and went to Yoĥanan the son of Qareaĥ.

But Yishma᾽el the son of Netanya escaped from Yoĥanan with eight men, and went to the children of ‘Ammon.

Then Yoĥanan the son of Qareaĥ, and all the captains of the forces that were with him, took all the remnant of the people from Miżpa, whom he had recovered from Yishma᾽el the son of Netanya, (after the latter had slain Gedalya the son of Aĥiqam,) mighty men of war, and the women, and the children, and the eunuchs whom he then brought from Giv῾on:

and they departed, and dwelt in Gerut-kimaham, which is by Bet-leĥem, to go to enter into Miżrayim,

because of the Kasdim: for they were afraid of them, because of Yishma᾽el the son of Netanya had slain Gedalyahu the son of Aĥiqam, whom the king of Bavel had made governor over the land.
