חֲצוֹת לַיְלָה אָקוּם לְהוֹדוֹת לָךְ עַל מִשְׁפְּטֵי צִדְקֶךָ (תהילים קי״ט:ס״ב):
“Chatzot Laylah (At mid-night) I awake to thank You for Your just laws.” (Psalms 119:62)
חֲצוֹת הוּא מְסֻגָּל כְּמוֹ פִּדְיוֹן, כִּי הוּא הַמְתָּקַת הַדִּינִים. כִּי צֶדֶק – דִּינָא, וּמִשְׁפָּט – רַחֲמֵי.
Chatzot is as effective as a redemption, for it mitigates the judgments. This is because “just” is judgment, and “laws” is mercy.
וְזֶהוּ: עַל מִשְׁפְּטֵי צִדְקֶךָ – הַיְנוּ שֶׁצֶּדֶק גּוֹבֵר עַל מִשְׁפָּט. הַתִּקּוּן לָזֶה: חֲצוֹת לַיְלָה אָקוּם.
This is the meaning of: **for Your just laws—**That is, [when] justice suppresses law, the way to correct this is: At chatzot of night I awake .
וְעִקַּר חֲצוֹת הוּא תָּמִיד אַחַר שִׁשָּׁה שָׁעוֹת מִתְּחִלַּת הַלַּיְלָה, הֵן בַּקַּיִץ וְהֵן בַּחֹרֶף, וְאָז מַתְחִיל זְמַן חֲצוֹת. וְנִמְשָׁךְ עַד גְּמַר אַשְׁמוּרָה שְׁנִיָּה, דְּהַיְנוּ שְׁתֵּי שָׁעוֹת:
And the main time for Chatzot is always six hours from nightfall, whether in summer or winter. The time of Chatzot begins then, and continues until the end of the second watch—i.e., for two hours.
וּבַבֹּקֶר טוֹב לְהִסְתַּכֵּל עַל הַשָּׁמַיִם, וְעַל־יְדֵי־זֶה נִמְשָׁךְ הַדַּעַת, עַיֵּן בַּזֹּהַר הַקָּדוֹשׁ (פ' בשלח נז):
In the morning it is good to gaze at the sky. By doing so, one draws daat (holy knowledge).
