ויש הבדל בין תואר משיח ובין תואר נשיא. שתואר 'נשיא' הוא שם שמצטרף, ולא יקרא בו כאשר עבר מנשיאותו. מה שאין כך בתואר 'משיח' יקרא אף אחר שעבר. (ויקרא ס' רו)

And there is a difference between the adjective משיח (annointed) and the adjective נשיא (leader): The adjective נשיא is a title, and one is not called this when his leadership is over. This is not so with the adjective משיח, as one is called this even after it has expired.
