וכל המלות המושאלות השתדלו חז"ל להשיבם אל הוראתם העצמי.
And the sages of blessed memory explain any המלות המושאלות (metaphoric words) with respect to the topic from which they are borrowed:
כמו על פי, על דבר – פירשו מענין דיבור. (אחרי ס' פח)
Like על פי (through) and על דבר (because of) – they explain them from the topic of speech.
"והקמות את המשכן כמשפטו" – מעניין משפט ודין וכדומה. (קדושים ס' פד)
והקמות את המשכן כמשפטו (And you shall rear up the tabernacle according to the fashion thereof)⁵⁷⁴ – from the topic of law and judgement, etc.

וכן בשמות המשותפים הראו חבורם. כמו שם "פרד" בעבור שנפרד. וכן "ערב" על עירוב הצורות, וכדומה. (ויקרא ס' רנז).
And with בשמות המשותפים(homonyms) they show connections, like the noun פרד (mule) because it is sterile and thus separate. And moreover, ערב (evening), since it is mixed up in appearance, etc.
