לדעת חכמי הגמרא יש הבדל בין "עוף" ובין "צפור". שעוף הוא שם הסוג וכולל טהורים וטמאים, וצפור מיוחד רק לטהורים (אם לא כשאמר "צפור שמים" או "צפור כנף"). ויש בזה פלוגתא בספרי ובירושלמי. ודעת הספרא שגם 'צפור' הוא שם הסוג (מצורע ס' יא)

According to the sages of the Gemara, there is a difference between עוף and צפור (bird): עוף is a category and includes the clean and the unclean, while צפור only includes the clean (unless it says צפור שמים or צפור כנף). And there is a disagreement about this in Sifre and in the Jerusalem Talmud. And according to Sifra, צפור is also a category.
