עיקר שם "מדה" הונח על מדידת כמות כל גשם. ועל מדת הכלי בא בשאלה; מן מדידת האורך ורוחב וגובה שלפיהן ישערו כמה יחזיק הכלי בתוכו.
The primary meaning of the noun מדה (measurement) is about the measurement of a quantity of anything physical. And with respect to the measurement of a vessel, it comes with a query: from measuring its length, width, and height, how much will the vessel hold?
ועיקר הפעל המיוחד למדידת הכל – 'כול'. "וכל בשליש עפר הארץ"
