וחז"ל היה להם כלל בלשון שיש הבדל בין מספר שנים – שתים בצורת הנפרד, ובין שני – שתי בצורת הסמיכות. כשאמר "שני כבשים", "שני שעירים" – יקפיד על שיוי הנמנים והתדמותם זה לזה. וכשאמר "שנים כבשים" לא יקפיד על השיוי. (התבאר באורך אחרי סי' יז)
And the sages of blessed memory had a rule in language that there is a difference between the number שנים - שתים (two) as an ordinary cardinal number and שני - שתי (second) as a construct cardinal number: Whenever it says שני כבשים (two he-lambs) or שני שעירים (two he-goats) – it is precise in that they must be alike in all respects. And whenever it says שנים כבשים (two he-lambs), it is not precise that they must be alike in all respects.
