Ayelet Hashachar, translated by Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2021

For most nouns and verbs, there is a precise meaning if we are to assume they come to be completely precise. Nevertheless, sometimes they come in their broad meaning, and they usually make sense if they come in their precise meaning or in their broad meaning. And sometimes the Torah clarifies things through certain superfluous words, etc. And several times, the noun is repeated to teach something. As when it repeats the noun זכר (male) to exclude the androgynous, because its broad meaning includes it. And it repeats בבקר בבקר (every morning)¹⁶⁷ to mean precisely morning. And it depends on the majority usage of that noun; with the nouns זכר and בוקר, since they usually come in their broad meaning, we can presume that they come in their broad meaning.

footnotes: ¹⁶⁷ Leviticus 6:5.

And there are verbs that are usually used in the precise way, and through repeating the noun or the verb they are known to come in their broad meaning. As when it repeats the noun קציר (harvest) and the noun שדה (field). And moreover, with the nouns בני ישראל (children of Israel), אדם (man), חצר אהל מועד (courtyard of the Tent of Meeting), ימים ונחלים (seas and rivers), בהמה (animal) - they usually come in their precise meaning, and they need to have an amplificatory expression for them to come in their broad meaning.

ובשמות: מזבח (ויקרא ס' קמב), לידה (תזריע ס' ב), קרבן (אחרי ס' צג) – הייתי מפרש בדרך ההרחבה, שכן רוב תשמישם בתנ"ך, וצריך לימוד שיבואו בדרך הדיוק. עיי"ש בכל המקומות שציינתי.

Ayelet Hashachar, translated by Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2021

And with the nouns מזבח (altar), לידה (delivery of a baby), קרבן (sacrifice) – I explained that they come in their broad meaning most of the time they are used in the Scripture and that there needs to be a special reason for one to conclude that they come in the precise meaning.
