אמר החכם סבול האמת ואם יימר:
- THE sage observes, Brook the truth patiently, however unpalatable it may be.
ושאלו לחכם. מה גדר הסבל הנאה? אמר להם הוא הסבל שאין עמו תרעומת עם שום אדם:
- It was asked of the sage to point out when patience is most laudable? He replied, When devoid of ill feelings towards mankind.
ואמר הסבל שני מינים. סבל הצרות. והסבל במה שאסר הבורא עליך:
- Patience may be classified under two heads: 1st. That which enables us to endure hardships without repining; and 2nd. That which prompts us to abstain from that which the Creator has interdicted.
ואמר הזכרון שני מינים. זכרון הסבל בעת הפגע. וטוב ממנו זכרון הבורא במה שאסור לך להיות מבדיל בינך לבינו:
- The advantages of memory are twofold. 1st The recollection of patience under affliction; 2nd. But the most preferable is the remembrance of our Creator, which enables us to remove the barrier between us and Him.
ואמר אני תמה על מי שלא זמן לכל פגע סבל. ולכל טוב הודאה:
- O that man would store up patience for misfortune, and gratitude for kindness!
ואמר הדאגה על מה שלא היה. היא רעה חולה:
- Grief for imaginary evil causes actual malady.
ואמר שתיית סם המות טוב מן הדאגה:
- Care corrodes more than poison.
ואמר כפי הלבבות. יהיה היגון: ואמר כפי הגדולה. תהיינה סבות הנפילה. (ויש אומרים הסבל):
- Our grief can only be measured by sensitiveness, and our downfall by our previous eminence.
ואמר הסבל טוב שבעניינים. והענוה טוב שבדברים:
- Patience is the safest counsellor, and meekness the truest companion.
ואמר כל מי שאינו מנצח. האבל בסבל יאריך יגונו:
- Sorrow unrestrained by patience prolongs grief.
[הסבל שלום. והמהירות חרטה]: ואמר הסבל עושר. והחריצות. רש:
- Patience reaps peace, and rashness regret; the former riches, the latter poverty.
ואמר יש רעה כשתדמנה לרעה אחרת תהיה מן הטובות. ואמר. יש רעה טובה. מהסבל:
- There are evils which by contrast may be termed felicities.
ואמר אין למי שאין לו יכולת טוב מן הסבל:
- Patience is the invulnerable shield of the defenceless.
ואמר מי מבני אדם יותר סבלן? אמר מי שמשיב תאותו:
- To the question, Who is the most patient? the sage replied, He who curbs his passions.
ואמר מי שמגביר בסבל בעת צרתו. יגיע אל חפצו מרום לבבו:
- Patience under difficulties dignifies the heart and insures success.
ואמר הסבל חפשי. אפילו אם יגיע לבעליו הנזק:
- Patience will result in independence, though momentary loss may attend it.
ואמר מי ששם הסבל תכליתו. יגיעהו הסבל אל חפצו:
- He who makes patience his leading principle, will be led thereby to the realization of his desires.
ואמר הסבל מר. ומעביר מבעליו הנזק:
- Patience though bitter, yet guards its votaries from injury.
ואמר אין דבר שמחסר מן הרעה כמו הסבל:
- Nothing will mitigate our sufferings more than patient endurance.
ואמר איזה מבני אדם נכבד אצל הבורא? אמר מי שיגיע אל הצרות ויסבול את הבאות [וישבח לבורא]:
- Who is the most esteemed by his Creator? He who is grateful for kindness, resigned in adversity, and praises God.
