The entire community arose and raised their voices; and the people wept that night.

And all the congregation lifted up their voice, and cried; and the people wept that night.

And the entire congregation [the Sanhedrin] lifted their voice and clamored and the people cried on that night.

They railed against Moshe and Aharon—all of Bnei Yisroel—and the entire congregation said to them: “Would we had died in the land of Egypt or in this desert, would that we had died.

And all the children of Yisra᾽el murmured against Moshe and against Aharon: and the whole congregation said to them, Would that we had died in the land of Miżrayim! or would we had died in this wilderness!

And all of the children of Israel railed against Moses and Aaron, and the entire congregation said to them: Would that we had died in the land of Egypt, or would that we had died in this desert!

Why does Adonoy bring us into this land to fall by the sword; our wives and infants would be as spoils; is it not better for us to return to Egypt?”

And why has the Lord brought us to this land, to fall by the sword, that our wives and our children should be a prey? were it not better for us to return to Miżrayim?

And why is the L-rd bringing us to this land to fall by the sword, (with) our wives and little ones to be taken as spoil? Would it not be better for us to return to Egypt?

They said to each other: “Let us appoint (lit. place) a head and we will return to Egypt.”

And they said to one another, Let us appoint a chief, and let us return to Miżrayim.

And one man said to the other: Let us make a leader and return to Egypt.

Moshe and Aharon fell on their faces before the entire gathering of the congregation of Bnei Yisroel.

Then Moshe and Aharon fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Yisra᾽el.

And Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before the entire assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel.

Yehoshua the son of Nun and Caleiv the son of Yefuneh, who were among those who scouted the land, tore their clothing [in grief].

And Yehoshua the son of Nun, and Kalev the son of Yefunne, of those who spied out the land, rent their clothes:

And Yehoshua bin Nun and Calev ben Yefuneh, of those who had spied out the land, rent their garments.

They said to the entire congregation of Bnei Yisroel, saying: “The land through which we have passed to scout it; that land is very, very good.

and they spoke to all the congregation of the children of Yisra᾽el, saying, The land, which we passed through to spy it out, is an exceedingly good land.

And they spoke to the entire congregation of the children of Israel, saying: The land which we passed through to spy out — the land is good, extremely good.

If Adonoy desires us, He will bring us into this land and give it to us, a land which flows with milk and honey.

If the Lord delight in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it us; a land which flows with milk and honey.

If the L-rd desires us, He will bring us to this land, and He will give it to us, a land which flows milk and honey.

However, do not rebel against Adonoy and you do not be afraid of the nation of the land, for they are [as] our bread, their protection is removed from them, and Adonoy is with us; do not be afraid of them.”

Only rebel not against the Lord, nor fear the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defence is departed from them, and the Lord is with us: fear them not.

Only against the L-rd do not rebel, and you will no longer fear the people of the land, for they are our "bread" [to be consumed by us]: Their shade has departed from them [i.e., their worthy ones, who shielded them, (e.g., Iyyov) have died], and the L-rd is with us; do not fear them.

The entire congregation said that they should be stoned to death, when the glory of Adonoy appeared in the Tent of Meeting, to all of Bnei Yisroel.

But all the congregation said to stone them with stones. And the glory of the Lord appeared in the Tent of Meeting before all the children of Yisra᾽el.

And the entire congregation said to stone them [Yehoshua and Calev], and the glory of the L-rd appeared in the tent of meeting [(the cloud descended there)] to all the children of Israel.

Adonoy said to Moshe: “Until where will this people provoke Me, and how much longer will they have no faith in Me, despite all the signs which I have done in their midst.

And the Lord said to Moshe, How long will this people provoke me? and how long will it be before they believe me, for all the signs which I have performed among them?

And the L-rd said to Moses: How long will this people provoke Me, and how long will they not believe in Me, after all the signs that I wrought in their midst!

I shall smite them with the plague and annihilate them; and I shall make you into a greater and stronger people than they.”

I will smite them with the pestilence, and disinherit them, and will make of thee a greater nation and mightier than they.

I shall smite them with the pestilence and eradicate them, and [as for My oath to the patriarchs], I shall make you a nation greater and mightier than they.

Moshe said to Adonoy: “But Egypt will hear, that You, in Your might have brought up this people from among them.

And Moshe said to the Lord, Then Miżrayim shall hear it, (for thou didst bring up this people in thy might from among them;)

And Moses said to the L-rd: When Egypt, from whose midst You with Your might, brought up this people, will hear [of Your destroying them],

They will say concerning the inhabitants of this land, they have heard that You, Adonoy, are among this people, Who appears to them eye to eye (face to face), You, Adonoy; Your Cloud stands over them, in a Pillar of Cloud You go before them daily and in a Pillar of Fire, nightly.

and they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land: who have heard that thou Lord art among this people, that thou Lord art seen face to face, and that thy cloud stands over them, and that thou goest before them, by day time in a pillar of cloud, and in a pillar of fire by night.

They will say about the inhabitants of this land: They have heard that You, the L-rd, are in the midst of this people, that face to face You, the L-rd, appear to them, and that Your cloud stands over them, and that in a pillar of cloud You go before them by day and in a pillar of fire by night —

If You kill this nation like a single man, the nations will say—they who have heard of Your reputation—as follows:

Now if thou shalt kill all this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of thee will speak, saying,

If You put this people to death as one man — [(Egypt will say that)] the nations who heard of You [i.e., of Your great love for Israel, (not knowing of their having sinned against You)] will say:

“It is because of Adonoy’s inability to bring this people into the land that He swore to them, that he slaughtered them in the desert.”

Because the Lord was not able to bring this people into the land which he swore to them, therefore he has slain them in the wilderness.

It is because of the L-rd's inability to bring this people into the land that He swore to (give) them, [(G-d being able to overcome one king (Pharaoh) but not thirty-one)], that He slaughtered them in the desert.

Now, please, let my Master’s power be enhanced as You spoke, saying;

And now, I pray thee, let the power of my Lord be great, according as thou hast spoken, saying,

And now, let the power of the L-rd be magnified, I pray You, as You have spoken [See Sanhedrin 111a]:

Adonoy, slow to anger and abounding in kindness, forgiving iniquity, and transgression; Who does not completely acquit, Who will visit the inquities of the fathers upon their children, to the third [generation] and to the fourth [generation.]

The Lord is longsuffering, and great in love, forgiving iniquity and transgression, but by no means clearing the guilty, punishing the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generation.

"The L-rd withholds wrath and He is abundant in lovingkindness. He forgives sin and rebellion, and He absolves [those who repent] (and) He does not absolve [those who do not repent]. He remembers the sins of fathers upon sons, upon the third [generation] and upon the fourth."

Please forgive this people according the magnitude of Your kindness, and as You have borne this people since Egypt until this time.”

Pardon, I pray thee, the iniquity of this people according to the greatness of thy love, and as thou hast forgiven this people, from Miżrayim until now.

Forgive, I pray You, the sin of this people in the greatness of Your lovingkindness, and as You have forgiven this people from Egypt until now.

Adonoy said, “I have forgiven them, just as you spoke.

And the Lord said, I have pardoned according to thy word:

And the L-rd said: I have forgiven because of your words [viz., lest they say: "It is because of the L-rd's inability, etc."]

However, just as I live and the Glory of Adonoy fills the entire land;

but truly, as I live, and all the earth is filled with the glory of the Lord:

However, [I swear that] as I live and as the glory of the L-rd fills all the earth,

For, all the people who see My glory and My signs which I have done in Egypt and in the desert, and they have tested Me these ten times and they have not listened to My voice.

surely, all those men who have seen my glory, and my miracles, which I did in Miżrayim and in the wilderness, and yet have tempted me now these ten times, and have not hearkened to my voice:

That all the men who saw My glory and My signs that I performed in Egypt and in the desert, and who proved Me this ten times [see Erchin 15a] and did not hearken to My voice —

If they will see the land that I have sworn to their fathers; all those who angered Me will not see it.

surely, they shall not see the land which I swore to their fathers, nor shall any of those who provoked me see it:

They shall not see the land that I swore to their forefathers, and all who provoke Me shall not see it.

My servant Caleiv, because he possesed in him a different spirit, and followed Me fully, I shall bring him into the land to which he came, and his children will cast [its inhabitants] from it.

but my servant Kalev, because he had another spirit with him, and followed me fully, him will I bring into the land into which he went; and his seed shall possess it,

And My servant Calev, because he had a different spirit in him, [telling the spies one thing ("I am with you"), but intending to speak the truth (see 13:30)], and he filled [his heart to follow] after Me, I shall bring him to the land where he came [(Chevron shall be given to him)], and his seed will drive out [its inhabitants].

The Amaleki and the Cana’ani are now dwelling in the valley. Tomorrow turn back and you shall travel the desert by way of the Reed Sea.”

(Now the ῾Amaleqi and the Kena῾ani dwelt in the valley.) Tomorrow turn, and get you into the wilderness by way of the Sea of Suf.

And the Amaleki and the Canaani dwell in the valley [(If you go there they will kill you, for I will not be with you.)] Tomorrow, turn back, and travel in the desert by way of the Red Sea.

Adonoy spoke to Moshe and to Aharon, saying:

And the Lord spoke to Moshe and to Aharon, saying,

And the L-rd spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying:

“Until when will this wicked congregation [exist], those who provoke Me? The complaints of Bnei Yisroel, which they complain against Me, I have heard.

How long shall I bear with this evil congregation, who murmur against me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Yisra᾽el, which they murmur against me.

How long for this evil congregation [the spies (whence it is derived that a "congregation" is ten)], who stir up complaint against Me? The complaints of the children of Israel, whom they [the spies] stir up against Me, have I heard.

Say to them: “As I live, says Adonoy, if I do not [do to you] as you have spoken in My ears; so I shall do to you.

Say to them, As I live, says the Lord, as you have spoken in my ears, so will I do to you:

Say to them: As I live, says the L-rd — Just as you have spoken in My ears [(2): "…or would that we had died in this desert"] — thus shall I do to you.

In this desert your corpses shall fall, all of you who were counted according to your numbers, from twenty years and above, because you have complained against Me,

your carcasses shall fall in this wilderness; and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, who have murmured against me,

In this desert shall your carcasses fall, and all your number according to all of your count [i.e., according to any count that you take, such as for army duty or for the giving of shekalim] from twenty years and above [(excluding the Levites, who are not counted from twenty)], whom you stirred up against Me.

Surely you shall [not] come into the land to which I raised My Hand [to swear] that I would cause you to live in it; except for Caleiv the son of Yefuneh and Yehoshua the son of Nun.

shall by no means come into the land, concerning which I swore to make you dwell there, except Kalev the son of Yefunne, and Yehoshua the son of Nun.

If you come (i.e., you shall not come) to the land concerning which I lifted My hand (in oath) to settle you therein — except Calev ben Yefuneh and Yehoshua bin Nun.

Your infants, about whom you said that they will be as spoils, I shall bring them [there] and they will know the land which you despised.

But your little ones, who, you said, should be a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall know the land which you have despised.

And your little ones, of whom you said that they would fall spoil — I shall bring them (into the land), and they will know the land which you despised.

Your corpses—yours, shall fall in this desert.

But as for you, your carcasses shall fall in this wilderness.

But as for you — your carcasses shall fall in this desert.

Your children, they shall be wanderers in the desert for forty years, and they will bear [the burden of] your dissoluteness, until the last of your corpses are in the desert.

And your children shall wander in the wilderness forty years, and bear your backslidings, until your carcasses be consumed in the wilderness.

And your children will wander in the desert forty years [(so that those who were twenty at the time reach the age of sixty, none to die before that age)], and they shall bear your guilts [plural, that of the golden calf (of their first year in the desert — see Exodus 32:32) and that of the "railing" (these "combining" with the sin of the spies in the second year)], until your carcasses are consumed in the desert.

According to the number of days which you scouted the land; forty days, a day for a year, a day for a year you will bear the burden of your iniquity forty years, and you will know My displeasure.

According to the number of the days in which you spied out the land, even forty days, each day for a year, shall you bear your iniquities, namely, forty years, and you shall know my displeasure.

According to the number of days that you spied out the land, forty days — a day for a year, a day for a year — shall you bear your sins, forty years, and you shall know (of) your removal [of your hearts] from Me.

I am Adonoy; I have spoken——if I do not do this to this entire evil congregation that are gathered against Me; in this desert they shall be finished and there they shall die.”

I the Lord have said, I will surely do it to all this evil congregation, that are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.

I, the L-rd, have spoken, if I do not do this (i.e., I shall do this) to all this evil congregation who have assembled against Me. In this desert shall they be consumed, and there shall they die.

Those men whom Moshe sent to scout the land, who returned and provoked the complaints of the entire congregation against him, by spreading slander about the land;

And the men, whom Moshe sent to spy out the land, who returned, and made all the congregation murmur against him, by bringing up a slander upon the land;

And the men whom Moses had sent to spy out all the land and who, upon their return, stirred up the entire congregation, generating speech against the land —

Those men died—who spread evil slander against the land—in a plague, before Adonoy.

now those men that brought up the evil report upon the land, died by the plague before the Lord,

Those men died, who had generated evil speech of the land, in the ["apposite"] plague before the L-rd [i.e., within His system of "measure for measure" (Their slanderous tongues uncoiled to their navels, and worms oozed from their tongues into their navels)].

Yehoshua the son of Nun and Caleiv the son of Yefuneh, lived, from among those men who went to scout the land.

but Yehoshua the son of Nun, and Kalev the son of Yefunne, of the men who went to spy out the land; they lived.

And Yehoshua bin Nun and Calev ben Yefuneh lived from [the portions of] those men who went to spy out the land.

Moshe spoke these words to all of Bnei Yisroel, and the people mourned greatly.

And Moshe told these sayings to all the children of Yisra᾽el: and the people mourned greatly.

And Moses spoke these words to all the children of Israel, and the people mourned exceedingly.

They awoke early in the morning and went up to the peak of the mountain, saying: “We are ready to go up to the place of which Adonoy spoke (promised), for we have sinned.”

And they rose up early in the morning, and went up to the top of the mountain, saying, We are here, and will go up to the place which the Lord has promised: for we have sinned.

And they arose early in the morning, and they went up to the top of the mountain [leading to Eretz Yisrael], saying: We are ready, and we will go up to the place [Eretz Yisrael] of which the L-rd has spoken [to give it to us], for we have sinned [in saying: "Would it not be better for us to return to Egypt!"]

Moshe said: “Why are you now transgressing the word of Adonoy; it will not succeed.

And Moshe said, Why now do you transgress the commandment of the Lord? it shall not prosper.

And Moses said: Why do you now transgress the word of the L-rd? It [what you are about to do] will not succeed.

Do not go up, for Adonoy is not among you, and do not die before your enemies,

Go not up, for the Lord is not among you: so that you may not be smitten before your enemies.

Do not go up, for the L-rd is not in your midst, and do not be smitten before your foes.

For the Amaleki and the Cana’ani are there before you, and you will fall by the sword, for, you turned from following Adonoy, and Adonoy will not be with you.”

For the ῾Amaleqi and the Kena῾ani are there before you, and you shall fall by the sword: because you have turned away from the Lord, therefore the Lord will not be with you.

For the Amaleki and the Canaani are there before you, and you will fall by the sword. For this [will befall you] for having turned back from the L-rd, and the L-rd will not be with you.

They defiantly went up the mountain peak, but the Ark of the Covenant of Adonoy, and Moshe, did not move from amidst the encampment.

But they presumed to go up to the hill top: nevertheless the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and Moshe, departed not out of the camp.

And they made bold to go up to the top of the mountain, and the ark of the covenant of the L-rd and Moses did not stir from the midst of the camp.

The Amaleki and the Cana’ani swooped down, they who were dwelling in that mountain, and they smote and crushed them until Chormah.

Then the ῾Amaleqi came down, and the Kena῾ani who dwelt in that hill, and smote them, and discomfited them, as far as Ḥorma.

And the Amaleki came down and the Canaani, who lived in that mountain, and they smote them and continued smiting them until the Charmah ["Devastation" (so called after the event)].
