Korach took, [Korach], the son of Yitzhar the son of Kehos, the son of Levi, and Dasan and Aviram the sons of Eliav, and On the son of Peles, the sons of Reuvein.

Now Qoraĥ, the son of Yiżhar, the son of Qehat, the son of Levi, and Datan and Aviram, the sons of Eli᾽av, and On, the son of Pelet, of the sons of Re᾽uven, took men:

And Korach set himself apart [from the midst of the congregation (to contend against the "awarding" of the priesthood to Aaron)], the son of Yitzhar, the son of Kehath, the son of Levi [("the son of Jacob" being omitted in consideration of Jacob's prayer (Genesis 49:6)], and Dathan and Aviram, the sons of Eliav [(of the tribe of Reuven, neighbors of Korach in the southern encampment — "Woe to the wicked one; woe to his neighbor!")], and On, the son of Peleth, sons [i.e., descendants] of Reuven.

They rose up before Moshe with men from Bnei Yisroel [numbering] two hundred and fifty, who were the leaders of the congregation, those who were called to meetings, men of [prominent] name.

and they rose up before Moshe, with certain of the children of Yisra᾽el, two hundred and fifty princes of the assembly, regularly summoned to the congregation, men of renown:

And they arose before Moses — and men of the children of Israel, two hundred and fifty, chiefs of the congregation, designates of the time, people of name.

They gathered against Moshe and Aharon, and they said to them: “You have [taken] too much for yourselves [and] since the entire congregation are all holy and Adonoy is in their midst, why do you raise yourselves above the assembly of Adonoy?”

and they gathered themselves together against Moshe and against Aharon, and said to them, You take too much upon you, seeing all the congregation are holy, every one of them, and the Lord is among them: why then do you raise yourselves up above the congregation of the Lord?

And they banded against Moses and against Aaron and they said to them: [You have arrogated] too much for yourselves. For the entire congregation are all holy [(all of them heard things from the mouth of the L-rd on Sinai)], and the L-rd is in their midst, and why would you raise yourselves above the congregation of the L-rd? [If you (Moses) took kingship you should not have taken priesthood for your brother.]

Moshe heard, and he fell upon his face.

And when Moshe heard it, he fell on his face:

And Moses heard, and he fell on his face, ["felled" by their seditiousness].

He spoke to Korach and to his entire congregation, saying: “[In the] morning, Adonoy will make known who is His, and who is holy, He will bring close to Him; and whoever He chooses, He will bring near to Him.

and he spoke to Qoraĥ and to all his company, saying, Tomorrow morning the Lord will show who is his, and who is holy; and will cause him to come near to him: even him whom he has chosen will he cause to come near to him.

And he spoke to Korach and to his whole congregation, saying: In the morning [(Moses pushing them off on the chance of their repenting)], the L-rd will make known who is His [for levitical service] and the holy one [for the priesthood], and He will draw [them] near to Him. And whom He will choose, He will draw near to Him.

Do this: Take, for yourselves, fire pans, Korach and his entire congregation,

This do; Take censers, Qoraĥ, and all his company;

Do this: Take for yourselves fire-pans [coal-rakers with handles], Korach and his entire congregation.

and place fire in them and put incense upon them before Adonoy, tomorrow; and it will be that the man who will be chosen by Adonoy, he is the holy one; [you have taken] too much upon yourselves, sons of Levi.”

and put fire in them, and put incense in them before the Lord tomorrow: and it shall be that the man whom the Lord chooses, he shall be holy: you take too much upon you, you sons of Levi.

And place in them fire, and put incense upon them before the L-rd tomorrow [(the offering of the incense being the choicest of the high-priestly services — but that which killed Nadav and Avihu, who were not elected for it)], and it shall be, the man whom the L-rd shall choose, he is the holy one [(I warn you: Just as we have only one G-d, we have only one high-priest; he shall be proved to be "the holy one"; the others, perforce, having offered "strange fire," shall die.)] A great thing have you taken upon yourselves, O sons of Levi [to contend with the Holy One Blessed be He].

Moshe said to Korach, “Please listen sons of Levi,

And Moshe said to Qoraĥ, Hear, I pray you, sons of Levi:

And Moses said to Korach [He began to speak to him gently, but seeing him to be adamant, and fearing that the other tribes might join him and perish with him, he began exhorting them, viz.:] Hear, I pray you, O sons of Levi.

is it but a pittance for yourselves that the God of Israel has separated you from the [rest of the] congregation of Israel to bring you closer to Him to perform the services of the Mishkan of Adonoy, and to stand before the congregation to serve them?

is it but a small thing to you, that the God of Yisra᾽el has separated you from the congregation of Yisra᾽el, to bring you near to himself to do the service of the tabernacle of the Lord, and to stand before the congregation to minister to them?

Is it too little for you that the G-d of Israel has separated you from the congregation of Israel to draw you near to Him to perform the service of the mishkan of the L-rd and to stand before the congregation [on the duchan (the platform) to sing] to serve them?

He brought you near with all of your brethern the sons of Levi with you, and yet you ask to be kohanim as well?

And he has brought thee near to him, and all thy brethren the sons of Levi with thee: and do you seek the priesthood also?

And that He has brought you near and all of your brothers, the sons of Levi, with you [to that service from which He excluded the rest of the congregation of Israel] that you also seek priesthood!

Therefore, you and your entire congregation who are gathered against Adonoy; and what is Aharon that you rail against him?”

For which cause both thou and all thy company who are gathered together are against the Lord: and what is Aharon, that you murmur against him?

Therefore, you, and all of your congregation who are gathered [together with you] — it is against the L-rd [that you are gathered (for it is at His bidding that I conferred the high-priesthood upon Aaron)]; and Aaron, what is he that you rail against him!

Moshe sent to call for Dasan and Avirom the sons of Eliav and they said “We will not go up.

And Moshe sent to call Datan and Aviram, the sons of Eli᾽av; but they said, We will not come up:

And Moses sent to call to Dathan and to Aviram, the sons of Eliav [(— whence it is derived that one must not nurture dissension, Moses sending to conciliate them)], and they said: "We shall not go up." [Their mouths "tripped them up," for it is "down" that they went.]

Is it but a pittance that you have brought us up from a land flowing with milk and honey to kill us in the desert, that you must excercise power over us to make yourself powerful as well?

is it a small thing that thou hast brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness, and dost thou also make thyself a prince over us?

Is it too little that you brought us up from a land flowing milk and honey to put us to death in the desert [see 14:29] that you would also lord it over us!

Even into a land flowing with milk and honey you have not brought us, and [not] given us an inheritance of fields and vineyards if you put those people’s eyes out, [even then] we would not go up.”

Moreover thou hast not brought us to a land flowing with milk and honey, nor given us inheritance of fields and vineyards: wilt thou put out the eyes of these men? we will not come up.

You have neither brought us to a land flowing milk and honey, [nor] have you given us an inheritance of field and vineyard. Even if you put out the eyes of "those men" [(a euphemism for themselves)], we shall not go up.

Moshe was extremely distressed, and said to Adonoy: “Do not turn to their offering; not a donkey did I sequester from any one of them nor have I done ill to any one of them.”

And Moshe was much angered, and said to the Lord, Have no regard to their offering: I have not taken one ass from them, nor have I hurt one of them.

And Moses was sorely grieved, and he said to the L-rd: Do not turn to their offering [(the incense that they will offer tomorrow)]. Not an ass of one of them have I taken [(Even the ass which I took (on their behalf) to transport my family from Midian to Egypt was not theirs but mine!)], and I have not done evil to one of them.

Moshe said to Korach: “You and your entire congregation will be before Adonoy, you, and they, and Aharon, tomorrow.

And Moshe said to Qoraĥ, Be thou and all thy company before the Lord, thou, and they, and Aharon, tomorrow:

And Moses said to Korach: You and all your congregation be before the L-rd — you and they [your congregation] and Aaron tomorrow.

Each man will take his firepan and place incense in them and you will offer before Adonoy each man his firepan, two hundred and fifty firepans, and you and Aharon will each take his own firepan.”

and take every man his censer, and put incense in them, and present before the Lord every man his censer, two hundred and fifty censers; thou also, and Aharon, each of you his censer.

And take each man his fire-pan and put incense upon them, and present before the L-rd, each man [of the two hundred and fifty], his fire-pan, two hundred and fifty fire-pans; and you and Aaron, each his fire-pan.

Each man took his firepan and they placed fire in them and they put incense in them and they stood at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting along with Moshe and Aharon.

And they took every man his censer, and put fire in them, and laid incense on them, and stood in the door of the Tent of Meeting with Moshe and Aharon.

And each man took his fire-pan and they placed fire upon them and put incense upon them. And they stood at the door of the tent of meeting, and Moses and Aaron.

Korach congregated against them, the entire congregation at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting, and the glory of Adonoy appeared to the entire congregation.

And Qoraĥ gathered all the congregation against them to the door of the Tent of Meeting: and the glory of the Lord appeared to all the congregation.

And Korach convened against them the entire congregation [(whom he had instigated against them by mockery the night before)] at the door of the tent of meeting; and the glory of the L-rd appeared to the entire congregation [in a pillar of cloud].

Adonoy spoke to Moshe and to Aharon, saying:

And the Lord spoke to Moshe and to Aharon, saying,

And the L-rd spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying:

“Separate yourselves from among this congregation, and I will annihalate them in an instant.”

Separate yourselves from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment.

Separate yourselves from the midst of this congregation, and I shall consume them this instant.

They fell upon their faces, and they said: “Almighty, the God of the spirits of all flesh; if one man sins shall You be angry with the entire congregation?”

And they fell upon their faces, and said, O God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, shall one man sin, and wilt thou be angry with all the congregation?

And they fell on their faces and they said: O G-d, the G-d of the spirits of all flesh, [who knows all of their thoughts (and can distinguish the guilty from the guiltless)], shall one man sin and You rage against the entire congregation!

Adonoy spoke to Moshe, saying:

And the Lord spoke to Moshe, saying,

And the L-rd spoke [(in acquiescence)] to Moses, saying:

Speak to the congregation, saying: “Depart from the vicinity of the dwelling of Korach, Dasan and Avirom.”

Speak to the congregation, saying, Get up from about the dwelling of Qoraĥ, Datan, and Aviram.

Speak to the congregation, saying: Remove yourselves from around the dwelling of Korach, Dathan, and Aviram.

Moshe rose up and went to Dasan and Avirom and the elders of Israel went along after him.

And Moshe rose up and went to Datan and Aviram; and the elders of Yisra᾽el followed him.

And Moses arose and he went to Dathan and Aviram, [thinking they would defer to him], and there went after him the elders of Israel.

He spoke to the congregation, saying: “Please get away from the tents of these evil men, and do not touch anything belonging to them, lest you be swept away in all their transgressions.”

And he spoke to the congregation, saying, Depart, I pray you, from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing of theirs, lest you be consumed in all their sins.

And [(his overture failing)] he spoke to the congregation, saying: Depart, now, from the tents of these wicked men, and do not touch anything that is theirs, lest you perish in all of their sins.

They withdraw from the dwelling of Korach, Dasan and Avirom, and all around; and Dasan and Avirom went out, and stood at the door of their tents with their wives, children and infants.

So they went up from the dwelling of Qoraĥ, Datan, and Aviram, on every side: and Datan and Aviram came out, and stood in the door of their tents, and their wives, and their sons, and their little children.

And they removed themselves from around the dwelling of Korach, Dathan, and Aviram. And Dathan and Aviram went out standing [defiantly, to curse and to blaspheme] at the door of their tents, with their wives, their sons, and their little ones, [the fomenting of strife (unlike other transgressions) rendering even these susceptible to punishment by the Heavenly tribunal.]

Moshe said: “This is how you will know that Adonoy has sent me to perform all of these deeds, for, I did not devise them myself.

And Moshe said, Hereby you shall know that the Lord has sent me to do all these works; for I have not done them of my own mind.

And Moses said: By this shall you know that the L-rd sent me to do all these things [viz., to make Aaron high-priest; his sons, deputy priests, and Eltzafan (ben Uziel), the chief of the Kehathi], and that I did not do so of my own volition.

If as all men die will these men meet their deaths, and the reckoning (fate) of all men will be reckoned upon them, then Adonoy has not sent me.

If these men die the common death of all men, or if they be visited after the visitation of all men; then the Lord has not sent me.

If as the death of all men these (men) will die and the fate of all men overtake them, then the L-rd has not sent me, [(but I will have acted of my own volition and he justly challenges me.)]

If Adonoy will create a [new] creation and the ground will open its mouth and swallow them along with all of their belongings, and they will go down alive to the grave, then you will know that these men have angered Adonoy.”

But if the Lord creates a new thing, and the earth opens her mouth, and swallows them up, with all that appertain to them, and they go down alive into She᾽ol; then you shall understand that these men have provoked the Lord.

But if the L-rd creates a [new] creation [a new kind of death], and the earth opens its mouth and swallows them and all that is theirs, and they descend, living, to Sheol — then you will know that these men have rebelled against the L-rd [and that I have acted as His agent].

As he was finishing speaking all these words the ground beneath them split.

And it came to pass, as he had made an end of speaking all these words, that the ground split beneath them:

And it was, when he had finished speaking all of these things, that the earth split, which was beneath them.

The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them and their houses and all the people belonging to Korach and all of the possessions.

and the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up, and their houses, and all the men that appertained to Qoraĥ, and all their goods.

And the earth opened its mouth and swallowed up them and their houses and all the men that were with Korach and all of the wealth.

They, and all belonging to them, went down alive to the grave, and the earth covered them and they perished from among the assembly.

They, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into She᾽ol, and the earth closed upon them: and they perished from among the congregation.

And they descended — they and all that was theirs — living, to Sheol. And the earth covered them, and they were lost from the midst of the congregation.

All of Yisroel who were around them fled from their uproar, for they said, perhaps the earth will swallow us.

And all Yisra᾽el that were round about them fled at the cry of them: for they said, Lest the earth swallow us up also.

And all of Israel that were around them fled at their sound [the sound of their being swallowed up], saying: Lest the earth swallow us.

A fire came forth from Adonoy and consumed the two hundred and fifty men who were bringing the incense.

And there came out a fire from the Lord, and consumed the two hundred and fifty men that offered the incense.

And a fire went forth from the L-rd and consumed the two hundred and fifty men, the presenters of the incense.
