Yisroel settled in Shittim and the people [of Yisroel] began acting promiscuously with the daughters of Moav.

And Yisra᾽el abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit harlotry with the daughters of Mo᾽av.

And Israel dwelt in Shittim, and the people began to stray after the daughters of Moav [(a result of Bilam's counsel)].

They [girls of Moav] invited the people [of Yisroel] to their idolatrous sacrifices; and the people ate and prostrated themselves before their gods.

And they called the people to the sacrifices of their gods: and the people ate, and bowed down to their gods.

And they [the Moavite women] called the people to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people ate, and they bowed down to their gods [(the Moavite women making this a condition for their consenting)].

Yisroel became united with Ba’al Pe’or; and the rage of Adony flared against Yisroel.

And Yisra᾽el joined himself to Ba῾al-pe῾or: and the anger of the Lord was kindled against Yisra᾽el.

And Israel joined itself to Ba'al Peor (the idolatry of Moav) [so called because they exposed (pa'aru) themselves and defecated before it (this being its mode of worship)], and the L-rd was wroth with Israel. [He sent a plague against them.]

Adonoy said to Moshe: “Take all the leaders of the people and hang them, before Adonoy, facing the sun; thereby removing the rage of Adony against Yisroel.”

And the Lord said to Moshe, Take all the chiefs of the people, and hang them up before the Lord against the sun, that the burning anger of the Lord may be turned away from Yisra᾽el.

And the L-rd said to Moses: Take all the heads of the people [to judge the worshippers of Peor] and hang them [the worshippers] up to the L-rd [after stoning them (all who are executed by stoning being hanged thereafter)] in the face of the sun [i.e., before all] so that the wrath of the L-rd turn away from Israel.

Moshe said to the judges of Yisroel: “Each of you must execute his men who were united with Ba’al Pe’or.”

And Moshe said to the judges of Yisra᾽el, Slay every one his men that have attached themselves to Ba῾al-pe῾or.

And Moses said to the judges [88,000] of Israel: Slay each (of you) his [two] men that have joined themselves to Ba'al Peor.

And behold, a man came from among Bnei Yisroel, and brought the Midianite woman to his brethren, before the eyes of Moshe and before the eyes of the entire congregation of Yisroel, who were weeping at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting.

And, behold, one of the children of Yisra᾽el came and brought to his brethren a Midyanite woman in the sight of Moshe, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Yisra᾽el, who were weeping before the door of the Tent of Meeting.

And, behold, a man of the children of Israel [Zimri, chief of the tribe of Shimon] came, and he brought near to his brothers the Midianite woman [Kazbi, the daughter of Tzur] in the sight of Moses and in the sight of the entire congregation of the children of Israel, and they wept at the door of the tent of meeting [(at Moses' seeming impotence to stand up against one man whereas in the incident of the golden calf he had stood up against six hundred thousand! When he saw this—Pinchas the son of Elazar [and grand]son of Aharon the Kohein—he rose up from the midst of the community and took a spear in his hand.

And when Pineĥas, the son of El῾azar, the son of Aharon the priest, saw it, he rose up from among the congregation, and took a spear in his hand;

And Pinchas, the son of Elazar, the son of Aaron the Cohein, saw [the act, and he remembered the halachah (that zealots may kill one they see cohabiting with an Aramite woman)], and he arose from the midst of the congregation and he took a spear in his hand.

He followed the Israelite man into the inner chamber of the tent and pierced both of them through—the Israelite man and the woman through her belly—and the plague stopped from [afflicting] the Bnei Yisroel.

and he went after the man of Yisra᾽el into the chamber, and thrust both of them through, the man of Yisra᾽el, and the woman through her belly. So the plague was stayed from the children of Yisra᾽el.

And he came after the man of Israel to the tent and he thrust both of them through, the man of Israel [precisely through his genitals] and the woman [precisely] through her genitals [so that all see that he had not slain them for nought], and the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.

Those that died in the plague, [numbered] twenty-four thousand.

And those that died in the plague were twenty four thousand.

And the dead in the plague were twenty-four thousand.

Adonoy spoke to Moshe saying.

And the Lord spoke to Moshe, saying,

And the L-rd spoke to Moses, saying:

“Pinchas, the son of Elozor, [and grand] son of Aharon the kohein, has turned My anger away from Bnei Yisroel by his vengeance for Me among them, so that I did not destroy Bnei Yisroel in My vengeance.

Pineĥas, the son of El῾azar, the son of Aharon the priest, has turned my wrath away from the children of Yisra᾽el, in that he was zealous for my sake among them, that I consumed not the children of Yisra᾽el in my jealousy.

Pinchas, the son of Elazar, the son of Aaron the Cohein, [(Because the tribes denigrated Pinchas — "Did you see the son of this Puti (short for Putiel (Exodus 6:25), whose mother's father (Yithro) fattened (pitem) calves for idolatry, who killed the chief (Zimri) of a tribe of Israel!" — Scripture took pains to trace his genealogy to Aaron)], (Pinchas) turned My wrath away from the children of Israel when he raged My rage [i.e., when he executed vengeance on My behalf] in their midst, and I did not consume the children of Israel in My wrath.

Therefore tell [him], that I give him My covenant [of] peace.

Wherefore say, Behold, I give to him my covenant of peace:

Therefore, say: Behold, I give to him My covenant [to be unto him a covenant of] peace.

It shall be for him and his descendants after him a covenant of eternal kehunah because he was zealous for his God and made atonement for Bnei Yisroel.”

and he shall have it, and his seed after him, the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was zealous for his God, and made atonement for the children of Yisra᾽el.

And it shall be unto him and to his seed after him a covenant of eternal priesthood [(Prior to this, the priesthood had been given only to Aaron and his sons who were anointed with him and to their sons born thereafter, but Pinchas had been born before)] — because he was wroth for his G-d and he atoned for the children of Israel.

The name of the slain Israelite man, who was killed along with the Midianite woman, was Zimri, son of Salu, leader of a paternal house of Shimon.

Now the name of the man of Yisra᾽el that was slain, that was slain with the Midyanite woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a father’s house among the Shim῾oni.

And the name of the man of Israel who was smitten, who was smitten together with the Midianite woman, was Zimri the son of Salu [(As the righteous one is cited for commendation, the wicked one is cited for condemnation)], chief of a father's house [one of the five] in the house of Shimon.

The name of the slain Midianite woman was Kozbi, daughter of Tzur, the national leader of a paternal house in Midian.

And the name of the Midyanite woman that was slain was Kozbi, the daughter of Żur; he was head over the people of a father’s house in Midyan.

And the name of the woman who was smitten, the Midianitess, was Kazbi the daughter of Tzur; head of the peoples [chief of the five kings of Midian], of a father's house [one of the five] in Midian was he [ — in spite of which, the Midianites, in their fierce hatred of Israel, consigned her to harlotry].

Adonoy spoke to Moshe saying:

And the Lord spoke to Moshe, saying,

And the L-rd spoke to Moses, saying:

“Antagonize the Midianites and kill them,

Vex the Midyanim, and smite them:

Afflict the Midianites and smite them.

for they antagonized you with their guiles in the matter of Pe’or, and in the matter of Kozbi the daughter of a Midianite prince, their sister, who was killed on the day of the plague that resulted from Pe’or.”

for they vex you with their wiles, with which they have beguiled you in the matter of Pe῾or, and in the matter of Kozbi, the daughter of a prince of Midyan, their sister, who was slain in the day of the plague in the affair of Pe῾or.

For they afflict you with their schemes which they have schemed against you in the cause of Peor, [consigning their daughters to harlotry to turn you to Peor worship], and in the cause of Kazbi, the daughter of a prince of Midian, their sister, who was smitten in the day of the plague in the cause of Peor.
