These are the descendants of Aharon and Moshe on the day that Adonoy spoke to Moshe on Mount Sinai.

These also are the generations of Aharon and Moshe in the day that the Lord spoke with Moshe in mount Sinay.

And these are the generations of Aaron and Moses [(Even though only the sons of Aaron are mentioned, they are called "the generations of Moses" because he taught them Torah (whence it is derived that if one teaches his friend's son Torah, it is as if he had begotten him)], on the day the L-rd spoke to Moses on Mount Sinai [i.e., on that day they became his "generations," for he taught them what he had learned from the Almighty.]

These are the names of Aharon’s sons; the firstborn, Nadav, and Avihu, Elazar and Isamar.

And these are the names of the sons of Aharon; Nadav the firstborn, and Avihu, El῾azar and Itamar.

And these are the names of the sons of Aaron: the first-born — Nadav; and Avihu, Elazar, and Ithamar.

These are the names of Aharon’s sons, the anointed kohanim, whose hands are occupied with bringing offerings, to serve [God].

These are the names of the sons of Aharon, the priests who were anointed, whom he consecrated to minister in the priest’s office.

These are the names of the sons of Aaron, the anointed Cohanim, whom he invested to minister.

Nadav and Avihu died in the presence of Adonoy, when they offered a strange fire-offering before Adonoy, in the Sinai desert, and they had no sons. [However] Elazar and Isamar served in the presence of their father Aharon.

And Nadav and Avihu died before the Lord, when they offered strange fire before the Lord, in the wilderness of Sinay, and they had no children: and El῾azar and Itamar ministered in the priest’s office in the sight of Aharon their father.

And Nadav and Avihu died before the L-rd when they presented a strange fire before the L-rd in the desert of Sinai, and they had no sons. And Elazar and Ithamar ministered in the presence [i.e., in the lifetime] of Aaron their father.

Adonoy spoke to Moshe, saying;

And the Lord spoke to Moshe saying,

And the L-rd spoke to Moses, saying:

Bring the tribe of Levi near and have it stand before Aharon the kohein, and they shall serve him.

Bring the tribe of Levi near, and present them before Aharon the priest, that they may minister to him.

Bring near the tribe of Levi and place them before Aaron the Cohein, that they serve him.

They shall take care to preserve his guardianship and the guardianship of the entire congregation before the Tent of Meeting, to serve in the service of the Mishkon.

And they shall keep his charge, and the charge of the whole congregation before the Tent of Meeting, to do the service of the tabernacle.

[And what is this service?] They shall keep his charge [that no stranger come near (to the holy things; the Levites assisted him in this)] and the charge of the entire congregation before the tent of meeting to perform the service of the mishkan.

They shall guard all the utensils of the Tent of Meeting and the watch of Bnei Yisroel to serve in the service of the Mishkon.

And they shall keep all the instruments of the Tent of Meeting, and the charge of the children of Yisra᾽el, to do the service of the tabernacle.

And they shall guard all the vessels of the tent of meeting and (they shall keep) the charge of the children of Israel to perform the service of the mishkan. [The service of the mishkan devolved upon all of Israel, and the Levites became their emissaries for it (in payment for which they give the tithe to the Levites)].

You shall place the Levites in the charge of Aharon and his sons; they are presented to him from [among] Bnei Yisroel.

And thou shalt give the Levites to Aharon and to his sons: they are wholly given to him out of the children of Yisra᾽el.

And you shall give the Levites to Aaron and to his sons. They are given to him [i.e., separated unto him by the L-rd's decree] from the [midst of the] children of Israel.

You shall appoint Aharon and his sons and they shall guard their priesthood, and an outsider (non-kohein) who comes near shall be put to death.

And thou shalt appoint Aharon and his sons, and they shall keep their priest’s office: and the stranger that comes near shall be put to death.

And Aaron and his sons shall you charge that they guard their priesthood [(receiving the blood, sprinkling, smoking, and the services relegated to the priests)], and the stranger that draws near shall be put to death.

Adonoy spoke to Moshe, saying;

And the Lord spoke to Moshe, saying,

And the L-rd spoke to Moses, saying:

Behold! I have taken the Levites from among Bnei Yisroel instead of all the firstborn who have opened the womb, among Bnei Yisroel, and [therefore] the Levites shall be Mine.

And I, behold, I have taken the Levites from among the children of Yisra᾽el instead of all the firstborn that opens the womb among the children of Yisra᾽el: therefore the Levites shall be mine;

And I, behold, I have taken the Levites from the midst of the children of Israel, [that the Israelites hire them for My service. And whence comes this "prerogative" of Mine?] In place of every first-born, opener of the womb, of the children of Israel, [i.e., The service originally devolved upon the first-born, and when they sinned with the golden calf, the Levites, who did not sin, were selected in their place.] And the Levites shall be Mine.

For all the firstborn are Mine, since on the day I smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt I sanctified to Me all the firstborn of Bnei Yisroel from man to beast; they shall be Mine, I am Adonoy.

because all the firstborn are mine; for on the day that I smote all the firstborn in the land of Miżrayim I hallowed to me all the firstborn in Yisra᾽el, both man and beast: mine shall they be: I am the Lord.

For Mine is every first-born. On the day I smote every first-born in the land of Egypt, I sanctified unto Me every first-born in Israel, from man until beast. Mine shall they be — I am the L-rd.

Adonoy spoke to Moshe in the Sinai desert, saying;

And the Lord spoke to Moshe in the wilderness of Sinay, saying,

And the L-rd spoke to Moses in the desert of Sinai, saying:

Count the sons of Levi according to their fathers’ houses according to their families. All males from the age of one month and above, you shall count them.

Number the children of Levi after the house of their fathers, by their families: every male from a month old and upward shalt thou number them.

Number the children of Levi, by their fathers' house, by their families. Every male, from one month and above [(after they have left the category of nefalim (non-viable births)] shall you number them. [He is numbered to be called "a keeper of the charge of the sanctuary" (3:28). (The Levites are "conversant" in being numbered from the womb, e.g., Yocheved, the daughter of Levi (see 26:59)].

Moshe counted them according to the word of Adonoy, just as he was commanded.

And Moshe numbered them according to the word of the Lord, as he was commanded.

And Moses numbered them by word of the L-rd as he had been commanded. [A heavenly voice would come to Moses from the door of each tent, saying: So many and so many infants are in this tent.]

These were sons of Levi according to their names, Gershon, Kehos and Merori.

And these were the sons of Levi by their names; Gershon, and Qehat, and Merari.

And these were the sons of Levi by their names: Gershon, Kehath, and Merari.

These are the names of Gershon’s sons according to their families; Livni and Shim’i.

And these are the names of the sons of Gershon by their families; Livni, and Shim῾i.

And these are the names of the sons of Gershon by their families: Livni and Shimi.

The sons of Kehos, according to their families were; Amram, Yitzhar Chevron and Uziel.

And the sons of Qehat by their families; ῾Amram, and Yiżhar, Ḥevron, and ῾Uzzi᾽el.

And the sons of Kehath by their families: Amram and Yitzhar, Chevron and Uziel.

The sons of Merori, according to their families were; Machli and Mushi. These are the families of Levi according to their fathers’ houses.

And the sons of Merari by their families; Maĥli, and Mushi. These are the families of the Levites according to the house of their fathers.

And the sons of Merari by their families: Machli and Mushi. These are the families of the Levites by their fathers' house.

Of Gershon, the family of Livni and the family of Shim’i. These are the families of the Gershonites.

Of Gershon was the family of the Livni, and the family of the Shim῾i: these are the families of the Gershoni.

Unto Gershon [were numbered] the family of the Livni and the family of the Shimi. These are the families of the Gershuni.

Their numbers, in a count of every male of one month and above; their numbers are seven thousand five hundred.

Those that were numbered of them, according to the number of all the males, from a month old and upward, even those that were numbered of them were seven thousand five hundred.

Their numbered, the number of all the males from one month and above: seven thousand and five hundred.

The families of the Gershonites shall camp behind the Mishkon on the west side.

The families of the Gershoni shall pitch behind the tabernacle westward.

The families of the Gershuni were to encamp behind the mishkan, on the west.

The leader of the household of the Gershonites is Elyasaf the son of Lael.

And the chief of the house of the father of the Gershoni shall be Elyasaf the son of La᾽el.

And the chief of the fathers' house of the Gershuni, Elyasaf ben La'el.

The guardianship of the sons of Gershon in the Tent of Meeting [was]; the Mishkon and the Tent, its cover and the Curtain for the entrance of the Tent of Meeting,

And the charge of the sons of Gershon in the Tent of Meeting shall be the tabernacle, and the tent, its covering, and the screen for the door of the Tent of Meeting,

And the charge of the sons of Gershon in the tent of meeting: the mishkan [the lower curtains] and the tent [the goats' hair curtains, which served as a roof], its covering [the hides of the rams and the techashim] and the partition for the door of the tent of meeting [the vilon].

The hanging Curtains of the courtyard and the Curtain at the entrance of the courtyard which is around the Mishkon and Altar, and its ropes, for all of the work involving these things.

and the hangings of the court, and the screen for the door of the court, which is by the tabernacle, and by the altar round about, and the cords of it for all its service.

And the hangings of the court, and the partition for the door of the court, which is by the mishkan and by the altar roundabout, and its cords [(those of the mishkan and of the tent, but not those of the court)], for all of its service.

Of Kehos, was the family of Amram, the family of Yitzhar, the family of Chevron and the family of Uziel, these are the families of the Kehosites.

And of Qehat was the family of the ῾Amrami, and the family of the Yiżhari, and the family of the Ḥevroni, and the family of the ῾Uzzi’eli: these are the families of the Qehati.

And unto Kehath [were numbered] the family of the Amrami, and the family of the Yitzhari, and the family of the Chevroni, and the family of the Azieli. These are the families of the Kehathi.

The number of every male from one month and above is eight thousand six hundred. [They were] the guardians of the sacred vessels.

In the number of all the males, from a month old and upward, were eight thousand, six hundred, keeping the charge of the sanctuary.

The number of all the males from one month and above: eight thousand and six hundred, keepers of the charge of the sanctuary.

The families of the children of Kehos shall camp on the south side of the Mishkon.

The families of the sons of Qehat shall pitch on the side of the tabernacle southward.

The families of the sons of Kehath were to encamp at the side of the mishkan on the south.

The leader of the household of the families of the Kehosites, is Elitzafan the son of Uziel.

And the chief of the house of the father of the families of the Qehati shall be Eliżafan, the son of ῾Uzzi᾽el.

And the chief of the fathers' house of the families of the Kehathi, Elitzafan ben Uziel.

Their guardianship is the Ark, the Table, the Menorah, the Altars and the sacred utensils with which they serve. And the Curtain, and all of the work involving these things.

And their charge shall be the ark, and the table, and the candlestick, and the altars, and the vessels of the sanctuary with which they minister, and the screen, and all its service.

And their charge: the ark and the table and the menorah and the altars, and the ministering vessels of the sanctuary, and the partition (masach) [the parocheth, which is also called "parocheth hamasach" (Exodus 35:52)], and all of its service.

The leader of the leaders of Levi shall be Elazar, the son of Aharon, the kohein [who is] in charge of the appointment of the guardians to safeguard the holy [Sanctuary].

And El῾azar the son of Aharon the priest shall be chief over the chiefs of the Levites, and have the oversight of them that keep the charge of the sanctuary.

And the chief of the chiefs of the Levites, Elazar the son of Aaron the Cohein, [this charge being] the appointment of the keepers of the sanctuary.

Of Merori, was the family of Machli and the family and Mushi; these are the families of the Merorites.

Of Merari was the family of the Maĥli, and the family of the Mushi: these are the families of Merari.

Unto Merari [were numbered] the family of the Machli, and the family of the Mushi. These are the families of Merari.

Their numbers, in a count of every male of one month and above, is six thousand two hundred.

And those that were numbered of them, according to the number of all the males, from a month old and upward, were six thousand two hundred.

And their numbered, the number of all the males from one month and above, six thousand and two hundred.

The leader of the household of the families of the Merorites is Tzuriel the son of Avichail, they shall camp on the north side of the Mishkon.

And the chief of the house of the father of the families of Merari was Żuri᾽el the son of Aviĥayil: these shall pitch on the side of the tabernacle northward.

And the chief of the father's house of the families of Merari, Tzuriyel ben Avichayil. At the side of the mishkan they were to encamp, on the north.

The appointed task of the guardianship of the sons of Merori shall be the beams of the Mishkon, its bars, pillars and sockets; all of its utensils, and all of the work involving these things.

And under the custody and charge of the sons of Merari shall be the boards of the tabernacle, and its bars, and its pillars, and its sockets, and all its vessels, and all that belongs to it.

And the appointed charge of the sons of Merari: the beams of the mishkan and its bars, and its pillars, and its sockets, and all of its vessels, and all of its service.

Also the pillars of the surrounding courtyard and their sockets, pegs and ropes.

And the pillars of the court round about, and their sockets, and their pegs, and their cords.

And the pillars of the court roundabout, and their sockets, and their pegs, and their cords.

Those who camped in front of the Mishkon in the forefront, in front of the Tent of Meeting on the east side [are]; Moshe, Aharon and his sons, guardians of the guardianship of the Sanctuary to guard on behalf of Bnei Yisroel. Any outsider (non-kohein) who comes near, shall be put to death.

But those that encamp before the tabernacle toward the east, before the Tent of Meeting eastward, shall be Moshe and Aharon and his sons, keeping the charge of the sanctuary for the charge of the children of Yisra᾽el; and the stranger that comes near shall be put to death.

And those who encamped before the mishkan, in front, before the tent of meeting, on the east — Moses, and Aaron, and his sons, keeping the charge of the sanctuary, for the charge of the children of Israel [see 8]; and the stranger that draws near shall be put to death.

The number of all the Levites whom Moshe and Aharon counted at the word of Adonoy according to their families; every male from one month and above was twenty-two thousand.

All that were numbered of the Levites, whom Moshe and Aharon numbered at the commandment of the Lord, by their families, all the males from a month old and upward, were twenty two thousand.

All the numbered of the Levites, whom Moses and Aaron numbered [(The dots over "Aharon" indicate that he was not included in the count of the Levites)] by word of the L-rd, by their families, all the males from one month and above — twenty-two thousand. [(Actually 22,300; but 300 of the Levites were themselves bechoroth (first-born), so that they are not included in the count, which is the number of those Levites who displaced bechoroth (and does not include those who were bechoroth themselves (see 46-48)].

Adonoy said to Moshe: Count every male firstborn of Bnei Yisroel from the age of one month and above and take the number of their names.

And the Lord said to Moshe, Number all the firstborn of the males of the children of Yisra᾽el from a month old and upward, and take the number of their names.

And the L-rd said to Moses: Number all the first-born males of the children of Israel [(after they have left the category of nefalim — see 3:15)], from one month and above, and take the number of their names.

You shall take the Levites for Me, I, [who am] Adonoy, instead of every firstborn of Bnei Yisroel; and the animals of the Levites instead of every firstborn among the animals of Bnei Yisroel.

And thou shalt take the Levites for me (I am the Lord) instead of all the firstborn among the children of Yisra᾽el; and the cattle of the Levites instead of all the firstlings among the cattle of the children of Yisra᾽el.

And you shall take the Levites for Me — I am the L-rd — in place of all the first-born of the children of Israel, and the beasts of the Levites in place of all the firstlings of the beasts of the children of Israel.

Moshe counted just as Adonoy commanded him to, every firstborn of Bnei Yisroel.

And Moshe numbered, as the Lord commanded him, all the firstborn among the children of Yisra᾽el.

And Moses numbered, as the L-rd commanded him, all the first-born of the children of Israel.

Every male firstborn according to the number of names of one month and above according to their numbers, was twenty-two thousand two hundred and seventy-three.

And all the firstborn males by the number of names, from a month old and upward, of those that were numbered of them, were twenty two thousand, two hundred and seventy three.

And all the male first-born were, by number of names, from one month and above, of those that were numbered — twenty-two thousand and two hundred and seventy-three.

Adonoy spoke to Moshe, saying:

And the Lord spoke to Moshe, saying,

And the L-rd spoke to Moses, saying:

Take the Levites instead of every firstborn of Bnei Yisroel, and the animals of the Levites instead of their animals, and the Levites shall be Mine, I am Adonoy.

Take the Levites instead of all the firstborn among the children of Yisra᾽el, and the cattle of the Levites instead of their cattle; and the Levites shall be mine: I am the Lord.

Take the Levites in place of all the first-born of the children of Israel, and the beasts of the Levites in place of their beasts, [the firstling of asses (One lamb of a Levite would redeem many ass-firstlings of Israelites)], and the Levites shall be Mine — I am the L-rd.

And the redemption of the two hundred and seventy-three that are in excess of the number of Levites from the firstborns of Bnei Yisroel.

And for those that are to be redeemed of the two hundred and seventy three of the firstborn of the children of Yisra᾽el who are more than the Levites:

And (for) the redemption (money) of the two hundred and seventy-three of the bechoroth of the children of Israel over and above the (number of the) Levites,

You shall take five shekolim apiece from each individual; you shall take it in holy shekolim at twenty gerah for each shekel.

thou shalt take five shekels for every man, after the shekel of the sanctuary shalt thou take them: (the shekel is twenty gera:)

You shall take five shekels for a head. By the shekel of the sanctuary shall you take it, twenty gerah to the shekel.

You shall give the money to Aharon and to his sons as a redemption for those whose numbers are in excess [of the Levites.]

and thou shalt give the money, with which the surplus of them is to be redeemed, to Aharon and to his sons.

And you shall give the money to Aaron and to his sons, the redemption (money) of the excess of them [the bechoroth, over the Levites].

Moshe took the redemption money from those whose numbers were in excess of those who were redeemed through the Levites.

And Moshe took the redemption money of those who were over and above those who were redeemed by the Levites:

And Moses took the redemption money from those (bechoroth) who exceeded the (bechoroth) redeemed [bodily] by the Levites.

From the firstborn of Bnei Yisroel, he took the money. One thousand three hundred sixty-five, in holy shekel.

of the firstborn of the children of Yisra᾽el he took the money; a thousand three hundred and sixty five shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary:

[By ballot] from [two hundred and seventy-three] bechoroth of the children of Israel, he took the money — one thousand and three hundred and sixty-five (shekels) by the shekel of the sanctuary.

Moshe gave the money of those who were redeemed to Aharon and to his sons according to the word of Adonoy, just as Adonoy commanded to Moshe.

and Moshe gave the money of those who were redeemed to Aharon and to his sons, according to the word of the Lord, as the Lord had commanded Moshe.

And Moses gave the money of the redeemed to Aaron and to his sons by the word of the L-rd, as the L-rd had commanded Moses.
