Adonoy spoke to Moshe, saying.

And the Lord spoke to Moshe saying,

And the L-rd spoke to Moses, saying:

“Take revenge for Bnei Yisroel against the Midianites, afterward, you shall be gathered to your people (die).”

Execute the vengeance of the children of Yisra᾽el on the Midyanim: afterwards thou shalt be gathered to thy people.

Take the revenge of the children of Israel from the Midianites [(but not from the Moavites, the latter having been motivated by fear of Israel's plundering them, but the former having entered into a quarrel which was not theirs)]; afterwards you will be gathered unto your people.

Moshe spoke to the people, saying: “Arm men from among yourselves for the army and they will be against Midian, to bring revenge of Adonoy against Midian.

And Moshe spoke to the people, saying, Arm from yourselves men for the army, and let them go against Midyan and avenge the Lord on Midyan.

And Moses spoke to the people [(with joy, though his death was attendant upon the defeat of Midian)], saying: Arm from yourselves men [tzaddikim] for the host, and let them be against Midian to execute the vengeance of the L-rd against Midian [(opposing Israel being tantamount to opposing the L-rd)].

One thousand from each tribe, one thousand from each tribe, for all of the tribes of Yisroel, you shall send into the army.”

Of every tribe a thousand, throughout all the tribes of Yisra᾽el, shall you send to the war.

A thousand to a tribe, a thousand to a tribe, of all the tribes of Israel [including the tribe of Levi] shall you send to the host.

They were handed over from among the thousands of Yisroel, one thousand from each tribe, twelve thousand armed men for the army.

So there were delivered out of the thousands of Yisra᾽el, a thousand of every tribe, twelve thousand armed for war.

And there were handed over [(perforce)] of the thousands of Israel, [(the men, knowing that Moses' death was attendant upon the defeat of Midian, refusing to come forward on their own)], a thousand to a tribe, twelve thousand men armed for the host.

Moshe sent, one thousand from each tribe to the army, them, and Pinchas, son of Elozor the kohein to the army, with the sacred vessels and the trumpets in his hand.

And Moshe sent them to the war, a thousand of every tribe, them and Pineĥas the son of El῾azar the priest, to the war, with the holy instruments, and the trumpets to blow in his hand.

And Moses sent them, a thousand to a tribe, to the host, them and Pinchas the son of Elazar the Cohein to the host, [Pinchas being "equivalent" to all of them, (and Pinchas going rather than Elazar in that he began the mitzvah (of executing vengeance against Midian) by having slain Kazbi, the daughter of Tzur)], and the holy articles [the ark and the tzitz] and the trumpets of teruah in his hand [i.e., with him].

They mounted a campaign against Midian, as Adonoy had commanded Moshe, and they killed every male.

And they warred against Midyan, as the Lord commanded Moshe, and they slew all the males.

And they warred against Midian as the L-rd had commanded Moses, and they killed every male.

They killed the Midianite kings upon those they had slain: Evi, Rekem, Tzur, Chur and Reva—[the] five kings of Midian. And Bil’am son of Beor they killed with the sword.

And they slew the kings of Midyan, beside the rest of them that were slain; namely, Evi, and Reqem, and Żur, and Ḥur, and Reva, five kings of Midyan: Bil῾am also the son of Be῾or they slew with the sword.

And the kings of Midian they killed, [causing them to fall] upon their slain: Evi and Rekem, and Tzur, and Chur, and Reva, the five kings of Midian ["of one counsel (against Israel) and of one death"]; and Bilam the son of Beor they slew by the sword [("He exchanged his trade for theirs (desiring to destroy Israel by speech), and they exchanged their trade for his" (killing him by the sword)].

Bnei Yisroel took captive the Midianite women and their children. All their livestock, flocks and wealth they took as booty.

And the children of Yisra᾽el took all the women of Midyan captives, and their little ones, and took the spoil of all their cattle, and all their flocks, and all their goods.

And the children of Israel took captive the women of Midian; and their little ones and all of their beasts and all of their cattle and all of their goods they took as spoil.

All their residential cities and palaces they set on fire.

And they burnt all the cities in which they dwelt, and all their encampments, with fire.

And all of their cities where they dwelt, and all of their cloisters [the dwellings of their priests] they burned with fire.

They took all the booty, all that had been seized, of man and livestock,

And they took all the spoil, and all the prey, both of men and of beasts.

And they took all of the spoil, and all of the booty, of man and of beast.

And they brought to Moshe and to Elozor the kohein and to the entire community of Bnei Yisroel, the captives, and all that had been seized, and the booty, to the camp, at the plains of Moav, which was by the Yardein near Yereicho.

And they brought the captives, and the prey, and the spoil, to Moshe, and El῾azar the priest, and to the congregation of the children of Yisra᾽el, to the camp at the plains of Mo᾽av, which are by Yarden near Yereĥo.

And they [took nothing for themselves, but] brought to Moses, and to Elazar the Cohein, and to the congregation of the children of Israel: the captivity [the people], and the booty [the animals], and the spoils [clothing and ornaments], to the camp in the plains of Moav by the Jordan (near) Jericho.

They went out—Moshe, Elozor the kohein and the princes of the community—to greet them outside the camp.

And Moshe, and El῾azar the priest, and all the princes of the congregation, went out to meet them outside the camp.

And Moses and Elazar the Cohein and all the chiefs of the congregation went out to them outside the encampment, [seeing the youth of Israel going out to snatch the spoils].

Moshe was angry with the commanders of the army, at the officers of the thousands and at the officers of the hundreds who had returned from the army service of the war.

And Moshe was angry with the officers of the host, the captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, who came from the battle.

And Moses was wroth with the commanders of the host [("The leaders, failing to protest, are accountable for the sins of the generation")], the officers of the thousands, and the officers of the hundreds, who came from the host of battle.

Moshe said to them: “Did you let every female live?

And Moshe said to them, Have you saved all the women alive?

And Moses said to them: Have you let all the females live!

They were the very same ones who, on Bila’m’s advice were involved with Bnei Yisroel to cause them to commit a betrayal against Adonoy regarding the matter of Pe’or, so that the plague broke out within the community of Adonoy.

Behold, these caused the children of Yisra᾽el, through the counsel of Bil῾am, to revolt against the Lord in the matter of Pe῾or, and there was a plague among the congregation of the Lord.

These are the women [(They recognized the particular women with whom particular men had sinned)] who were [consigned to harlotry] to the children of Israel by the counsel of Bilam to commit perfidy against the L-rd in the affair of Peor, bringing the plague upon the congregation of the L-rd.

Now execute every male among the children, and every woman with intimate knowledge of a man, you shall execute.

Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that has known man by lying with him.

And now, kill every male among the little ones; and every woman [capable of] knowing a man for carnal relations, kill.

All the children among the females without intimate knowledge of a man, keep alive for yourselves.

But all the women children, that have not known man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves.

And all the little ones among the women who did not know carnal relations, keep alive for yourselves.

You shall remain outside the camp for seven days. Whoever has killed a person or touched a corpse, purify yourselves, on the third day and on the seventh day, you and your captives.

And abide outside the camp seven days: whoever has killed any person, and whoever has touched any slain, purify both yourselves and your captives on the third day, and on the seventh day.

And you, abide outside the camp [the azarah] seven days. Whoever has killed a man [by striking him with a weapon susceptible of uncleanliness] and whoever has touched a slain one shall you cleanse [with the sprinkling waters (of the red heifer)] on the third day and on the seventh day, you and your captives [who become unclean after they are proselytized].

Every garment, every leather article, everything made of goat products and every wooden article shall undergo such purification.”

And purify every garment, and all that is made of skins, and all work of goats’ hair, and all things made of wood.

And every garment, and every vessel of skin, and every work of goats [including vessels made from horns or hooves or bones], and every vessel of wood shall you cleanse.

Elozor the kohein said to the soldiers who came to the war: “This is the statute of the Torah which Adonoy commanded Moshe.

And El῾azar the priest said to the men of war which went to the battle, This is the ordinance of the Tora which the Lord commanded Moshe;

And Elazar the Cohein said to the men of the host who came to the war [(Moses, by giving vent to anger (14), having forgotten the halachah)]: This is the statute of the Torah which the L-rd commanded Moses, [Elazar attributing the ruling to his teacher].

Only the gold, silver, copper, iron, tin and lead,

only the gold, and the silver, the brass, the iron, the tin, and the lead,

But [you may not use vessels, even after they have been cleansed from dead-body uncleanliness, until they are cleansed from carrion absorption] — the gold and the silver, the copper, the iron, the tin and the lead —

Anything placed [of these materials] on a fire, you must pass through fire, and it will be purified; however, it must be purified with sprinkling water. But anything [of these materials] that was not placed on a fire you may pass through water.

every thing that passes through the fire, you shall make it go through the fire, and it shall be clean: nevertheless it shall be purified with the water of sprinkling: and all that does not pass through the fire shall you make to go through water.

Every thing that comes into the fire [to cook something in it] shall you pass through the fire [to cleanse it from carrion absorption, (vessels being cleansed according to the manner of their use)], and it shall be clean [of carrion uncleanliness]; but with the sprinkling waters shall it be cleansed [of dead-body uncleanliness]. And every thing that does not come into the fire, [such as cups and flasks, which are used for cold things and do not absorb forbidden matter] shall you pass through water [i.e., it is sufficient to immerse them].

You shall immerse your garments on the seventh day and become purified; afterward you may come into the camp.”

And you shall wash your clothes on the seventh day, and you shall be clean, and afterwards you shall come into the camp.

And you shall wash your garments on the seventh day and you shall be clean, and then you shall come to the camp [the camp of the Shechinah (one with dead-body uncleanliness not needing to be sent out of the Levite and Israeli camps)].

Adonoy spoke to Moshe, saying:

And the Lord spoke to Moshe saying,

And the L-rd said to Moses:

“Take count of the booty seized, of what was captured of the men and animals—you, together with Elozor the kohein, and the leaders of the community.

Take the sum of the prey that was taken, both of man and of beast, thou, and El῾azar the priest, and the chief fathers of the congregation:

Count the taking of the captivity in man and beast, you and Elazar the Cohein and the heads of the fathers of the congregation.

Divide in half the spoils seized among those who took the war in hand, who went into the army, and the entire community.

and divide the prey into two parts; between those who took the war upon them, who went out to battle, and between all the congregation:

And divide the booty between the warriors who went out to the host and the entire congregation [(half to the first, half to the second)].

Levy a tribute to Adonoy from the people of the army who went out to war, one living being out of five hundred from the people, cattle, donkeys and sheep.

and levy a tribute to the Lord of the men of war who went out to battle: one soul of five hundred, both of the persons, and of the beef cattle, and of the asses, and of the sheep:

And raise a tribute to the L-rd from the men of the war who went out to the host, one soul from the five hundred: from the people, from the herd, from the asses, and from the flock.

Take this from their half and give it to Elozor the kohein as a gift to Adonoy.

from their half shall you take it, and give it to El῾azar the priest, for an offering set apart to the Lord.

From their half shall you take it, and you shall give it to Elazar the Cohein, the terumah (offering) of the L-rd.

And from the half of the Bnei Yisroel, take one part out of fifty, of the people, cattle, donkeys, sheep, and of all the other animals, and give it to the Levites who are entrusted with the Mishkon of Adonoy.”

And of the children of Yisra᾽el’s half, thou shalt take one portion of fifty, of the persons, of the beef cattle, of the asses, and of the flocks, of all manner of beasts, and give them to the Levites, who keep the charge of the tabernacle of the Lord.

And from the half of the children of Israel shall you take one portion out of fifty: from the people, from the herd, from the asses, from the flock, from all of the beasts; and you shall give them to the Levites, keepers of the charge of the mishkan of the L-rd.

Moshe and Elozor the kohein did as Adonoy commanded Moshe.

And Moshe and El῾azar the priest did as the Lord commanded Moshe.

And Moses and Elazar the Cohein did as the L-rd had commanded Moses.

The spoil was—in addition to the booty that was taken by the army: 675,000

And the booty, being the rest of the prey which the men of war had caught, was six hundred and seventy five thousand sheep.

And the booty [of men and animals] was — aside from the spoils [of metaltelin (movable objects)], which the men of the host had taken for themselves — sheep, six hundred and seventy-five thousand.

72,000 cattle,

And seventy two thousand head of beef,

And cattle, seventy-two thousand.

61,000 donkeys,

and sixty one thousand asses,

And asses, sixty-one thousand.

And the number of women who did not have intimate relations with a man all the souls amounted to 32,000.

and thirty two thousand persons in all, of women that had not known man by lying with him.

And souls, of the women who had not had carnal relations, all of the souls, thirty-two thousand.

The half-portion of those who went in the army, the amount of sheep [was] 337,500

And the half, which was the portion of those who went out to war, was in number three hundred and thirty seven thousand, five hundred sheep:

And the (first) half was, the share of those who went out to the host: the number of sheep, three hundred and thirty-seven thousand and five hundred.

The tribute to Adonoy from the sheep, amounted to 675.

and the Lord’s tribute of the sheep was six hundred and seventy five.

And the tribute to the L-rd from the flock was six hundred and seventy-five.

From the 36,000 cattle the tribute to Adonoy amounted to 72.

And the beef cattle were thirty six thousand; of which the Lord’s tribute was seventy two.

And the cattle, thirty-six thousand; and their tribute to the L-rd, seventy-two.

From the 30,500 donkeys the tribute to Adonoy amounted to 61.

And the asses were thirty thousand, five hundred; of which the Lord’s tribute was sixty one.

And the asses, thirty thousand and five hundred; and their tribute to the L-rd, sixty-one.

From the 16,000 people the tribute to Adonoy amounted to 32 people.

And the persons were sixteen thousand; of which the Lord’s tribute was thirty two persons.

And souls, sixteen thousand; and their tribute to the L-rd, thirty-two souls.

Moshe gave the tribute as a gift to Adonoy, to Elozor the kohein, as Adonoy had commanded Moshe.

And Moshe gave the tribute, which was the Lord’s gift, to El῾azar the priest, as the Lord commanded Moshe.

And Moses gave the tribute, the terumah of the L-rd, to Elazar the Cohein, as the L-rd had commanded Moses.

From the half [designated] for Bnei Yisroel that Moshe divided from the men of the army:

And of the children of Yisra᾽el’s half, which Moshe divided from the men that warred,

And of the half of the children of Israel, which Moses had divided [for the congregation] from the men of the host —

The community’s half consisted of 337,500 sheep,

(now the half that pertained to the congregation was three hundred and thirty seven thousand, five hundred sheep,

The half of the congregation from the flock was three hundred and thirty-seven thousand and five hundred.

36,000 cattle,

and thirty six thousand head of beef,

And cattle, thirty-six thousand.

30,500 donkeys,

and thirty thousand five hundred asses,

And asses, thirty thousand and five hundred.

and 16,000 people.

and sixteen thousand persons;)

And souls, sixteen thousand.

Moshe took from Bnei Yisroel’s half, one part out of the fifty, from the people and from the animals, and gave them to the Levites who are entrusted with the Mishkon of Adonoy; as Adonoy had commanded Moshe.

and of the children of Yisra᾽el’s half, Moshe took one portion of fifty, both of man and of beast, and gave them to the Levites, who kept the charge of the tabernacle of the Lord; as the Lord commanded Moshe.

— And Moses took from the half of the children of Israel, one portion out of fifty, from the people and from the beasts, and he gave them to the Levites, keepers of the charge of the mishkan of the L-rd, as the L-rd had commanded Moses.

The army officers approached Moshe—the officers who were over divisions of the thousands and the officers of the thousands, and the officers of the hundreds.

And the officers who were over the thousands of the host, the captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds, came near to Moshe:

And there drew near to Moses those appointed over the thousands of the host, the officers of the thousands and the officers of the hundreds.

And they said to Moshe: “Your servants have taken a census of the soldiers who went out to war and not one of us is missing.

and they said to Moshe, Thy servants have taken the sum of the men of war who are under our charge, and not one man of us is missing.

And they said to Moses: Your servants have counted the men of war who were under our charge, and not one of us is missing.

We have therefore brought an offering for Adonoy. Any man who found a gold article—an anklet, or a bracelet, a ring, earring or clasp [has dedicated it for Adonoy] to atone for ourselves before Adonoy.”

We have therefore brought an offering for the Lord, what every man has gotten, of jewels of gold, chains, and bracelets, rings, earrings, and girdles, to make atonement for our souls before the Lord.

And we have presented the offering of the L-rd, each what he has found: golden vessels, foot bands, arm bands, rings, ear rings, and kumaz [pudendal ornaments (to atone for lustful thoughts towards the daughters of Midian)] to atone for our souls before the L-rd.

Moshe and Elozor the kohein took the gold from them, every fashioned article.

And Moshe and El῾azar the priest took the gold of them, all wrought jewels.

And Moses and Elazar the Cohein took the gold from them, all wrought articles.

All the gold of the offering that they set apart for Adonoy was 16,750 shekolim, from the officers who were over divisions of the thousands and from the officers who were over divisions of the hundreds.

And all the gold of the offering that they offered up to the Lord, of the captains of thousands, and of the captains of hundreds, was sixteen thousand seven hundred and fifty shekels.

And all the gold of the terumah that they devoted to the L-rd was sixteen thousand and seven hundred and fifty shekels, from the officers of the thousands and from the officer of the hundreds.

The men of war, took booty for themselves.

(For the men of war had taken spoil, every man for himself.)

Each of the men of the host had taken spoils for himself.

Moshe and Elozor the kohein took the gold from the officers who were over divisions of the thousands and the hundreds, and they brought it to the Tent of Meeting as a remembrance for Bnei Yisroel before Adonoy.

And Moshe and El῾azar the priest took the gold of the captains of thousands and of hundreds, and brought it to the Tent of Meeting, a memorial for the children of Yisra᾽el before the Lord.

And Moses and Elazar the Cohein took the gold from the officers of the thousands and the hundreds, and they brought it to the tent of meeting, a memorial for the children of Israel before the L-rd.
