Very large herds belonged to the children (tribes) of Reuvein and Gad—[an] extremely large [number]; and they saw the land of Ya’zeir and the land of Gilad, and behold, the region was an area for livestock.
Now the children of Re᾽uven and the children of Gad had a very great multitude of cattle: and when they saw the land of Ya῾zer, and the land of Gil῾ad, that, behold, the place was a place for cattle;
And the sons of Reuven and the sons of Gad had much cattle, a great multitude, and they saw the land of Yazer and the land of Gilead, and behold, it was a place of cattle.

The tribes of Reuvein and Gad came and spoke to Moshe and to Elozor the kohein, and to the princes of the community, saying:
the children of Gad and the children of Re᾽uven came and spoke to Moshe, and to El῾azar the priest, and to the princes of the congregation, saying,
And the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuven came, and they said to Moses and Elazar the Cohein and to the chiefs of the congregation:

the land that Adonoy struck down before Bnei Yisroel, is an area for livestock; and your servants have livestock.”
the country which the Lord smote before the congregation of Yisra᾽el, is a land for cattle, and thy servants have cattle:
The land which the L-rd smote before the congregation of Israel — it is a land of cattle, and your servants have cattle.

They said: “If we have found favor in your eyes, let this land be given to your servants as a possession. Do not bring us over the Yardein.”
and they said, If we have found favour in thy sight, let this land be given to thy servants for a possession, and bring us not over the Yarden.
And they said: If we have found favor in your eyes, let this land be given to your servants as a holding; do not have us cross the Jordan.

Moshe said to the children (tribes) of Gad and Reuvein: “Should your brothers go out to war while you settle here?
And Moshe said to the children of Gad and to the children of Re᾽uven, Shall your brethren go to war, and shall you sit here?
And Moses said to the sons of Gad and to the sons of Reuven: Would your brothers go to the war and you remain here!

Why do you dishearten Bnei Yisroel from crossing over to the land that Adonoy has given them?
And why do you dishearten the children of Yisra᾽el from going over into the land which the Lord has given them?
And why would you dishearten the children of Israel from crossing into the land which the L-rd has given to them, [giving them the impression that you are in awe of the strength of the Canaanites and fear warring with them]?

This is what your fathers did when I sent them from Kadeish Barnei’a to look at the land.
Thus did your fathers, when I sent them from Qadesh-barnea to see the land.
Thus did your fathers do when I sent them from Kadesh Barnea to see the land.

They went up to Nachal Eshkol and saw the land. They then disheartened Bnei Yisroel from coming into the land that Adonoy has given them.
For when they went up to the wadi of Eshkol, and saw the land, they disheartened the children of Yisra᾽el, that they should not go into the land which the Lord had given them.
And they went up until Nachal Eshkol and they saw the land, and they disheartened the children of Israel, that they not come to the land that the L-rd gave to them.

Adonoy displayed His anger on that day and He swore, saying:

And the L-rd was wroth on that day, and He swore, saying:

Surely none of the men that came up out of Miżrayim, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land which I swore to Avraham, to Yiżĥaq, and to Ya῾aqov; because they have not wholly followed me:
If the men who went up out of Egypt from twenty years and above shall see (i.e., I swear that they shall not see) the land which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, for they have not fulfilled (My behest by following) after Me.

Except Calev the son of Yefuneh, the Kenizi [(Calev was the stepson of Kenaz, to whom Calev's mother bore Othniel (see Joshua 15:17)] and Joshua the son of Nun, for they have fulfilled (the L-rd's behest by following) after the L-rd.

Adonoy displayed anger against Yisroel and He made them wander in the wilderness for forty years, until the end (death) of the entire generation that had done evil in the eyes of Adonoy.
And the Lord’s anger burned against Yisra᾽el, and he made them wander in the wilderness for forty years, until all the generation, that had done evil in the sight of the Lord, was consumed.
And the L-rd was wroth with Israel, and He made them wander in the desert forty years until the entire generation that did the evil in the eyes of the L-rd had been consumed.

Behold, you have now risen in the place of your fathers as a group of sinners, to add to the wrath of Adonoy against Yisroel.
And, behold, you are risen up in place of your fathers, a brood of sinful men, to augment yet the fierce anger of the Lord towards Yisra᾽el.
And, behold, you have arisen in your fathers' place, a growth of sinful men, to add even more to the wrath of the L-rd against Israel!

And they came near to him, and said, We will build sheepfolds here for our cattle, and cities for our little ones:
And they drew near to him and they said: We will build sheepfolds for our kine here and cities for our little ones [(placing their wealth before their children!)]

We will then arm ourselves rapidly, and will be ready to go before Bnei Yisroel until we have brought them to their place. Our children will dwell in fortified cities because of the inhabitants of the land.
but we ourselves will go ready armed before the children of Yisra᾽el, until we have brought them to their place: and our little ones shall dwell in the fortified cities because of the inhabitants of the land.
And we will arm ourselves speedily (to go) at the head [of the columns] of the children of Israel [(the men of Gad and Reuven being warriors (see Deuteronomy 33:20, 3:18, and Joshua 6:13)] until we have brought them to their place, and our little ones will abide in the fortified cities against the inhabitants of the land.

We shall not return to our houses until the children of Israel have inherited, each his inheritance.

For we will not inherit with them on yonder side of the Yarden, and farther off; because our inheritance is fallen to us on this side of the Yarden eastward.
For we will not inherit with them across the Jordan and beyond [on the western side], for our inheritance has come to us [i.e., we have already accepted it] across the Jordan eastwards.
