Adonoy spoke to Moshe in the plains of Moav by the Yardein near Yereicho, saying:

And the Lord spoke to Moshe in the plains of Mo᾽av by Yarden near Yereĥo saying,

And the L-rd spoke to Moses in the plains of Moav by the Jordan (near) Jericho, saying:

“Instruct Bnei Yisroel and have them give to the Levites from their hereditary possession, cities in which to settle; and open space for the cities all around you shall give to the Levites.

Command the children of Yisra᾽el, that they give to the Levites of the inheritance of their possession cities to dwell in; and you shall give also to the Levites an open space for the cities round about them.

Command the children of Israel that they give to the Levites from the inheritance of their holding, cities to dwell in; and an open space for the cities roundabout [(for beauty, not for building or sowing)] shall you give to the Levites.

These cities shall be theirs for dwelling, and their open space shall be for their animals, their property and all of their necessities to live.

And the cities shall they have to dwell in; and their open spaces shall be for their cattle, and for their goods, and for all their beasts.

And the cities shall be for them to dwell in. And their open spaces shall be for their beasts, for their possessions, and for all of their needs.

The open space for the cities that you shall give the Levites [shall extend] from the walls of the city and outward a thousand amo¯s all around.

And the open spaces of the cities, that you shall give to the Levites, shall reach from the wall of the city outwards a thousand cubits round about.

And the open spaces of the cities that you give to the Levites, from the wall of the city and outwards, one thousand cubits roundabout ["two thousand cubits" (5) are to be understood as two thousand cubits all around; the inner thousand for the open space, and the outer, for fields and vineyards.]

You shall measure from outside the city two thousand amo¯s on the eastern side, two thousand amo¯s on the southern side, two thousand amo¯s on the western side, and two thousand amo¯s on the northern side; with the city in the center. This shall be the open spaces for the cities.

And you shall measure from outside the city on the east side two thousand cubits, and on the south side two thousand cubits, and on the west side two thousand cubits, and on the north side two thousand cubits, and the city shall be in the midst: this shall be to them the open spaces of the cities.

And you shall measure from outside the city: on the east side, two thousand cubits, and on the south side, two thousand cubits, and on the west side, two thousand cubits, and on the north side, two thousand cubits; and the city shall be in the midst. This shall be for them the open spaces of the cities.

Along with the cities that you shall give the Levites shall be the six refuge cities which you shall provide [as places] for a murderer to flee; and in addition to them, you shall provide forty-two cities.

And among the cities which you shall give to the Levites shall be six cities of refuge, which you shall appoint for the manslayer, that he may flee there: and to them you shall add forty two cities.

And the cities which you shall give to the Levites: the six cities of refuge, which you shall give for the slayer to flee there; and, in addition to them, you shall give forty-two cities.

The total number of cities that you shall give to the Levites is forty eight cities, with their open spaces.

So all the cities which you shall give to the Levites shall be forty eight cities: both them and their open spaces.

All the cities which you shall give to the Levites: forty-eight cities, they and their open places.

The cities that you shall give, [shall be] from the possession of Bnei Yisroel; take more from a larger [holding], and less from a smaller [holding], each person, according to his inheritance, shall give of his cities to the Levites.”

And the cities which you shall give shall be of the possession of the children of Yisra᾽el: from them that have many you shall give many: and from them that have few you shall give few: every one shall give of the cities to the Levites according to his inheritance which he inherits.

And the cities that you give from the holding of the children of Israel: From the many, shall you give more, and from the few shall you give less. Each, according to his inheritance that they shall inherit shall give of his cities to the Levites.

Adonoy spoke to Moshe, saying:

And the Lord spoke to Moshe, saying,

And the L-rd spoke to Moses, saying:

“Speak to Bnei Yisroel and say to them: ‘When you cross the Yardein into the land of Canaan,

Speak to the children of Yisra᾽el, and say to them, When you come over the Yarden into the land of Kena῾an;

Speak to the children of Israel and say to them: When you cross the Jordan to the land of Canaan,

you shall provide cities for yourselves, which shall serve as refuge cities for you, so that a murderer can flee there, one who accidentally killed a person.

then you shall appoint you cities to be cities of refuge for you; that the slayer who kills any person unawares may flee thither.

You shall designate cities for yourselves. Cities of refuge shall there be for you. And there shall flee there a slayer who kills a soul unwittingly.

These cities shall serve you as a refuge from the avenger, so that the murderer will not die until he stands in judgment before the congregation.

And they shall be to you cities for refuge from the avenger; that the manslayer die not, until he stand before the congregation in judgment.

And the cities shall be for you as a refuge from the avenger [of the blood, who is kin to the slain man]; and the slayer shall not die until he stand before the congregation for judgment.

The cities that you shall give, will serve you as six refuge cities.

And the cities which you shall give shall be six cities for refuge.

And the cities which you shall provide — six cities of refuge shall there be for you. [(Even though Moses in his lifetime designated three cities across the Jordan as cities of refuge (Deuteronomy 4:41), they did not afford refuge until three had been designated by Joshua in the land of Canaan.)]

Three cities on this side of the Yardein, and the [other] three cities you shall give in the land of Canaan. They shall be cities of refuge.

You shall give three cities on this side of the Yarden, and three cities shall you give in the land of Kena῾an; cities of refuge shall they be.

The three cities shall you provide across the Jordan, and the three cities shall you provide in the land of Canaan [(Though there were nine tribes in the land of Canaan, and only two and a half across the Jordan, there were three cities of refuge for both, Gilead (across the Jordan) being "profuse" in slayers)]; cities of refuge shall they be.

For Bnei Yisroel, the proselyte, and resident among them, shall these six cities be a refuge, to flee there anyone who accidentally kills a person.

These six cities shall be a refuge, both for the children of Yisra᾽el, and for the stranger, and for the sojourner among them: that everyone that kills any person unawares may flee there.

For the children of Israel and for the sojourner and for the dweller in their midst shall these six cities be for refuge, to flee there all who kill a soul unwittingly.

But if he struck him with an iron instrument and he died, then he is a murderer; the murderer must be executed.

And if he smite him with an instrument of iron, so that he die, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death.

And if with an iron implement [of any size] he kill him [intentionally], and he die, he is a murderer — die shall die the murderer, [it being known to the L-rd that any amount of iron can kill. (Other implements must first be established as lethal before the slayer is put to death, viz. (17 and 18): "whereby he can die.")].

Or if with a stone that can be held in the hand and which can kill he strikes him, and he died, he is a murderer; the murderer must be executed.

And if he smite him by hand with a stone, whereby he may die, and he die, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death.

And if with a hand-stone [i.e., the size of a full hand], whereby he can die [see above], he strike him, and he die, he is a murderer — die shall die the murderer.

Or if with a wooden implement [that can be held] in the hand and which can cause death he strikes him, and he died, he is a murderer; the murderer must be executed.

Or if he smite him with a hand weapon of wood, whereby he may die, and he die, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death.

Or if with a wooden implement, whereby he can die, he strike him, and he die, he is a murderer — die shall die the murderer. [(This, to indicate that the "rod" of Exodus 21:20 must be of killing potential.)]

The blood avenger shall kill the murderer, wherever he meets him he may kill him.

The revenger of blood himself shall slay the murderer: when he meets him, he shall slay him.

The avenger, he shall kill the murderer; when he comes upon him, [even within the cities of refuge], he shall kill him.

If he pushes [his victim] out of hatred or throws at him deliberately, and he died,

And if he thrust him out of hatred, or hurl something at him whilst lying in wait, that he die;

And if in hatred he thrust him, or hurl aught at him in ambush, and he die,

or if in enmity, he struck him with his hand and he died, the assailant must be executed; he is a murderer. The blood avenger may kill the murderer wherever he meets him.

or in enmity smite him with his hand, that he die: he that smote him shall surely be put to death; for he is a murderer: the revenger of blood shall slay the murderer, when he encounters him.

Or if in hatred he strike him with his hand, and he die, then die shall die the smiter; he is a murderer. The avenger shall kill the murderer when he comes upon him.

But if suddenly, without enmity, he pushed him or threw any object at him not deliberately,

But if he thrust him suddenly without enmity, or cast upon him anything without lying in wait,

And if by accident, without hatred, he thrust him, or he cast upon him some implement, without ambush,

Or (even) with a stone which can kill, without seeing [the victim], he threw it down on him and he died, but he was not his enemy and did not seek his harm.

or with any stone, whereby a man may die, but without seeing him, and cast it upon him, that he die, and was not his enemy, nor sought his harm:

Or with any stone, whereby one can die he strike him, without seeing [him], and he cast it upon him [with a downward (but not with an upward) movement], and he die, and he not be his foe and not intend his evil,

Then the congregation shall judge between the assailant and the blood avenger, abiding by these laws.

then the congregation shall judge between the slayer and the revenger of blood according to these judgments:

Then the congregation shall judge between the slayer and the avenger according to these judgments,

The congregation shall protect the murderer from the blood avenger, and return him to his refuge city where he had fled, and he must remain there until the death of the Kohein Gadol who was anointed with the sacred oil.

and the congregation shall deliver the slayer out of the hand of the revenger of blood, and the congregation shall restore him to the city of his refuge, whither he was fled: and he shall abide in it until the death of the high priest, who was anointed with the holy oil.

And the congregation shall rescue the slayer from the hand of the avenger, and the congregation shall return him to the city of his refuge to which he had fled, and he shall dwell there until the death of the high-priest who had been anointed with the holy oil, [it not being fitting that he, the slayer, whose act leads to the departure of the Shechinah from Israel and the shortening of their lives abide before the high-priest, whose end is the reposing of the Shechinah upon Israel and the lengthening of their lives)].

But if the murderer goes outside of the border of his refuge city where he had fled,

But if the slayer shall at any time come outside the border of the city of his refuge, whither he was fled;

And if the murderer go beyond the border of the city of his refuge whither he has fled,

and the blood avenger finds him outside the border of his refuge city, and the blood avenger kills the murderer, he has no blood.

and the revenger of blood find him outside the borders of the city of his refuge, and the revenger of blood kill the slayer; he shall not be guilty of blood:

And the avenger find him outside the border of the city of his refuge, then the avenger may slay the murderer; he has no blood [i.e., he is like one who kills a dead man, who has no blood.]

For he (the killer) must remain in his refuge city until the death of the Kohein Gadol. After the death of the Kohein Gadol the murderer may return to the land of his possession.

because he should have remained in the city of his refuge until the death of the high priest: but after the death of the high priest the slayer shall return to the land of his possession.

For in the city of his refuge shall he dwell until the death of the high-priest; and after the death of the high-priest, the slayer shall return to the land of his holding.

These [rules] shall be for you the law of justice for all your descendants in all your dwelling places.

So these things shall be for a statute of judgment to you throughout your generations in all your dwellings.

And these shall be for you a statute of judgment throughout your generations in all of your dwellings [A small sanhedrin obtains outside of Eretz Yisrael so long as one obtains in Eretz Yisrael.]

If anyone kills a person, only upon the testimony of witnesses shall the murderer be killed. But one witness may not testify against a person, in a case of capital punishment.

Whoever kills any person, the murderer shall be put to death by the mouth of witnesses: but one witness shall not testify against any person to cause him to die.

Whoever would kill a soul [because he killed another], by the testimony of witnesses [that he killed wittingly and after having been forewarned] shall he kill the slayer; and one witness shall not testify against a soul to have him put to death.

And do not accept atonement compensation for the life of a murderer who is wicked to incur the death penalty, for he must be executed.

Moreover you shall take no ransom for the life of a murderer, who is guilty of death: but he shall be surely put to death.

And you shall not take ransom for the soul of a murderer who is liable to death, but die shall he die.

And do not accept atonement compensation for one who has fled to his refuge city, to allow him to return to live in the land, before the death of the Kohein (Gadol).

And you shall take no ransom for him that is fled to the city of his refuge, that he should come back to dwell in the land, until the death of the priest.

And you shall not take ransom for him [who killed unwittingly and] who fled to the city of his refuge, to return to dwell in the land before the death of the (high-) priest.

Do not pollute the land in which you live, for, the blood pollutes the land, and for the land there can be no atonement for the blood that was spilled in it, except through the blood of the one who spilled it.

So you shall not pollute the land in which you are: for blood pollutes the land: and the land cannot be cleansed of the blood that is shed therein, but by the blood of him that shed it.

And you shall not convict the land in which you are. For the blood convicts the land, and the land will not have atonement for the blood that was spilled in it except by the blood of its spiller.

You must not defile the land in which you live, wherein I reside, for, I, Adonoy, dwell among Bnei Yisroel.’”

And thou shalt not defile the land which you shall inhabit, in which I dwell: for I the Lord dwell among the children of Yisra᾽el.

And you shall not defile the land which you inhabit, in which I dwell [(so that you not cause Me to dwell in its uncleanliness)], for I, the L-rd, dwell in the midst of the children of Israel [even when they are unclean].
