The Koren Jerusalem Bible

And the Lord spoke to Moshe, saying,

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And the L-rd spoke to Moses, saying:

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

Command Bnei Yisroel that they must expel from the camp. anyone with tzora’as, and anyone from whom flows a [seminal] discharge and anyone who became defiled by a (departed) soul.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

Command the children of Yisra᾽el, that they put out of the camp everyone with żara῾at, and everyone that has an issue, and whoever is defiled by the dead:

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

Command the children of Israel [(This section was stated on the day that the mishkan was erected)] that they send out of the camp [(There were three camps: the camp of the Shechinah — within the curtains (of the mishkan); the camp of the Levites — the encampment of the Levites roundabout (the mishkan); the camp of Israel — from the camp of the Levites until the end of the encampment of the standards on all four sides)] every leper, [to be sent out of all three camps)], every zav [to be sent out of the first two camps (see Leviticus 15:2)] and everyone who has become unclean by a dead body [to be sent out only from the first camp].

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

Whether male or female you shall send them out. Beyond the camp you shall send them, and they shall not defile their camps in which I dwell among them.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

both male and female shall you put out, outside the camp shall you put them; that they defile not their camps, in the midst of which I dwell.

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

From male until female shall you send them out. Outside of the camp shall you send them; and they shall not make unclean their camps in whose midst I dwell.

וַיַּֽעֲשׂוּ־כֵן֙ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וַיְשַׁלְּח֣וּ אוֹתָ֔ם אֶל־מִח֖וּץ לַֽמַּחֲנֶ֑ה כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר דִּבֶּ֤ר יְהֹוָה֙ אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֔ה כֵּ֥ן עָשׂ֖וּ בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃{פ}

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

Bnei Yisroel did so, and they sent them beyond the camp; just as Adonoy spoke to Moshe, so did Bnei Yisroel do.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

And the children of Yisra᾽el did so, and put them out outside the camp: as the Lord spoke to Moshe, so did the children of Yisra᾽el.

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And the children of Israel did so, and they sent them outside the camp. As the L-rd spoke to Moses, so did the children of Israel do.

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

Adonoy spoke to Moshe, saying;

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

And the Lord spoke to Moshe, saying,

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And the L-rd spoke to Moses, saying:

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

Speak to Bnei Yisroel: When a man or a woman commits any of the sins against man, acting treacherously against Adonoy, and that person is guilty.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

Speak to the children of Yisra᾽el, When a man or woman shall commit any sin that men commit, to do a trespass against the Lord, and that person be guilty;

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

Speak to the children of Israel: A man or a woman, if they do of all the sins of man to commit a profanation against the L-rd [and swear falsely in denial of a claim], and that soul be guilty, [(Although this has already been stated (Leviticus 5:21), it is repeated here for two new teachings: First (7) that one is not liable for the fifth and the guilt-offering by the testimony of witnesses, but only by his own confession; second (8) that the stolen property of a proselyte (without heirs) is given to the Cohanim)],

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

They shall confess the sins which they committed and return the principal amount [of the object] of his guilt, and add one fifth to that amount. He shall then give it to whom he is indebted.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

then they shall confess their sin which they have done: and he shall make restitution for his trespass in full, and add to it its fifth part, and give it to him against whom he has trespassed.

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And they confess their sins which they have done, then he shall make restitution for his guilt by (restoration of) its (the theft's) principal, and its fifth shall he add to it, and he shall give it to the one to whom he is liable [for payment].

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

But if the man has no redeemer (relative) to whom the debt may be returned, the debt being returned then belongs to Adonoy, [then] to the kohein. This is besides the ram of forgiveness with which he [his sin] will be atoned.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

But if the man have no kinsman to whom restitution may be made for the trespass, let the trespass which is recompensed to the Lord, be the priest’s; beside the ram of the atonement, whereby atonement shall be made for him.

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And if the man does not have a redeemer to whom to return the debt, [the claimant, a proselyte, having died and left no heirs], the debt [the principal], which is returned [i.e., "and the fifth"] is the L-rd's [i.e., He has acquired it, and He has given it] to the Cohein [of the officiating watch], aside from the ram of atonement whereby atonement shall be made for him.

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

Every terumah-gift of all the sacred things of Bnei Yisroel that they will bring to the kohein, shall be his.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

And every offering of all the holy things of the children of Yisra᾽el, which they bring to the priest, shall be his.

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And every terumah of all the holy things of the children of Israel which they present to the Cohein [i.e., bikkurim (first-fruits)], to him shall it be.

וְאִ֥ישׁ אֶת־קֳדָשָׁ֖יו ל֣וֹ יִהְי֑וּ אִ֛ישׁ אֲשֶׁר־יִתֵּ֥ן לַכֹּהֵ֖ן ל֥וֹ יִהְיֶֽה׃{פ}

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

A man’s sacred objects shall be his; whatever a man gives to the kohein, shall be his.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

And every man’s hallowed things shall be his: whatever any man gives the priest, it shall be his.

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And every man, his holy things, to him shall they be [i.e., he has the privilege of giving them to whichever Cohein he wishes.] Whatever [designated gifts] a man gives to the Cohein, to him shall it be [i.e., it shall redound to the giver's wealth.]

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

Adonoy spoke to Moshe, saying;

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

And the Lord spoke to Moshe, saying,

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And the L-rd spoke to Moses, saying:

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

Speak to Bnei Yisroel and say to them: If any man’s wife goes astray and acts treacherously toward him.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

Speak to the children of Yisra᾽el, and say to them, If any man’s wife go aside, and commit a trespass against him,

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

Speak to the children of Israel and say to them: A man, if his wife go astray, and she be faithless to him,

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

And a man has lain with her conjugally but it was hidden from her husband’s eyes and she was concealed and has become defiled and there is no witness against her, and she was not seized forcibly.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

and a man lie with her carnally, and it be hid from the eyes of her husband, and she be undetected, and she be defiled, and there is no witness against her, nor is she taken in the act;

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And [(the faithlessness being that)] a man [(excluding a minor or an animal)] lie with her a lying of seed, and it be hid [(but if he saw and made himself "unseeing," the waters do not probe her)] from the eyes [(excluding a blind man)] of her husband, and she had secreted herself [with him long enough for intercourse], and she be defiled, and there be no witness to it [to the act of intercourse (for if there were even one witness to the act, the draught is not administered to her), but there be witnesses to her having secreted herself with him], and she had not been seized [i.e., forced],

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

[When] a spirit of jealousy comes upon him and he is jealous of his wife and she was defiled or, a spirit of jealousy comes upon him and he is jealous of his wife and she was not defiled,

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

and the spirit of jealousy come upon him, and he be jealous of his wife, and she be defiled: or if the spirit of jealousy come upon him, and he be jealous of his wife, and she be not defiled:

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And [before she had secreted herself] there had passed over him a spirit of rancor and he had warned his wife [not to secrete herself with that man], and she were defiled [i.e., she might have been defiled] — Or, there had passed over him a spirit of rancor and he had warned his wife [and she had transgressed his warning (and secreted herself)] and she were not defiled [i.e., it is not known whether she were or were not defiled],

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

that man shall bring his wife to the kohein and he shall bring her offering for her; [which is] one tenth of an epha of barley flour; he shall not pour oil over it and he shall not put frankincense on it, for it is a meal-offering of jealousy, a meal-offering of remembrance, recalling an iniquity.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

then shall the man bring his wife to the priest, and he shall bring her offering for her, the tenth part of an efa of barley meal; he shall pour no oil upon it, nor put frankincense on it; for it is an offering of jealousy, an offering of memorial, bringing iniquity to remembrance.

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

Then the man shall bring his wife to the Cohein, and he shall bring her offering for her, the tenth of an ephah of meal [(not fine flour)] of barley [(not wheat, the offering for a "beastly" act being the food of a beast)]. He shall not pour oil upon it, [so that her offering not be beautified], and he shall not place frankincense upon it, for it is a meal-offering of rancors [the L-rd's and her husband's], a meal-offering of memorial, a reminder of sin.

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

The kohein shall bring her near and station her before Adonoy.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

And the priest shall bring her near, and set her before the Lord:

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And the Cohein shall draw her near and stand her before the L-rd [at the gate of Nikanor, the eastern gate, where all entered.]

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

The kohein shall take sanctified waters in a clay utensil, and of the earth that will be on the floor of the Mishkon, the kohein shall take and put into the water.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

and the priest shall take holy water in an earthen vessel; and of the dust that is on the floor of the tabernacle shall the priest take, and put it into the water:

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And the Cohein shall take water consecrated [in the laver] in an earthen vessel. And of the dust that is on the floor of the mishkan shall the Cohein take and place it in the water.

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

The kohein shall station the woman before Adonoy, and expose the woman’s hair, and place on her palms the meal-offering of remembrance; it is a meal-offering of jealousy and there will be in the kohein’s hand, the bitter, lethal waters.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

and the priest shall set the woman before the Lord, and loosen the hair of the woman’s head, and put the offering of memorial in her hands, which is the meal offering of jealousy: and the priest shall have in his hand the bitter water that causes the curse:

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And the Cohein shall stand the woman before the L-rd [again (see 16). (They would walk her from place to place to "weary" her into confession)]; and he shall dishevel the hair of the woman [in order to shame her], and he shall place in her hands the meal-offering of memorial, [to "weary" her into confession so that the Tetragrammaton not be erased in the waters] — it is a meal-offering of rancors — and in the hand of the Cohein will be the bitter [(causing her a "bitter" end)] blighting waters [("blighting" her from the world)].

The kohein shall place her under oath and say to the woman: If a man has not lain with you [conjugally] and if you have not gone astray to be defiled while you were married to your husband, you shall be absolved of these bitter, lethal waters.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

and the priest shall charge her by an oath, and say to the woman, If no man have lain with thee, and if thou hast not gone aside to uncleanness with another instead of thy husband, be thou free from this bitter water that causes the curse:

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And the Cohein shall beswear her and he shall say to the woman: If no man has lain with you, and you have not strayed uncleanly from your husband, then be clean (hinaki) of these bitter, blighting waters.

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

[But] you, if you have gone astray while you were married to your husband, and if you have been defiled, and if a man has lain conjugally with you, [a man] other than your husband.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

but if thou hast gone aside to another instead of thy husband, and if thou be defiled, and some man have lain with thee other than thy husband:

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And you, if you have gone astray from your husband, and if you have become unclean, and a man has put his lying in you aside from your husband, [then chinaki ("be strangled")].

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

The kohein shall place the woman under oath with the oath of accursedness, and the kohein shall say to the woman: “Adonoy shall make you a curse and an oath among your people, when Adonoy causes your thigh to collapse and your abdomen to swell.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

then the priest shall charge the woman with an oath of cursing, and the priest shall say to the woman, The Lord make thee a curse and an oath among thy people, when the Lord makes thy thigh to fall away, and thy belly to swell;

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

Then the Cohein shall beswear the woman with the oath of the curse, and the Cohein shall say to the woman: May the L-rd render you a curse [(that all curse by you, viz.: "May it happen to you as happened to that woman, etc.")] and an oath [(that all swear by you, viz.: "If I have not spoken truly may it happen to me, etc.")] in the midst of your people by the L-rd's causing your thigh to fall and your belly to swell [("thigh" precedes "belly" in the curse as it did in the act)].

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

This bitter, lethal water will enter your abdomen to swell the abdomen, and collapse the thigh and the woman shall say “Amein, Amein”.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

and this water that causes the curse shall go into thy bowels, to make thy belly to swell, and thy thigh to fall away: And the woman shall say, Amen, amen.

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And these blighting waters shall enter your innards to swell the belly and to make fall the thigh [of the adulterer (as well)], and the woman shall say: Amen, Amen [(Amen to the curse, Amen to the oath; Amen, in respect to this man, Amen in respect to any other man; Amen, that I did not go astray while betrothed, married, awaiting levirate marriage, or having been taken in levirate marriage.)]

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

The kohein shall write all these curses, on the scroll and dissolve them (the writing) in the bitter waters.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

And the priest shall write these curses in a book, and he shall blot them out with the bitter water:

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

Then the Cohein shall write these curses into a scroll and erase into the bitter waters.

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

and he shall cause the woman to drink the bitter water that causes the curse: and the water that causes the curse shall enter into her, and become bitter.

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And when he makes the woman drink the bitter, blighting waters, then the blighting waters shall enter into [all of] her, [(and not only into "thigh and belly," those being singled out because they "initiated" the transgression)] for bitterness [i.e., to be sore and bitter to her].

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

The kohein shall take from the woman’s hand the meal-offering of jealousy and he shall wave the meal-offering before Adonoy, and bring it close to the Altar.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

Then the priest shall take the meal offering of jealousy out of the woman’s hand, and shall wave the offering before the Lord, and offer it upon the altar:

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And the Cohein shall take from the hand of the woman the meal-offering of rancors, and he shall wave the meal-offering before the L-rd [back and forth and up and down. And she waves it with him, her hand above that of the Cohein], and he shall present it at the [south-west corner of the] altar [before taking the fistful, as with the other meal-offerings].

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And the Cohein shall take a fistful from the meal-offering as its "remembrance" [see Leviticus 2:2], and he shall smoke it on the altar, and then he shall make the woman drink the water.

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

He shall make her drink the water, and it shall be that if she had been defiled and had deceived her husband, the lethal waters shall enter her to become bitter, and her abdomen will swell and her thigh will collapse, and the woman will be a curse among her people.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

And when he has made her drink the water, then it shall come to pass, that, if she be defiled, and have done trespass against her husband, that the water that causes the curse shall enter into her, and become bitter, and her belly shall swell, and her thigh shall fall away: and the woman shall be a curse among her people.

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And he shall make her drink the water [(to include an instance where she refused to drink after the scroll was blotted out; in which instance she is forcibly made to drink it — unless she admitted having been adulterous.)] And it shall be, if she had been defiled and had been faithless to her husband, then the blighting waters will enter her for bitterness, and her belly will swell and her thigh will fall. [Though in the curses (21) "thigh" precedes "belly," in operation, the waters first enter the belly and then the thigh.] And the woman will be a curse in the midst of her people.

Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

But if the woman was not defiled and [she] is pure, she will be cleansed and shall bear seed.

The Koren Jerusalem Bible

And if the woman be not defiled, but be clean; then she shall be free, and shall conceive seed.

The Rashi chumash by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

And if the woman had not been defiled [in this concealment] and she be clean [of any other act], then she shall be absolved [of the blighting waters] and [what is more,] she will sow seed. [If she had difficult labors, she will have easy ones; if she had borne swarthy children, she will bear fair ones.]
