בָּרְכִ֥י נַפְשִׁ֗י אֶת־יְ֫הֹוָ֥ה יְהֹוָ֣ה אֱ֭לֹהַי גָּדַ֣לְתָּ מְּאֹ֑ד ה֖וֹד וְהָדָ֣ר לָבָֽשְׁתָּ׃
Bless the Lord, O my soul. O Lord my God Thou art very great, Thou art clothed with glory and majesty.
Bless the L rd, O my soul. O L rd, my G d, You are greatly exalted. You have clothed Yourself with glory and beauty.
עֹֽטֶה־א֭וֹר כַּשַּׂלְמָ֑ה נוֹטֶ֥ה שָׁ֝מַ֗יִם כַּיְרִיעָֽה׃
Who covers himself with light as with a garment: who stretches out the heavens like a curtain:
He cloaks [the firmament] with light as with a garment. He stretches forth the heavens as a sheet.
הַ֥מְקָרֶ֥ה בַמַּ֗יִם עֲֽלִיּ֫וֹתָ֥יו הַשָּׂם־עָבִ֥ים רְכוּב֑וֹ הַֽ֝מְהַלֵּ֗ךְ עַל־כַּנְפֵי־רֽוּחַ׃
who lays the beams of his chambers in the waters: who makes the clouds his chariot: who walks upon the wings of the wind:
He roofs His upper chambers with water. He makes clouds His chariot. He walks [the clouds] on the wings of the wind.
עֹשֶׂ֣ה מַלְאָכָ֣יו רוּח֑וֹת מְ֝שָׁרְתָ֗יו אֵ֣שׁ לֹהֵֽט׃
who makes the winds his messengers; the flames of fire his ministers:
He makes winds His messengers; a burning fire, His ministers.
יָֽסַד־אֶ֭רֶץ עַל־מְכוֹנֶ֑יהָ בַּל־תִּ֝מּ֗וֹט עוֹלָ֥ם וָעֶֽד׃
who laid the foundations of the earth, that it should not be removed forever.
He established the earth on its foundations that it not incline [to fall] forever.
תְּ֭הוֹם כַּלְּב֣וּשׁ כִּסִּית֑וֹ עַל־הָ֝רִ֗ים יַ֖עַמְדוּ־מָֽיִם׃
Thou didst cover it with the deep as with a garment: the waters stood above the mountains.
He covered the depths [i.e., the sea] as with a garment; on the mountains stand the waters [(Oceanus, viz. Amos 5:8)].
מִן־גַּעֲרָ֣תְךָ֣ יְנוּס֑וּן מִן־ק֥וֹל רַ֝עַמְךָ֗ יֵחָפֵזֽוּן׃
At Thy rebuke they fled; at the voice of Thy thunder they hastened away;
At Your rebuke [viz. Genesis 1:9], they [the waters] fled; at the sound of Your thundering, they quickened [(to their basin)].
יַעֲל֣וּ הָ֭רִים יֵרְד֣וּ בְקָע֑וֹת אֶל־מְ֝ק֗וֹם זֶ֤ה**׀** יָסַ֬דְתָּ לָהֶֽם׃
they went up the mountains; they flowed down the valleys to the place which Thou didst found for them.
They ascended mountains; they descended [into] the valleys, to this place that You founded for them.
גְּֽבוּל־שַׂ֭מְתָּ בַּל־יַעֲבֹר֑וּן בַּל־יְ֝שֻׁב֗וּן לְכַסּ֥וֹת הָאָֽרֶץ׃
Thou didst set a bound that they might not pass over; that they might not turn back to cover the earth.
You set [for them] a bound [i.e., the shore] that they could not pass, [whereby] they could not return to cover the land.
הַֽמְשַׁלֵּ֣חַ מַ֭עְיָנִים בַּנְּחָלִ֑ים בֵּ֥ין הָ֝רִ֗ים יְהַלֵּכֽוּן׃
He sends the springs into the valleys; they flow between the hills:
He sends forth springs among the streams, that course between the mountains.
יַ֭שְׁקוּ כׇּל־חַיְת֣וֹ שָׂדָ֑י יִשְׁבְּר֖וּ פְרָאִ֣ים צְמָאָֽם׃
they give drink to every wild beast: the wild asses quench their thirst.
They water all the living things of the field; the creatures slake their thirst [by them].
עֲ֭לֵיהֶם עוֹף־הַשָּׁמַ֣יִם יִשְׁכּ֑וֹן מִבֵּ֥ין עֳ֝פָאיִ֗ם יִתְּנוּ־קֽוֹל׃
Beside them dwell the birds of the sky; from among the branches they sing.
Above them [(the springs)] dwell the birds of heaven, lifting their voices between the leaves.
מַשְׁקֶ֣ה הָ֭רִים מֵעֲלִיּוֹתָ֑יו מִפְּרִ֥י מַ֝עֲשֶׂ֗יךָ תִּשְׂבַּ֥ע הָאָֽרֶץ׃
He waters the hills from his upper chambers: the earth is satisfied with the fruit of Thy works.
He waters mountains from His heights [(the clouds)]. From the fruit of Your works [i.e., the rain] the earth is sated.
מַצְמִ֤יחַ חָצִ֨יר**׀** לַבְּהֵמָ֗ה וְ֭עֵשֶׂב לַעֲבֹדַ֣ת הָאָדָ֑ם לְה֥וֹצִיא לֶ֝֗חֶם מִן־הָאָֽרֶץ׃
He causes the grass to grow for the cattle, and plants for the service of man: that he may bring forth food out of the earth;
He makes sprout grass for the beast and herb for the work of man, to bring forth bread from the earth.
וְיַ֤יִן**׀** יְשַׂמַּ֬ח לְֽבַב־אֱנ֗וֹשׁ לְהַצְהִ֣יל פָּנִ֣ים מִשָּׁ֑מֶן וְ֝לֶ֗חֶם לְֽבַב־אֱנ֥וֹשׁ יִסְעָֽד׃
and wine that makes glad the heart of man; oil to brighten his face; and bread which sustains the heart of man.
And wine which rejoices the heart of man, [the wherewithal] to brighten his face with oil, and bread to stay the heart of man.
יִ֭שְׂבְּעוּ עֲצֵ֣י יְהֹוָ֑ה אַֽרְזֵ֥י לְ֝בָנ֗וֹן אֲשֶׁ֣ר נָטָֽע׃
The trees of the Lord have their fill; the cedars of Levanon, which he has planted;
The trees of the L rd [in Eden] are sated, the cedars of Lebanon which He planted,
אֲשֶׁר־שָׁ֭ם צִפֳּרִ֣ים יְקַנֵּ֑נוּ חֲ֝סִידָ֗ה בְּרוֹשִׁ֥ים בֵּיתָֽהּ׃
where the birds make their nests: as for the stork, the cypress trees are her house.
Where the birds nest, the stork [making] firs its home,
הָרִ֣ים הַ֭גְּבֹהִים לַיְּעֵלִ֑ים סְ֝לָעִ֗ים מַחְסֶ֥ה לַֽשְׁפַנִּֽים׃
The high hills are a refuge for the wild goats; and the rocks for the badgers.
The high mountains for the wild goats; the rocks, a shelter for the conies.
עָשָׂ֣ה יָ֭רֵחַ לְמוֹעֲדִ֑ים שֶׁ֝֗מֶשׁ יָדַ֥ע מְבוֹאֽוֹ׃
He appointed the moon for seasons: the sun knows his going down.
He made the moon for [(the reckoning of)] festivals; the sun knows its setting [(as opposed to the moon, whose setting is sometimes long, sometimes short)].
תָּֽשֶׁת־חֹ֭שֶׁךְ וִ֣יהִי לָ֑יְלָה בּוֹ־תִ֝רְמֹ֗שׂ כׇּל־חַיְתוֹ־יָֽעַר׃
Thou makest darkness, and it is night; when all the beasts of the forest do creep forth.
You made darkness and it [i.e., its domain] was night, wherein stir all the creatures of the forest.
הַ֭כְּפִירִים שֹׁאֲגִ֣ים לַטָּ֑רֶף וּלְבַקֵּ֖שׁ מֵאֵ֣ל אׇכְלָֽם׃
The young lions roar after their prey, and seek their food from God.
The young lions roar for the prey, and seek their food from G d.
תִּזְרַ֣ח הַ֭שֶּׁמֶשׁ יֵאָסֵפ֑וּן וְאֶל־מְ֝עוֹנֹתָ֗ם יִרְבָּצֽוּן׃
The sun rises, they slink away, and lay them down in their dens.
When the sun rises, they betake themselves, and in their dens they lie.
יֵצֵ֣א אָדָ֣ם לְפׇעֳל֑וֹ וְֽלַעֲבֹ֖דָת֣וֹ עֲדֵי־עָֽרֶב׃
Man goes forth to his work and to his labour until the evening.
A man [then] goes out to his work and to his labor until evening.
מָה־רַבּ֬וּ מַעֲשֶׂ֨יךָ**׀** יְֽהֹוָ֗ה כֻּ֭לָּם בְּחׇכְמָ֣ה עָשִׂ֑יתָ מָלְאָ֥ה הָ֝אָ֗רֶץ קִנְיָנֶֽךָ׃
O Lord, how manifold are Thy works! in wisdom hast Thou made them all: the earth is full of Thy creatures.
How vast are Your works, O L rd. You have wrought all in wisdom; the earth is full of Your acquisitions.
זֶ֤ה**׀** הַיָּ֥ם גָּדוֹל֮ וּרְחַ֢ב יָ֫דָ֥יִם שָֽׁם־רֶ֭מֶשׂ וְאֵ֣ין מִסְפָּ֑ר חַיּ֥וֹת קְ֝טַנּ֗וֹת עִם־גְּדֹלֽוֹת׃
So is this great and wide sea, wherein are creeping things innumerable, both small and great beasts.
This great, broad sea, endued with infinite stirrings, small creatures and great,
שָׁ֭ם אֳנִיּ֣וֹת יְהַלֵּכ֑וּן לִ֝וְיָתָ֗ן זֶֽה־יָצַ֥רְתָּ לְשַֽׂחֶק־בּֽוֹ׃
There go the ships: there are the dolphins, whom Thou hast made to play therein.
Whereon course the ships; this leviathan, which You formed to disport with.
כֻּ֭לָּם אֵלֶ֣יךָ יְשַׂבֵּר֑וּן לָתֵ֖ת אׇכְלָ֣ם בְּעִתּֽוֹ׃
These wait all upon Thee; that Thou mayst give them their food in due season.
They all aspire to You, to give [them] their food in its time.
תִּתֵּ֣ן לָ֭הֶם יִלְקֹט֑וּן תִּפְתַּ֥ח יָ֝דְךָ֗ יִשְׂבְּע֥וּן טֽוֹב׃
Thou givest it to them; they gather it: Thou openest Thy hand, they are filled with good.
You give it to them and they gather it; You open wide Your hand and they are sated with good.
תַּסְתִּ֥יר פָּנֶיךָ֮ יִֽבָּהֵ֫ל֥וּן תֹּסֵ֣ף ר֭וּחָם יִגְוָע֑וּן וְֽאֶל־עֲפָרָ֥ם יְשׁוּבֽוּן׃
Thou hidest Thy face, they are troubled: Thou takest away their breath, they die, and return to their dust.
When You hide Your face, they are confounded. You stifle their spirit and they expire, and they return to their dust.
תְּשַׁלַּ֣ח ר֭וּחֲךָ יִבָּרֵא֑וּן וּ֝תְחַדֵּ֗שׁ פְּנֵ֣י אֲדָמָֽה׃
Thou sendest forth Thy breath, they are created: and Thou renewest the face of the earth.
When You send Your spirit [(for the resurrection)], they will be [re-] created, and the face of the earth will be renewed.
יְהִ֤י כְב֣וֹד יְהֹוָ֣ה לְעוֹלָ֑ם יִשְׂמַ֖ח יְהֹוָ֣ה בְּמַעֲשָֽׂיו׃
May the glory of the Lord endure forever: let the Lord rejoice in his works.
The glory of the L rd shall endure forever; the L rd shall rejoice in His handiwork.
הַמַּבִּ֣יט לָ֭אָרֶץ וַתִּרְעָ֑ד יִגַּ֖ע בֶּהָרִ֣ים וְֽיֶעֱשָֽׁנוּ׃
He looks on the earth, and it trembles: he touches the hills, and they smoke.
He looks to the earth and it trembles; He touches the mountains and they smoke.
אָשִׁ֣ירָה לַיהֹוָ֣ה בְּחַיָּ֑י אֲזַמְּרָ֖ה לֵאלֹהַ֣י בְּעוֹדִֽי׃
I will sing to the Lord as long as I live: I will sing praise to my God while I have my being.
I shall sing to the L rd in my life; I shall sing to the L rd while I live.
יֶעֱרַ֣ב עָלָ֣יו שִׂיחִ֑י אָ֝נֹכִ֗י אֶשְׂמַ֥ח בַּיהֹוָֽה׃
My meditation of him shall be sweet: I will rejoice in the Lord.
My plaint shall be sweet to Him; I shall rejoice in the L rd.
יִתַּ֤מּוּ חַטָּאִ֨ים**׀** מִן־הָאָ֡רֶץ וּרְשָׁעִ֤ים**׀** ע֤וֹד אֵינָ֗ם בָּרְכִ֣י נַ֭פְשִׁי אֶת־יְהֹוָ֗ה הַֽלְלוּ־יָֽהּ׃{פ}
The sinners will be consumed out of the earth, and the wicked will be no more. Bless thou the Lord, O my soul. Haleluya!
Sinners will vanish from the earth and the wicked will be no more. Bless the L rd, O my soul, Hallelukah!
